Time to buy yugioh?

Seems like pokemon is flying off the shelves while yugioh prices are stagnant. Given yugioh is a younger hobby, would sth similar happen in the next 1-2 years? Time to buy?

I personally think yu-gi-oh is too unpredictable. It also doesn’t have the momentum and breadth of different elements like Pokémon does.

Will it go up? Probably some, but if you have money to spend strictly to invest, idk, i’d just put that money into Pokémon personally…

In the last couple days I’ve had a couple people message me out of the blue to buy my LOB 1st box. SDK Blue eyes auctions have ended unusually high recently, it may have already started.

I’d rather just… continue to buy what I enjoy

Yugioh has moved already. Things I bought last year have nearly doubled and they are not particularly rare or expensive. I just sold a magic ruler booster box and had a buyer within 20 minutes. Demand seems to be pretty strong

sealed items have started to shoot up. zexal boxes have already increased by 20% over the last month. 5ds boxes have also started to climb in price significantly. 1st ed boxes for that era are starting to become scare.

@sgbased, what are you looking to buy? singles or sealed? sealed def buy now. singles not so sure on because i feel like prices might come down once more cards start getting graded. grading yugioh is still very new comparatively

i’m not sure, haven’t bought much recently so genuinely asking for thoughts. prices have been relatively stagnant for awhile and i always find it interesting when that happens.

Yugioh ultras have a 1/12 pull rate and ghosts have a 1/288 pull rate so although the franchise isnt as big as pokemon, there’s a real chase for certain cards which people haven’t fully noticed yet i feel sometimes.

i’m more focused on big cards now like the prize cards, unfortunately yugioh ocg doesnt grade much so just camping for more cards to come.

No

Yugioh got me out of buying pokemon cards when I was a kid and I regret that decision, so I will pass on Yugioh.

Seems like a very risky gamble to me, while much better alternatives are available.

Magic ppl probably had this discussion about Pokémon when Magic was shooting new highs.

I’m buying some YGO here and there since before the Pokémon spike but mainly because I like them!

I like Yugioh. It’s a nice change of pace compared to Pokemon, because you can actually think about a purchase for two weeks without the item tripeling in price in that time
As opposed to Pokemon, I only collect North American 1st Editions in Yugioh. That’s because I don’t have as much trust in value stability of Yugioh in other languages.
I had to limit myself pretty strictly, because I still need most of my money for Pokemon. The main focus for chase cards has always been playability, so I mainly chose my cards by their historical significance in the TCG. For now I have the Chaos Emperor Dragon (IOC-000) and Yata-Garasu (LOD-000) in PSA 9 1st Ed.
Jinzo will definetly follow and then maybe 4-5 other Secret and Ultra Rares.

If you’re looking for potential in value increases, IMO PSA 9s and 10s of the first three sets are still pretty good deals. 1st Ed Tri-Horned Dragon, the first Secret Rare of the first Set in PSA 9 is around 500$ and in PSA 10 around 1000$. Sounds pretty good to me. Also everything else outside of BEWD and DM is pretty affordable. For promos and Trophies I have absolutely no experience.

I don’t think there will be as many full PSA 10 set collectors for everything after the first three sets, so I’d mainly focus on big powerful iconic chase cards.

For now I think there is way less activity in YGO collecting than in Pokemon, the lack of a central forum like e4 might be part of the reason.

I started buying some older yugioh cards recently but mainly because I enjoy having them, and seeing them in a binder the same way I enjoy Pokémon cards.

I think you should buy things that you would be happy to have in your collection even if the prices don’t increase.

People do not give yugioh enough credit. It came to the US in 2002 which is a few years after pokemon so it is lagged when it comes to collecting at the same level as pokemon. Personally, I grew up more playing and collecting yugioh cards than pokemon cards so I def have more of a passion for yugioh and do not understand why everyone harps on it so much. There is def a strong player base that is growing and maturing into the age of collecting. Look at how ex era pokemon cards are starting to finally catch up in price to what the actual supply is. This dead era coincides with the release of yugioh so most likely those collectors have some sort of overlap due to age. Are most boxes $4-7k? no they are not but that does not mean that when a box goes from $100 to $200 you still didnt just double your money. Do i think it will ever reach the prices that pokemon is? no i dont. pokemon def has more has people interested in and more people with buying power but that does not mean that yugioh is bad and you should stay away. if you like yugioh you should buy what you like. dont let people who dont like this game tell you otherwise.

I really can’t say much about Yugioh other than that it was pretty big in 2002. I remember that because it was my first year of high school and the nerdy kids weren’t bringing their Pokemon cards to the cafeteria but they were bringing their Yugioh cards. The Dark Magician, Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Time Wizard are the only cards I really remember.

Buy yugioh if you like, but honestly I’ll stick with pokemon and mtg
