Now that CGC has released their new grading scale for some time now, I’d like to hear some thoughts from the community on how it compares with PSA.
The general consensus is CGC’s older grading scale is harsher than PSA and that’s definitely been my experience as well. Do you guys still think that is the case?
That seems to be the case, at least with vintage. The old/original grading standard seemed very harsh at times where it was generally really difficult to ever get a 10 grade of any sort, especially on WOTC holos. 9s and 9.5s could be PSA 10 quality at times depending on the card, especially anything modern.
With the first label update, a lot more 10s started showing up it seems. Now with the newest label, there’s an abundant of 10s since all the old and original 9.5s got bumped to 10 as well and a lot of people seemed to have flipped them by getting the label replaced.
People like 10s, so some people see the change as a positive while others see it as a negative. It might smoothen out more over time, but for now things are a little foggy it seems .
If the old 9.5’s are new 10’s, and if they supposedly did not change their grading scale, what does that make the new 9.5’s?
I think the pristine 10’s will stay competitive with PSA and BGS 10’s. I think the GM 10’s will stay somewhere between the old GCC 9.5 prices and the old CGC 10 prices. I have been seeing the GM 10’s sell for quite a bit higher than the old CGC 9.5 prices, mostly for cards under $1k, but it hasn’t really been consistent. Some sales I’ve seen as low as the old CGC 9.5 prices
How have the pristines been doing? I know there is tons of talk about the 10s but pristines are supposed to be black label territory right? Or is it a bit less than that? I don’t follow that stuff
I’m particularly and genuinely interested in the PSA 8 - CGC 8 comparison.
Is PSA routinely better in this case? I own a couple slabs of both in that grade, and even when searching on ebay, I’ve always thought them as something pretty interchangeable in that range.
I’ve always found 8 and 9 to be pretty interchangeable although I think some 8s I’ve have a little too much whitening. It’s anything under that that is a free for all since they use much different scales.
