So buying cards from Japan just got 24% more expensive

Thanks Trump (I’m not American, nor do I live in the USA).

Here is a list of his new taxes on Asian countries into the USA, PLUS 10% tax on all UK imports and 20% on all EU imports.

How does this affect collecting?

1 - As someone who sends cards to the USA for auction this does impact me. I’ll likely not be using Z&G anymore.

2 - US located card businesses buying from Japan will have to pay minimum 24% tax + fees

Not sure how this will affect grading submissions to PSA etc as they should be done on temporary export documents…but I don’t have to worry about that as BGS now has it’s EU on site grading hub! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Tldr, higher prices and less demand for US auction houses for international submitters.

PSA already closed submissions from other tariff affected countries. I’m really worried they’ll close international orders completely.

Again, shouldn’t be really affected as there should be some temporary export exemption - but a big issue is the ambiguity in all this.

Not a great way of running a business.

Shouldn’t matter, but if PSA dont let us submit because they’re worried about the ambiguity then its doomed for all of us over here in the uk and the eu

So when I still use the 2009 conversion of ¥100 = $1 it will now be correct!

So now it’s +24% for cards from Japan to US.
Then they’re already talking about “strong response” from targeted countries for more impactful duties…

If understood correctly, at least for now, goods (cards) from US to world are subjected to the same usual duties with no increase?

I guess we’ll find out with time if this is correct or not. I’m not holding my breath given that the executive does not have direct control of interest rates and Jerome Powell in the recent press conference stated interest rate cuts are being held off as they were seeing early signs of inflation increase specifically calling out tariffs.

For now yes. Eu hasn’t done any response. Probably won’t change that tbh as we already have 20% vat in most places.

Who would have thought that indirect government meddling is what saves helps bgs in the international market.
