Set of the Fortnight #57 - EX Crystal Guardians

As mentioned last time (August 2024  ), since I keep forgetting to post these, I will post two at the same time every time I do randomly remember again. So here is the second one of this month.

The fourteenth set of the English EX era, released on August 30th, 2006. This is the last set to include the Delta Species dual-type cards. The theme of the set is from a mysterious island far from the city of Holon, covered in crystals, where regular and Delta Species Pokémon live in harmony.

My favorite is probably this Kingler. Not sure why, but it’s just epic.

Some other amazing artworks from the set:

Love this set, and this is one of my favorite cards therein. Have 4 (now if only I could find the other 3), and I just can’t get enough of this gorgeous Thicc, colorful display.

Gotta go with Jirachi ex as my favourite!
Least favourite is probably a trainer

Nishida is my favorite artist, so I have to highlight these beauties.

However, my favorite card from the set might be this iconic Diglett!

Top 20 illustration of all time for me.

The rest of the best cards in the set.

Beyond those, Crystal Guardians stands out as a weak set even among its delta brethren. The Aggron is the only ex card that isn’t terrible, the gold stars are middling. The theme of the set, although aesthetically potent, is just more directionless, extraneous, entirely unwanted tcg lore.

This Squirtle from Kusajima is one of my favorites.

I miss the interesting holo patterns, they kind of just gave up on that and went generic again for the reverse holos. I will say I am glad they kept the theme going of making their own lore for the tcg. I wish they’d do that again.

Its kind of funny that for some of the trainer cards they just have straight up pictures of real gemstones. lol.

The winning artist in this set is probably hajime Kusajima. It just has such a punchy feel to the colors and action packed!

as the king hoen ho, I humbly request your break down of each set, ranking them from best to worst. It should help me focus my attention as I do want to get through all the sets for rev. holos.

You think jirachi ex is terrible? :pikathink:

I thought about editing my wording because of that one card, so know that I think it’s the least terrible one.
