As the title says, what is your favorite base set holo? My favorite is Raichu, especially in shadowless/ 1st Ed due to the color saturation. If there’s enough interest, I’m happy to do polls like this every other week for different sets!

Blastoise, something about the deepness of the blue just works for it. I would have chosen Venusaur because like you said, the shadowless saturation looks amazing.

@milhouse great choices in each tier

@dyl I really like Alakazam and I’m partial to the cards you couldn’t get out of theme decks. I felt like it made them rarer as a kid

I know only 29 people have voted so far, but I’m a little surprised I am the only one who has picked Mewtwo!

Alakazam for me. He stares daggers into your soul

Man I’m honestly torn between Charizard, Alakazam, and Metwo. My decision shifts based on if it’s shadowless or unlimited so I’ll have to take both variants into account. I’m going to have to sleep on this one before I click the button .

Alakazam is easily the most creative and expressive, no contest.

Please elaborate

This topic is just which color combination do you like the most

Lets compare the most popular cards in this survey to this:

Charizard does have a expression of angryness, shooting a fireball and clearly furious from the looks of its eyes. But multiple porportions are also wrong, most importantly the neck and the arms. It kinda downgrades the feeling because your too focused on the imperfections

Do I even have to say anything? He’s just staring off into space, kinda looking like a slowpoke. Poportions are right however, so it does look well rounded.

Now look at alakazam. Poportions are perfect from top to bottom. You can even compare this to the alakazam of today. Before we can talk about the pokemon itself, lets look at the holo pattern. A circular, spacy pattern that fills the entire card art, almost like hypnotism. Combined with the purple atmosphere feels like your in his control, his DOMAIN if I may say so

Now look at Alakazam. Eyebrows(?) clearly furrowed almost seeming to look at something like a trainer or another pokemon. He’s clearly composed while also having a mysterious feel. His art can tell so many stories. Who is he looking at? Are we currently under his hypnotism? What’s the story behind this particular alakazam? Unlike the other ones, this perfectly captures the orginal purpose of a psyhic pokemon.

Mysterious, Composed, and Dangerous. This is the top standard for all holos from base to fossil. This, is pokemon.

For 1st edition / Shadowless, Charizard is my favorite. I like the darker red version of the Shadowless card.

But in general, including Base Set 2, Poliwrath is my favorite. Although green is my favorite color (and I therefore like the Shadowles Venusaur quite a bit as well, being a green Grass-Type card with green holo artwork background; even though I don’t like the Mitsuhiro Arita’s Base Set Venusaur depicture itself all that much tbh), dark blue holo cards just look very cool imho.

It’s also the reason why the Team Aqua’s Sharpedo is among my favorite artworks:

@codytcas has my favorite profile photo :pikasunglasses:

Between Gyarados and Charizard, Arita basically took Sugimori’s stock Charizard and rotated the head / added a flame. I like the pose of Gyarados- serpentine like, and the shadowless blue background goes well with Gyarados’ colors.
