TL:DR What changes did you see/notice in the price leader of a certain set?
I was looking to buy a munch scream cards a few years ago and Mimikyu being the most expensive of the lot. I still think it has the best art of them.
These days it is the Pikachu munch has the #1 spot as most expensive in that set.
WE could go on hypotheticals, and data discussion about why it was like that, grading, art etc. But I was thinking it would be interesting to see what other times this has happened?
What have you noticed?
and bold predictions? (inb4 caterpie stonks charizard memes… or maybe ive been on the e4 discord too long)
Mine will be…
Carddass checklist will be worth more and take over the File n.000 for the '97 set

Interesting idea for discussion.
First example I can think of comes from PSA 10 1st ed. Gym Challenge set which I completed in 2018. Giovanni’s Persian and Misty’s Golduck were most expensive cards for long time, currently Blaine’s Charizard has highest sales prices but not by much.
In the context of WotC promos, Southern Islands was usually a very affordable set. You could get the complete binder sealed in its plastic for less than $100 as recently as early 2020. Southern Islands itself was pretty cheap, easy to find complete, and certainly not at the top of the category for most expensive promos. I have owned the sealed set three times in my life and sold it all three times because it took up space and you couldn’t even see the cards.
What I assume happened here is that people realize it contained booster packs, which turned them in to a goldmine for graders. It’s maybe more correct to say the set was undervalued for many years. The rush to procure them and flip their contents coupled with the fear of missing out from hobbyists who never prioritized them made prices explode so rapidly I can still barely believe it. Open sets sell for about $300, which is reasonable for 18 promos in 2021. But it’s still a lot more than it used to be, especially relative to the generally low price points of promos from this era.
Lots of cards saw their values increase multiple times over when covid hit, but Southern Islands stands out as a particularly meteoric rise.
EX era has been very interesting… for many years only gold stars had much attention. That changed since 2020 with multiple silver border ex cards being worth more than many gold stars. This has been due to people realizing i think that the actual pull rates for the silver border cards is similar a lot of the times to gold stars in the same box. I also think quite a few people now prefer a lot of the artworks in the silver border ex cards.
