Value of Trophy & Prize Cards. Help!

Guys I’ve been looking into buying a couple of trophy cards for my collection. My only problem is I’m not sure on how to value these cards. Most of the time I just check sold listings to understand what to pay. But since there’s not really a lot of sells or data (I’ve even used Pokémon Price) dealing with trophy cards it makes it hard to know what to pay and what to do so I don’t over pay. Any help would help me out a lot. Thanks Guys!

@lp1, if you have no idea where to start and planning to get expensive trophy cards that range in the thousands, it does not hurt to ask Scott (the patreon that pokemonradar mentioned) for advice to get started. Investing a few dollars into insider knowledge is worth it on the grand scheme of things when you’re playing in the thousands of dollars.

If you have something specific in mind, we can always try to lend a hand!

Hi @lp1, welcome to efour. Pricing trophies is always a difficult task. You’ll have to rely on a mixture of experience, knowledge of private deals, connections, luck, etc. Even if there are any public data points, depending on which trophy card and how rare it is, they’ll be so far and few in between that it may not even be relevant by the time you have an opportunity. For items that are scarce enough, it ultimately comes down to what you’re willing to pay and and whether the seller is willing to accept. If it’s an auction, you just have to outbid everyone else. Apologies for not giving concrete answers but this is just the current reality for everyone trying to obtain trophy cards - at least from my POV.

Guys thanks so much for answering my question. I love this community. So the card I’m looking at now is (PSA 9 Mint Rainbow Energy 149/Pcg-P Winner Prize Holo Japanese Pokemon Card). I talked him down around $850, I just can’t decide if that’s a good deal.

TBH I’ve never heard of this card. Other members will definitely have more knowledge here. I just wanted to mention another way to try and figure out prices is to find comparables in the sense of similar rarity, type of release, PSA pop, appearance, etc.

Welcome and I’m glad you chose the trophy path, good luck in your journey!

Edit: You can find owners of the card on Instagram and kindly ask for what they paid or what they think it goes for

Trophy cards are worth what you can talk the seller into letting them go for

I speak from experience lol

@lp1, personally I wouldn’t spend $850 on an energy, I’d recommend these, as they have a bit more character than an energy. If you like the card just buy it
I’m referring to the Japanese versions btw

THIS for sure.
There is no set price to work to… Its down to what you are willing to pay and what the seller wants.

On this note I’ll throw in another plug-in for the Trophy Card Master List, a great way for people to explore which trophies might interest them.

This card recently sold raw on Yahoo JP in mint condition for 60,000 yen & other JP sites have it selling for only a few hundred dollars in NM+ condition. I think $850 is too high for such an obscure & very niche card. If I really wanted this card I’d be at the $600-700 range for a PSA 9. If you can’t find anyone willing to sell then I would buy raw & grade it myself, might get it much cheaper just doing that.

However I do feel like there are much more interesting cards you can get that are more investable in that range. But if this is a card you really want & passionate about getting then go for it.

I 2nd this!
