Considering a modern generation consists of up to 30 JP sets and 18 English sets over 3 years, it’s hard to call anything older than the current generation ultra modern, especially after 1.5 years into Scarlet & Violet. Time moves so much faster between the newest sets

Guys stop trying to make “transitional”/fetch happen. It’s not going to happen

How about post-vintage and pre-modern

I can accept premodern if it’s necessary

Interesting results so far. 2 people flat out refuse to use the term “Ultramodern” and marked SV as just regular modern lol

I believe that given enough time, “ultramodern” will slide to begin with SV simply due to card layout and border coming in line with Japanese. The main argument at the moment for including SWSH (which I agree with, for now) is that print runs were substantially increased compared to “the past,” up to and including Sun & Moon.

Because you can’t have an “ultra” without a “super”—it’s a rank above in superlative-ness. Just think about it, Ultraman wouldn’t make sense without Superman.

Well look at that, i had a correct answer in all the polls!

I think for the amount of time that’s passed in the TCG, the scale Vintage/Transitional/Modern/Ultramodern seems to work pretty well just now. Even then, ‘modern’ and ‘ultramodern’ are definitely sliding scales, like Koala said I don’t think you can really call anything earlier than the current era ‘ultramodern’.

The more time passes the more the different niches within the timeline of the TCG will make themselves apparent, especially because the category of ‘vintage’ being anything more than 20 years old will get way too broad. I think ‘WOTC era’ will always remain, but uncertain about what comes after. We’ve already talked about Hidden Fates through SWSH being the Golden Era of modern collecting because of how distinctly better the sets and cards are compared to preceding eras, but how this will be viewed in the future I’m not sure.

My big question is, who ratifies these eras? Do we need to consult our overlords in r/Pokeinvesting or does e4 have enough clout on its own?

In these polls sm should be split in alt art era and pre alt art era. From team up is modern, but before team up is not imo.

if people want to use transitional, technically e series is transitional.

  • transitioned to new back (jp)
  • transitioned to ex era layout (intl)

but it’s not old back anymore, so it can’t be vintage :smiling_face_with_tear:

for the record, i did vote to lump it in with vintage for the sake of simplicity

The results are in. If you’re looking for a 2-category vintage/modern split, the line is drawn between HGSS and BW.

To whoever voted Base-Neo as “transitional” you got some explaining to do.
