The Age Old Classic: Shinings vs Crystals

Recently I have complete my Gold Star PSA 9 set, and would like to start on Crystals or Shining collecting. I really like the Crystals and Shinings, but leaning more toward the Crystals currently. Because I can’t decide, I have just been doubling up on GS PSA 9s.

I will eventually end up collecting both types of cards, but will focus on just one for now.

Which do you believe have the highest growth potential on a 5 to 10 year time frame for PSA 9s? And which should I start collecting now?

Shinings
11 card set
first edition and unlimited (con)
older (pro)

Crystals
9 cards set (pro)
better art IMO (pro)
reverse set (con)
cool border (pro)

If you like the crystal art better you should go for that. Everyone will tell you something different when it comes to growth on these cards. Just collect what you like the most

Having both I think whilst some of the shinings are nice, the crystals have so many examples of phenomenal artwork. I’f I had to choose to only have one of the sets I’d definitely go crystals personally

Since there is no 1st Ed for the E series its tough to compare. My personal preference is shinings. They are the original chase cards.

I prefer Shining over Crystal for exactly the same reason. They feel very old school.

Plus how can you not want a Shining Magikarp?

personally I think the shinings from neo revelation > crystals >>> shinings from neo destiny

Agreed. While I know people go crazy over shining Charizard, the card honestly does nothing for me other than be a chase card. And none of the other shining artwork from the Destiny set looks that good to me.

I prefer shinings due to the way they look, its simple and clean.

i like some from both and dislike some as well. love shining magicarp gyarados and noctowl. dislike the rest.

crystal wise lugia is my favourite card in the tcg and charizard is my least.

If you plan on buying both eventually, I’d start buying both at the same time and prioritize the more expensive ones

I prefer crystals all day. No confusion with 1st editions or anything. The are entirely unique, never recreated. Shinings have been kinda made ish again in shining legends, obviously not to the same nostalgia/market price of the old school. Crystal also have way more popular Pokémon.

I know that this would be the most logical, but honestly I like set collecting so much I think it would take the some of the fun out of it :stuck_out_tongue:

My recommendation will be Shinings because my older brother pulled one as a kid (unlimited Shining Gyarados). I have never seen a Crystal back then. Therefore Shinings have greater nostalgia to me.

If you are going to own both sets eventually, you are better off going for the set you like most. I have no idea if you have more nostalgia towards Shinings or Crystals but you can answer that yourself.

As to growth potential, both are equal IMO. A lot of collectors like to own them, but there is a lot out there to satisfy demand. I know the argument of 1 million people wanting a card that has 100 copies in PSA 9/10 but in reality, out of these 1 million people, those who are willing to fork out $1000s for a card have already done so. So both sets can only experience very gradual increase moving forward, especially in PSA 9s.

Long term investing is like a slow leaking tap dripping into a spinning cup. The water level will rise but if the cup spins too quickly, the water will spill, keeping the water level below a certain point. Some cups spin less aggressive than others. If your horizon is long enough, it doesn’t matter which will do better because no one can predict that. Good luck!

Crystals are low tier, gold stars are worse, shinings are cool, and common aquapolis grimers are god tier.

Crystal Charizard is an unimpressive card.

Guess i’ll add my two cents- besides me being a huge E-Series fan, you could also add the part that the Skyridge set was/still is the last set that printed reverse holo secret rares.

Still don’t really get why people don’t really like the reverses but prefer the holo variant… i mean they are damnAss pretty, but them reverses are soooClean. I wouldn’t note it as a con that there are reverses to collect…

Im not biased at all bytheway

Ultimatly it comes down and the art YOU like- they are both great cards to collect.
