Thoughts on reverse holos in master sets

Hey everyone, I don’t really build “master sets” or even complete sets for the most part. I usually just collect specific cards that I like in addition to one of each for the pokedex. But I am working on an aquapolis “master set” just for the lols and cause its a cool set, but I don’t have any reverse holos for it. Usually I just buy big collections from people and sell off the reverse holos to make some money back. I recently bought a lot from someone that has a good amount of aquapolis and expedition reverse holos. I don’t need the expedition ones, but it got me thinking, what are everyones opinions on master sets or complete sets with or without reverses?

Do you think they add a ton to the value? (talking e series sets)

I personally wouldn’t call it a master set without reverse holos included, and I assume most others probably feel the same. Reverse holos for older sets would definitely add a lot of value if you were selling a “master set”

I agree with @dilbert,'s above comment. I myself dont really appreciate the reverse holos (depending on which set, as the Sword and Shield ones look much nicer than other IMO) but a master set would require them. I have 2 Hidden Fates master sets with them all, and typically depending on the set theyre not to difficult or costly to obtain.

Yep! Without the reverse-holos in my opinion, it would just be an ordinary ‘complete set’, but with the rev-holos it upgrades it to a ‘master set’. For WOTC E-Series, collecting reverse-holos (in decent raw condition) is pretty hard to find, so that would add tons of value for a true master set.

Currently, I’m working on completing a NM master set of Skyridge, I have everything so far except the big-boy crystal holos and basically most reverse-holos, but gee, finding those reverse-holos can be pricey at times. Of course, Skyridge is an overrated set, but I’m sure it can be almost the same thing for Aquapolis. Expedition is pretty easy and affordable to complete compared to the other two. Master sets add great personal value as well as value-value.

*personally, I believe the box-toppers for the sets contribute to the master set as well and all are at a great price atm

Completely agree with @doctordarkrai here. The inclusion of Reverse Holos is the difference between a Full or Complete Set and a Master Set. It’s a bit more nuanced than that, depending on the set. The difference between Full and Master can be really subtle: a Full 1st edition Base Set would contain 102 cards whereas a Master Set would imo contain 103 cards. And yes, for sets that have box toppers, I would consider those as well in the Master Set.

Master sets even include staff stamped cards so they definitely include the reverse holos
