This English set contains a mix of cards that were released in Japanese decks and a part of the HeartGold and SoulSilver Collections. This set is centered around the Legendary ‘dogs’: Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. All three are also available as Pokémon LEGEND cards, using two separated cards for one single artwork with two of these legendary Pokémon. The set contains 95 cards, but with reverse holos; secret rares; alternated holofoil variations; and promotional releases, a Full Master Set would consist of 203 cards.

Let’s start with the three obvious ones:

All three look amazing, and also lifelike. Especially the fur of the Raikou of Raikou & Suicune.

Some other artworks I like are these three water Pokémon:

Then two artworks that are kinda creepy:

I’m not really a fan of the Primes personally (the cards are great, but the artworks meh). It’s too zoomed in and therefore lacking beauty and detail of the entire Pokémons. The Tyranitar however with the sparkle in his eye and the pose is pretty good:

My least favorite card is probably Sudowoodo (or the other Primes):

It’s not that bad, and I like the combination of clay with the multiple layers of 2D background. But as a Sudowoodo fan I prefer a more ‘natural’ artwork for it.

What I also really like about this set, is that the evolutions all got the same theme. Like the Zubat and Golbat mentioned above. To give some more examples:

This is easily the weakest of the HGSS sets for me. I was never really a fan of the Dogs but I can respect the artwork on these particular ones. This set is just massively overshadowed by HGSS Base, which had Lugia and Ho-Oh and Typhlosion and Meganium and Feraligatr and so much more. Then after this was Undaunted with the Hoenn Legendary Pokemon (which is easily the strongest generation for Legendary Pokemon for me, Rayquaza and Deoxys alone take the cake) as well as Umbreon and Espeon. Triumphant was really good for playability and had some decent cards and then Call of Legends had the top-notch SL cards.

I don’t know if it’s just because it was sandwiched between two of my favorite sets ever but nothing really stands out from Unleashed. The Pokemon they picked for the Primes were really weird. Has anyone ever said that Lanturn or Ursaring was their favorite Pokemon?

At the time I was severely underwhelmed by this set for being a mishmash of leftovers collected to bridge the gap between the Japanese HGSS and Reviving Legends sets, and it’s still the weakest of the four HGSS sets. But now? Well, the HGSS sets in general are something I’m really missing with the current state of the TCG in Gen 7. Chase cards with tolerable pull rates, a nice variety of Pokemon, artwork that included a bunch of concepts and locations from the video games… 2010 was a really nice year for the TCG.

This set’s zubat is the best zubat.

I agree with you @quuador Tyranitar is also one of my favorite Primes  The Legendary dogs are all very cool too.

I do have some memories with this set, I got my best TCG tournament result when this set was new and I gained one booster pack of it. I pulled a holo Sudowoodo, I don’t like the card that much but I still have it as a memory. Got the Poliwag tournament promo too.

Here are some of my favorites from this set, I love the way how many of the water and fire type Pokemon have this cool theme going on with flames and water appearing on the artwork

All the HGSS sets are so underrated as far as artwork and design are concerned.

Should be #13, not #12 I believe

I am godsmacked with the art work shown here. I skipped the G/S games, I wasn’t into Pokémon at time of HGSS (surprisingly enough I did play during DPPt-era), skipped the HGSS games as well. This set is really worth investigating for me.

And for as good as these cards here look, Unleashed is the ugliest and least coherent of the HGSS sets stylistically because it was pieced together from like five different Japanese sources. HGSS, Undaunted and Triumphant are even better.

I always really loved this border design I think the colour is really nice and gives the cards a nice look compared with the ugly yellow we have today. I’ve not collected any of these sets but the artwork I’ve seen is mostly top notch. Loving these threads as it lets me see cards I would otherwise never look into.

Actually picked up the Chaos Control Theme Deck last week because I needed to grade the exclusive tyranitar holo. Unfortunately I made a scratch on the card trying to get it out of the wrapper…

Bit late to the party but i’ve been busy!

I love the prime cards in these sets (undaunted’s Umbreon and Espeon Prime are amazing), and T-Tars are always +1
I also really like what they did with the legend cards, they’re a bit hard to display though… they would do better on a Poster lol, would displaying a Pokemon poster next to my Iron Maiden posters be weird :joy:?

I really love the dog trio  probably the strongest of trio’s Pokémon gave us.

I know next to nothing about the HGSS era of the TCG, but looking up some images from this set just reminded me how much I miss having 2D art on the booster packs themselves.
