What do you guys think of surging sparks as a investing opportunity?

I personally think its gonna be a fantastic set, but I want to hear others opinions!

What do you think sets it apart from the other sets of this era? Based on what’s been revealed so far, I feel like Surging Sparks is on a similar level to the other sets (excluding 151 and maybe twilight masquerade). To me, it’s just as uninvestable as the rest of the Scarlet/Violet sets at this point.

We have a potential for 3 or more huge chase cards, (Latias, Latios, and another girl who’s name I forgot), We finally have some more unique artwork that look fantastic, and It’s a Pikachu and Dragon themed set.

Already beats out twilight masquerade by a long shot

I only invest in sets with my favorite pokemon. If it tanks, I’ll still enjoy it.

The artworks are cool, and the set definitely has potential for some interesting cards. However, you asked about its investability. None of the Pokémon in this set are popular enough to really make it stand out from other Scarlet & Violet sets. The Dragons aren’t the most popular ones, and Pikachu seems to be featured only in its Terastallization form.

What vert should do with dishwashing money:

  • Roth IRA
  • Modern PokĂ©mon

The poll should reflect what others would recommend for someone with 50 years before retirement.

For Surging Sparks, if someone can get it at distribution pricing and sets some back, thats fine. I wouldn’t be buying it on the secondary market or MSRP as an investment.

For investments, a Roth IRA is a great option, but at his age, spending money on fun experiences is more important imo. Starting with a Roth IRA is a good way to build a habit of saving, but the amount of money he’ll put in now is small compared to what he’ll earn from a full-time job later on.
Therefore, most of his money now should go toward things that bring him joy and create lasting memories.

@Vertemes taking everything into consideration, here is what to do with post tax dollars:
20% Pokémon
20% IRA
60% blow it on teenage stuff

I would echo what everyone else has said. Nothing about this set so far screams investable to me. It’s got three things going against it imo -

  1. People are hyped about it, that means larger preorders which means more supply and hoarding
  2. The print quality is better in these later sv sets which means less people to chase PSA 10s and lower 10 prices
  3. The card art revealed so far is not overwhelming unless you like silly hats. Imo.

Some of the things that I would consider if I was to $tonk:

  • Get it at distributor pricing
  • Get it in distributor quantities
  • Have a vehicle to get rid of it
  • Know when to get rid of it
  • Know what to get
  • Never underestimate the workload
  • Branding (feedback score, contacts, follower count, reach)
  • Always monitor all numbers (opportunity costs, margins, time, percentages, courier dealerships, taxes, accountancy etc etc)

What would exactly be a investable set then?

I haven’t even gotten the job yet, this is from my money selling cards

You want sets which offer a wide variety of iconic or interesting cards and contain high value pulls. Simply having a Pikachu (Vivid Voltage) or a Charizard (Darkness Ablaze/Obsidian Flames) in the set isn’t enough to make it a surefire “investment win.” You want iconic top-tier chases that define the generation. This is why Evolving Skies/Evolutions/151 have done well and I’d bet Surging Sparks is going to become Vivid Voltage 2.0.

I have bought some sealed product recently because the prices seemed too good not to, however I’ve bought entirely Japanese. I’ve bought the following sets:

  • VSTAR Universe
  • 151
  • Paradigm Trigger
  • Lost Abyss
