Sharing Disappointing Moments

This is the best hobby on the planet, and it provides moments of joy that cannot be rivaled. But with great joy comes some disappointments, and I thought it might be therapeutic to share them. Misery loves company after all!

To be clear, this is not for anger or anything directed towards specific individuals.

I’ll start with something very recent that I shared with some people already

I was extremely excited to hear the news that Clefairy and Clefable were going to be in Shiny V. The idea that we would be getting a shiny version of what a lot of people consider to be a pretty niche Pokémon was very exciting but I didn’t let myself believe. When the total number of secret rares was revealed as an extremely high number with the set going into the 300s I allowed myself to become very excited at the idea that it was going to happen.

To celebrate it I went ahead and made a small cheesy thing to celebrate it

Shiny Clefairy Confirmed =3 - YouTube

Staying up into the wee hours of morning I refreshed Mercari over and over to see all of the shiny Pokémon popping up until the full reveal that it wasn’t in the set.

Woops haha, set myself up for it there

At least the video is relaxing! Hahahahaha. I never had any disappointing in modern cos I never had any expectation to begin with, that’s key

I have my health, my family. Too busy celebrating life than to dwell on disappointments.

Amazing rares being so common

Lol, sorry to hear about your shiny disappointment. I’m pretty happy with the trading cards, but my disappointment is with the games. I got my hopes up for something completely different and new for a pokemon game when the switch came out, but it always feels like the same game with a new gimmick which is getting a bit stale for me so I’ve decided to just take a break from the games for a while.

I feel you, I wish they wouldn’t water them down so much. SWSH just feels like Pokémon go for switch. I’m just going to stick to gen 5 and prior

That’s unfortunate but it’s definitely an aspect of the hobby. I bought some zards from a reputable shop and the cards were listed as beautiful and no flaws condition to get junked out red tag markdowns. Happened yesterday. Can’t win them all I guess.

I was sad to learn of the lack of a Shiny Clefairy.

I remember when the concept of Pokémon Primes were introduced for HGSS, first referred to as “Great Pokémon” in the English translation, being hopeful they would release a Chansey Prime a la Chansey ex. We did eventually get Blissey but… Just not the same.

Tyvm for that, really made me feel better haha. 2009, were you 16 at the time?

I’m 25. I was 14. Jeez I think I’ve been on Pokémon forums half my life at this point.

@qwachansey , if you want a good chansey card the next time their is some kind of art academy style contest you just need to pay some of the worlds top artists to all submit chansey art. It’s too bold to fail.

Also sorry to hear you didn’t get your shiny clefairy, I was shocked when someone messaged me on IG earlier today just to let me know shiny V was getting a shiny suicune. And it’s orignal art not just a variation! Felt like winning a small lottery.

I remember i saw an ebay listing for ex crystal guardians packs slightly below what they were going for at the time. They looked legit and the seller had good feedback so i bought one. Then later on i was like you know for that price ill buy two more.

A week goes by and they come in the mail and they were opened. Obviously my heart sank lol. Being in high school i spent like 120 or so on them just to come opened. I then was like im going to contact the seller and get a refund but then i read the description and saw they were “repackaged”

After that point i felt like an idiot and then just accepted being out like 120. Pretty sure i took about a year break from the hobby after that one!

A positive thing from that experience is ill never not read the description ever again.

I was searching eBay for Diamond and Pearl packs a few weeks ago and found an ad selling them cheap, or so I thought. The ad had a picture with all 4 pack arts and said you would get one of each if you asked after paying.

I paid and then messaged only to get a message from the seller later saying that I only paid for one pack. Luckily, the seller decided to offer me a refund.

I’ve never felt more foolish.

I’m a little disappointed with the sword and shield sets we got so far. At the end of the sun and moon era there were so many great cards and ideas. Character cards, tag team cards, alternate arts and non-fullart shinies (which come back now with shiny star v).

I feel you, I was expecting Salamence to finally get a shiny card in Shiny Star V… but nope :slightly_frowning_face: Maybe one day.

  1. Selling 1st edition base charizard for $500!
  2. Selling 3-4 gold stars PSA 9 for $35 each!
  3. Had an offer for $14k for one of my cards last month but rejected it due to the buyer having 1 feedback. Prices have dropped rapidly on this
  4. Buying black&white booster boxes in 2016 when I could have spent a bit more and gotten team rocket 1st edition (which I had my eye on but felt it was way overpriced)
  5. In general not buying anything when I had the money. I wasn’t bothered with the hobby and just like many got back during these pricey months of the pandemic. But I’m still buying now regardless of the prices

Technically I still don’t call them as disappointing moments or dwell too much on this. Those were right decisions during that time. I bought the zard for $350 and it was the first card I ever sold. For me it was can I actually sell Pokémon cards and would people buy or am I spending on crap. Selling the zard for $500 legitimized the hobby for me. There’s no price that I can attribute to that.

I think a lot of us know that feeling. It also feels kinda awkward and exciting to sell a card for much more than you bought it for.

Sold a card in person last week and my hands were still shaking half an hour later.
