It would be funny if Scott made a video or if another member bought them out.
I thought about buying them out as well, but I only want one PSA 10 espeon for my collection so I passed.
Regardless of market manipulation talk this is effect one Youtuber on the market. Imagine all those people telling newecomers to invest in XY or XM era boxes and cards. They are definitely having an effect.
I think many people underestimate the influence of the more popular youtubers on the market, some are even trying to make it sound like it’s some ridiculous conspiracy theory. At the end of the day, almost everyone who’s trying to make the best purchase will watch what the big fish have to say, and many of the more valuable cards have a small PSA 10 count. Why should I assume that people will just look at a card the same after the biggest names in the hobby have praised said card as an amazing collectibe?
If you click on the individual listing you’ll see 20 sold. When I looked shortly after watching the video there were still nearly 10+ on the listing available
jim cramer talks about stocks and people buy the companies he likes, why is this any different?
TCA, SMpratte, PokeRev, Gemmint, etc… have all been successful pokemon collectors, investors, resellers. Following the footsteps of successful people is typically a nicely paved path to success.
If people want to blindly follow any information these youtube channels provide, go for it. Its nice to have another perspective on what to look out for when i get stuck in tunnel vision on one specific card or set of items.
Youtubers absolutely have an impact on the hobby and what people buy. But that doesn’t mean it’s nefarious or they’re trying to manipulate the market, their platform is making content for people in the hobby. Plus, with thousands and thousands of views, it only takes a handful of people to buy out the market after they see something they like. Hell, let’s say a video gets 10k views on a topic. If even 0.001% of those viewers (10 people) decide they want to do something about it, that product’s gonna be gone in a second.
Do I think there are people doing shady things in this hobby? When cards and boxes are going for thousands of dollars, yeah absolutely. But, to me at least, the more public exposure a figure has, the less likely they’re going to be engaging in that shady stuff, they have much more to lose than to gain. Plus, we all have impacts on prices as well. Any time we buy a card above the highest last sold, we’ve set a new high price and changed the market. Shady stuff happens but it’s likely that the ones doing it are the ones we don’t actually have a face to put on. Just my opinion.
I agree. There are some people on youtube who straight up talk about a set or certain card to their patreons first while the prices are low, then a day or two later release a public video on it. I know PSA collector on youtube does this with sports cards for a fact. Straight up said it. So it gives people time to buy low, and then the horde comes and buys for a premium. I don’t really see this happening (on purpose) in the PM community though. Everyone here especially the big names that have been doing it for a while are just making content. With the market being crazy right now I guess the speculation is bringing more people into the hobby and eating up supply, so of course a small niche item will disappear. Just my 2cents
I will use this example.
Scott has put out many videos and certain cards. I don’t buy everything card he says, only ones I am interested in.
He did a video on players club. I bought many of those. Not just because he did a video, but because I loved the cards and didn’t know they existed.
They can move the market some, but I doubt everyone is out here buying every card they talk about.
Whenever something like this (like with the PLAY promos) happens, it makes me contemplate what crazy movements would happen if all releases suddently had the same exposure as base set. Exposure usually takes time, but these videos draw comparatively big attention at once, thus the spikes on niche stuff.
Yes thats why i’m cautious lately, lots of cards are driven by instagram hype. Imagine tca, but 1000x. Once instagram moves on to some other cards so do prices
Yes, there are a lot! Most of the accounts showing modern stuff though. But there´s also some (big) vintage collectors on there. Depending on who you deal with it can be really fun or a waste of time.
Obviously it’s not your fault or tca’s channel, both of you are very informative on your videos. Thing is how people take those channels as gospels for other purposes, it happens with everything in life tho.
