Hi all, I have this Base Set Ninetales that has this weird horizontal line through the holo. It’s not a scratch, and it doesn’t look like a print line. What it looks like is a separation between two holo sheets. If you look at the pictures, some part of the holo cuts off where the horizontal line is. Am I seeing this right, or is this some other phenomenon? (Note: the top part still has the same holo pattern, so it’s not one of those errors where the foil is shifted)
Just a bit curious about it since I don’t think I’ve seen it before (but I have also only recently gotten back into collecting!) Thanks for any info people can provide!
Two different holo sheets is what it looks like to me. I don’t think I’ve seen this before on any WOTC era cards that have passed through my hands, but this is very common on delta species pokemon. However, those tend to have the foil sheets joining left to right, leaving a vertical ribbon.
I have a shadowless Clefairy with a similar vertical line on the right side. I find it interesting that the angle you look at the card changes how much the stars along the line are visible. Its most noticeable with the one at the bottom.
Edit: I didn’t notice it until looking at my pictures but it almost looks like the bottom right corner is a separate sheet from the one above it and to the left?
Huh, very neat! It looks like the sheet below the horizontal line should match up with the sheet above it. It looks like they have the same pattern but are misaligned, as if one sheet was cut in the wrong place and then incorrectly aligned. The sheet to the left of the vertical line looks completely different though.
And the Clefairy does kind of look like it has a four-corner thing going on with the foil. Like @cygnusx said, it looks like the sheets are just slightly mis-aligned top to bottom, then just not aligned at all left to right!
