I want them … like big time they look beautiful too me but so many owners of these slabs have them for big dolla dolla bills in PSA 9 ( my preferred grade ) so my additional question is why they so pricey if there were many given out as prize cards ?
Personally, I have no interest in these cards. The history behind their release is interesting, but they don’t really “do it” for me. I have no strong attachment to the artwork or the specific tournaments.
There doesn’t seem to be that many. The 2005 arena has only had 88 copies total graded at PSA so likely less than a thousand copies, somewhere in the hundreds if I had to guess. So there does seem to be some level of genuine rarity. Many of the art academy cards vary in graded copies but some are as high as like 60 graded copies and theres only 100 of those each.
Are there any particular Japanese trophy promos that you are fond of ? I remember you saying you enjoyed the Mysterious Pearl hence why you acquired a raw copy of it but any other Japanese promo trophy cards suit your fancy ?
I am surprised as I read on Pokumon that these were given out like hot cakes when all attendees reached a certain amount of points or won a match against a high rank professor I believe
Well hot cakes is a bit of an under representation of the grind that was required to be able to get these cards.
Both the events, Battle Road Autumn 2005 (Mew / Celebi Card) and the Battle Festa 2006 ( Dialga / Palkia) were held for limited days. Battle road was for 3 days in total on 3 different locations and Battle Festa was held 2 days each on 4 locations. Both the events were again first come first serve and every day had a cut off time, meaning that based on the tournament structure, you had to be in line before certain cut-off times otherwise you wont reach to the final stage to get the card.
Mew / Celebi Card:
This tournament was held in 6 stages. To get the card you have to reach the Premium Stage (6th Stage) where you battle the PCL employee and if you win you get the card. But to reach that you have to win 6 consecutive games. One bad draw and you lose, means that you lose your streak and start again from scratch. One of the blog posts from the card winner mentions that they got the card on the 4th attempt with their record being 15 games played, 12 wins and 3 losses. That means that they lost the games pretty deep every attempt.
Dialga / Palkia Card:
Almost a similar tournament structure, where you have to have 3 stages.
Stage 1 - Win 2 consecutive games
Stage 2 - Win 3 consecutive games
Stage 3 - Win against PCL employee to get the card
Again, if you manage to lose any one of your games you have to reset and restart again. So the bottom-line is that you need to have a flawless run to be able to get these cards. Given the limited time frame, even if you re-join the line late in the day, you were not allowed to participate because there was not enough time to complete all stages.
There is however also a flip side where people who figure out the meta and the best way to play and farm these cards if they wanted, but just trying to win everything consecutively is a big enough challenge with a lot of variables.
I would say these prize cards were not abundant and certainly not anyone could have gotten it. Again, we obviously can never know how many cards, but I would be really surprised if these cards were in the higher hundreds (< 500 copies?)
Holy poop thank you for all that info ! I would think that anymore than 500 would be too high based of what you were saying on how hard it was to achieve these cards !
I actually almost bought the Celebi & Mew promo recently, but passed for a few different cards that I’ve been wanting for a while. In the future though, I will definitely try to buy it again.
Also, in my personal opinion, I wouldn’t classify these cards as trophy cards. They are prize cards which you get for completing stages or winning the event. Although, not every card is easy to get, multiple players can still get them.
Also no. The Pearl is a prize card as well. Trophy cards for me would be something like the Tropical Mega Battle (TMB) and the Secret Super Battle (SSB) cards.
