The Pokemon Graded Card Market Feels Weird Right Now

Maybe it’s crypto. Maybe it’s the stock market. Maybe it’s complete random noise, but things feel a bit spicier than normal.

That is all. Please move along.

I’ve said this in other threads but I’ve stopped buying graded and I’m selling most of my graded items.

I’m still open to grade cards for selling purposes if a market is there but I don’t want any myself.

This is mostly just a personal preference more than some sort of market prediction or premonition.

Grading just feels boring. Especially with modern. Cards are printed almost flawlessly and tens of thousands are graded at the highest grade. Sure, modern alt arts are beautiful, but it’s mostly about the money not the card in my opinion.

Youre not wrong. I sometimes wonder if people think to themselves “man, im the only one collecting graded cards these days” trying to cash out later or something. There are too many modern graded slabs as you were saying, and I have alot of answers to questions that havent popped up yet lol.

Ironically I feel like most no rarities are selling for cheaper than ever.

One thing I have noticed is lots of people in Japan collecting cards on the mobile game recently

I only see modern cards acting unpredictable lately, anything pre 2016 seems to be status quo.

@Dyl creating a cryptic topic with no info and then leaving it up to us to decipher

What do you know dyl that you can’t tell us

Same, I guess it’s because I’m not playing in the graded modern english sphere?

Have you seen English Gold Stars in PSA 9+ grades lately?

It’s not just modern. Quite a few other highly desirable English vintage cards are seeing higher and higher sales too.

Ahh, I haven’t keep a close eye on that category. I follow the japanese side more closely - and I actually just saw a JPN Groudon gold star PSA 10 sell for $1,300 and Kyogre for $1,400. Shockingly low from what I remember

EDIT: After a quick price check that seems to be in line with other sales, man Japanese is getting left in the dust!

Yeah, with the exception of rare prize/trophy cards (Design Contest, Art Academy and anything above) and popular promos like Masakis, JP has really taken a hit. Might reflect the sentiment in the West that JP cards are less investible due to the over-printing of current sets, or a deflationary environment caused by 2023’s “waifu bubble”.

Not a bad time to be a buyer tho for JP cards with so much history behind them.

I really want to know where that sentiment comes from. For example, is SV2a printed that much more than English 151? I wonder what the average JP vs English set print run comparison looks like

I have noticed Shinings, Gold Stars, Crystals, all have seen a pretty good increase over the past 6 months due to smart money moving into actually rare items.

It is currently a great time to go into anything Japanese! As I say this, I recently purchased a 5 figure card that hasn’t sold this low since 2020! I am ecstatic :]

I just wish more attention would shift over to English so the Japanese would be more inclined to decrease their prices

But oh well, back to auctioning off modern cards

Huh? How much more attention can English get?
