1st Print UK Edition:

All cards from this set are categorized by a circular Nintendo seal, a blue Topps logo, and it’s the only print to have black Pokemon names on the description side of the card.

Set #1: Non Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13
-90 Cards total

Set #2: Silver Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13~~have a silver/metallic foil. There is no embossing meaning each card’s texture is smooth. The colors look a little deeper in this set compared to the U.S holo, but it could just be my imagination.
-90 Cards total

1st Print (NA)

This print is categorized by an oval shaped Nintendo seal with a blue Topps logo. All the Pokemon names on the description side of the card will be in red for the rest of the printings and english sets. Note that the last nine non holo tv cards of each set (puzzle cards) will no longer differ (as far as I can tell) after this set as there is no Topps logo present to distinguish the last 4 printings different printings.

Set #3: Non Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13~This is the only time I will count the last 9 non holo tv cards.
-90 Cards Total

Set #4: Silver Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13~There is no embossing meaning each card’s texture is smooth.
-90 Cards Total

Set #5: Rainbow Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13~A new holo set is introduced. It is categorized by a rainbow/chromatic shine that gives the card a more colorful shine opposed to the silver holo. There is no embossing in this print meaning each card’s texture is smooth.
-90 Cards Total

Set #6: Rainbow Holo: This set is a little harder to find because it contains cards that are reflective on the characters as well as the background whereas every other holo set is only reflective in the background. It might only be on the TV cards but I am not sure.
-90 Cards Total (Unconfirmed)

2nd Print

This print is categorized by a oval shaped Nintendo seal with a black Topps logo. This is the first print to have embossed cards. The holo pokemon cards of this print have embossed sun rays while the character and checklist cards have a sandpaper texture

Set #7: Non Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV13
-90 Cards Total

Set #8: Silver Holo: Checklist,#1-#76, TV1-TV4~This set has no embossing but has a black logo. Last 9 Character cards should not differ from 2nd printing. Rouge Set.

Packs/Boxes

The packs and boxes are very difficult to identify from the outside for Series 1

The non-English and UK Series 1 cards come in packs like this:
image image

The boxes have text on one of the sides that says they were manufactured in the UK

You can see the difference in the packs as the U.S. sets have an extra line of text, “Gotta Catch em’ all!”, added in.

Most all of the prints seem to come in Blue logo packs except for the green logo

image

The box also has a green logo on top of it.
image image

I’ve been told the boxes without a topps logo have the print with pokeball embossing

image

These cards also come in blue logo boxes apparently.

The holo variations might be indicated by a little price tag in the upper left corner of the pack. This seems to be true for some of the prints where if there is a price tag there will be a silver foil and if there isn’t there will be a rainbow foil. I have been told by many that it’s kind of just a lottery though so don’t take that bit as hard evidence.

Other various boxes

Other

5 Series 1 tins exist that include 5 box topper type cards. They are Meowth, Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur.
7 Oversized promos also exist that look just like the regular cards except slightly bigger. Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, TV2, TV1 and Pikachu foil.
There are also some cards that were released and restamped in Topps anniversary sets. I have no idea how many there are but I have confirmed the following. 13,36,45,72,74

Boxes/Packs

It seems difficult to identify the holo variation by looking at the box or pack but the logo color seems to be consistent. There are packs with price tags and with out and it seems to be with blue logo packs that with a price tag will come silver holos and without will be rainbow. The black logo packs are hard to find the different holo variation as most seem to be the silver sand.

Non-English

There are 3 sets that were released in other languages. Series 1 contains the exact same cards as the English Series 1. Series 2 is a combination of the English Series 2 and Series 3. Series 3 is an abbreviated set of the English Johto Series 1. I haven’t found any checklist differences between non English languages other than German and French actually have the German and French Pokemon names and titles. As Far as I would assume there is a silver foil for every card in the set. There is something to consider in that there are some cards that may not be unique in Series 1. Checklists cards for Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese do not seem to differ from the English cards as do TV5-TV13 for all non English Sets. Also they seemed to consider dialects with the two Spanish languages, although not every card differs. I’ve added the languages by each series that I have personally confirmed.

Series 1: French, German, Italian, Spanish (Spain), Spanish(Latin American), Portuguese

Series 2:French, Italian, Spanish

Series 3: French, German, Italian

Nice guide! Collecting all of those would be a nice accomplishment. Finiding all those variants must be tough lol.

What is the pack market like for these?

Depends on the packs, honestly. I’ve picked up the first series packs for $1-2 regularly every so often this past couple months. So nothing too crazy.

Sam might be able to give you a better idea of the rarer ones.

As far as series 1, I still don’t have a very good grasp on how rare each of the printings are when compared to each other. It seems like red is a little harder to come by and the UK print is hard to find but that might be just because there are never pictures of the backs of packs most of the time. I’m not even sure if the nintendo logo is different or not. I imagine it would be. Most of the stuff I have purchased has been lots of singles. The demand is really low for topps regardless of the rarity so I don’t ever picture them going for insane amounts. I don’t think I would feel comfortable paying over 3USD a pack. It is also true that pack fresh is not exactly as much of a concern because I think topps was cutting the cards with a butter knife through some of the runs. It is also very frustrating because I don’t yet know how to tell which holo variation is in a pack (or if there is a way). One of my next goals is probably going to be to buy as many packs as I can find and just record what I get to see if it can be logically deduced.

In that imgur album I have linked under the checklist there are some examples of the pack variations. They were not my pictures so I didn’t feel right posting them here.

I’ve got several Non-Holo sets complete of Series 2. Still working on Completing a Holofoil set. As for the chase cards though. I am still missing some of the Die Cut cards along with the clear see-through Pikachu… Opened a bunch of packs myself from this set along with over 100 packs of Topps the Movie 2000 packs.

Hello. Does anyone know if the original series 1 folder has different topps logo/nintendo seals. I’ve been trying to collect all the different sets, & I want to keep them in the original folders. I have the UK BLUE TOPPS folder but was wondering if they brought out folders with the USA SEAL also with the blue/black/green/red logo

Was there not a series 3?

there was. I just haven’t got around to finishing the guide. Been busy with school and research amongst other things and put what’s left of my collection in “storage”. I still have all my topps. There is a lot I need to finish.

what topps do you need to finish  lets see your topps collection

I still have all my Topps. I am actually getting a really big lot of cards that I need 500++ in the next week, along with about 50 film frame cards . I am going to do scans of every card and most likely finish up all of the sets and this guide…eventually. It’s a work in progress though.

I still need a lot of the non-english sets, two of the first move holo sets, and some of the johto holos/inserts.

sounds brillant  some of the art works on these are amazing

In general are the topps sets not as collectible as the TCG? Also, for anyone familiar with these sets, how does the collectibility of the series 1 Chrome compare with those released prior, particularly, the original set? Love the look of the chrome, especially the variants.

The topps aren’t as collectible as the tcg by any means. I’ve communicated with under 10 people that collect the sets in the way this guide describes. There does seem to be a casual interest coming from quite a few people, though. The chrome sets are considerably more desirable because the quality was decent and the different patterns are really spectacular
