Tcg Players

I’ve never played the tcg competitively or really at all. I collect mostly wotc. But I am curious about what it’s like for a tcg player who grew up playing base, fossil, jungle, and so on compared to now. I was looking at base set Mewtwo earlier and 60 hp, 10+ for damage is pretty bad compared to even some of the commons out there now. Obviously there’s going to be a power creep. But I’m just wondering if it’s better or worse from back then and what it is like adjusting.

I didn’t competitively play until 2008, but I’ve played with a few vintage style decks with friends. IMO the very first decks were usually quite dull to play besides the nostalgia factor, because there simply weren’t that many cards to pick from, and a lot of people played the same decks (Hitmonchan/Scyther, Blastoise, Alakazam/Chansey all popular). The power creep in terms of *Pokemon* from Base to now is huge, 99% of WOTC cards, besides ones with unique Pokemon Powers (now called “Abilities”) would be useless. However the *Trainers* were very powerful back then! You can probably adjust pretty fast, I’ve taken long breaks from playing and picked it up again even with new rules & new formats/competition styles going to best of 3.
