What Japanese sealed boxes (Sword and Shield or older, including Pokemon Center exclusive and specialty sets) are you currently collecting and/or investing in for the long term (10+ years)?
I know it always go back to fundamentals but it seems the element that is missing for most modern is scarcity due to large print runs. The classic VSTAR Universe and VMAX Climax just don’t cut it for me due to that aspect. Then the other side of the coin is the Mario Pikachus and Ponchos which seem expensive value wise and have huge risk due to lots of fakes. Curious to know what others are collecting.
The old fundamentals are dead in modern Pokemon. While I have not been buying large quantities of booster boxes for “investment,” I also can’t ignore free money. I’ve been buying late-SWSH special art sets, VSTAR Universe, Tera Festival, and some of the late SM era sets with special art tag teams that are still under $300 or so a box. With the exception of SM which hasn’t been to active (although less supply), I have done well.
I’ve picked up some of the 2018 SM sets as well because I see them drying up and it gives me more personal satisfaction knowing it is harder to find. I can’t wrap my head around purchasing much else newer. The only ultra modern box that is interesting to me from a scarcity and risk standpoint is the Snow Hazard & Clay Burst Pokemon Center Gym Set.
