Top ten most popular Pokémon? (TCG prices)

A recent discussion got me thinking about what the most popular Pokémon are right now. Has Charizard been dethroned? Or is it still the very best (that no Pokémon ever was). Also, what Pokémon have moved up (fast). We’re talking strictly about the TCG here, so yes, I know that Glalie is super popular among VG players that like to annoy their opponent into rage quiting, but I would have to say that it is (unfortunately) not very popular in any other area.

To me it would seem to be like this;

  1. Umbreon
  2. Gengar
  3. Charizard
  4. Rayquaza
  5. Mew/Metwo (tie)
  6. Pikachu
  7. Gyarados
  8. Lugia
  9. Gardevoir
  10. Espeon.

Now, I will say this; I still consider Charizard to be the most popular Pokémon in the TCG, but right now the hype surrounding the Moonbreon (which seems a bit much) means that at the moment, it has been overtaken, and not just by Umbreon but by Gengar as well (although this is much more close). I doubt that this will last however. Charizard seems more popular (in the TCG) with people that have actual love for Pokémon.

I think I agree with your top 5, however I’m extremely interested in hearing a potential top 15.
Cause when you move towards the bottom of the ladder things are getting increasingly harder to guess!

Rayquaza over charizard, gengar, and Umbreon and the list is good.

Pikachu not being in the top 5 ? Start again

Don’t think it is mate. It has one very overhyped card, but when we start to look at Pikachu cards without this hype (Surging Sparks was the peak of the hype) it starts to look very different. I remember there being a very low pop secret rare Pikachu in Noble Victories that is about 700 dollar in a PSA 10. Don’t think that would be possible with the Pokémon above it.

I like Pikachu being #6, but Gardevoir and especially Glalie are hard to imagine being so high.
I think eevee should be somewhere around 7-8 place

You’re underestimating how popular and big Pikachu is if you put it at #6.

Yeah, the Glalie was a joke. I ran out of inspiration. Gardevoir is an interesting case. It seems to be very popular, but in the TCG not so much.

Just from the nature of being a starter, I think Blastoise and venusuar would outpace Gardevoir.

Probably any starter would

You’re forgetting the hundreds of promo cards featuring Pikachu

Adding some notes to my list:

  • Everything below #5 doesn’t really matter
  • Gardevoir goes in the waifu tier with all the young female trainers (which operates outside the normal ranking system)
  • Typhlosion and Feraligatr could go in #8 even though their popularity is mostly a niche phenomenon among casuals and obligate TCGers

Placing Gengar rather low man. Sets like Phantom Forces and Fusion Strike are outdoing pretty much everything with their Gengar cards doing extremely well. Also there’s Fossil Gengar. I don’t think the ‘lesser’ Eeveelutions can compete with that at all…

Well, I have it at #6 for this reason. But to me, it still falls behind the real top dogs. Let’s put it this way; if we were to get a Scarlet & Violet set about Mew/Mewtwo or Gengar, I think it would do a lot better than Surging Sparks (if any good).

The mascot Pikachu definitely has to be #1 in terms of being identified as a Pokemon and also by name. I think most common folk who are not involved with Pokemon but have awareness of the IP would be able to know and identify Pikachu as compared to every other Pokemon.

I think as for the rest of the list, it is fair although I think Flygon, Eevee and Bulbasaur crack top 10 for me personally.

Cheers!

Yes, but the list is specifically about TCG prices ; )
