If you are just looking to explore the challenge/satisfaction of completing a set and aren’t attached to which set it is, I recommend going for one of the cheaper sets that is also newer. I recommend one of these:
I listed them from newest to oldest. By going for a slightly older set you get the price advantage of extra stock with singles dealers, reprints having been printed if they are to occur, post-hype pricing while also avoiding any intense difficulty in acquiring singles in good condition, as is often the case with sets in the ex-era and earlier. You’re also going to be able to get packs from all of the listed sets at or below retail. This gives you the option of opening some packs for fun to start the collection out before filling in all of the gaps with singles purchases.
If these sets don’t interest you, the HGSS-era is an underrated set that has not yet gone up in price for most cards. They are also slightly smaller sets and don’t have as many Ultra Rares as modern sets, giving you another price advantage.
This should be enough to make a good decision given the specifics you’ve provided. If you do something like this and find you like/dislike certain aspects of your experience, feel free to make another thread and we can help further direct you to a set or sets that will satisfy specifically what you’re looking for. The main thing I recommend AGAINST starting out is picking a set that is expensive. You’ll likely burn out before you reach the end and it will sour the possibility of you continuing to chase new sets as time goes on!

I probably should have said this if it helps. I like nice looking Pokemon cards like the gold star cards. And in addition do you know where I should buy pokemon packs/boxes
Are gold stars the only cards you find “nice looking?” All cards look nice to someone and they are mostly done by professional artists, so the more detail into what cards you like the better!
Packs and boxes are usually most competitively priced on eBay. Private sellers in huge quantities might save you a couple dollars when a set first comes out but even they turn to avenues like eBay beyond the original window.
The older cards I like a fair bit, a bit of the new ones also. Do u have have any older Pokemon booster packs/boxes that u recommended and do u have a site like magic madhouse to buy Pokemon stuff from.
Neither of them sites have much stock and I’m in the U.K. Which would make deliverys exspensive. So would you recommend me going on eBay. The two things wrong eBay which would worry me is getting scammed and pack weighing.
For UK delivery someone else will have to speak up about stores.
As for using eBay, outside of the expensive sets there is very little fake stuff on the market. Booster boxes always have a better protection against weighing. I don’t recommend buying individual packs off of eBay under any circumstances. You might also try a UK-based Facebook group of this guy: www.ludkins.co.uk/
They can at least point you in the right direction when you know specifically what you want to buy, if not sell to you directly.
Are you looking to complete a set purely by opening packs here? If so I wouldn’t recommend any sets before the dp era because any packs you find will most certainly be weighed, on or off ebay unless you get lucky. If you like the gold star cards have you considered going for a set of those? I personally am doing that with Japanese gold stars.
Forgive me if I’m wrong but they aren’t actually from the legend maker set, the appeared in holon phantoms, the 3 Regis are the legend maker gold stars. I was meaning like a full set as in every gold star printed though rather than like sets with commons etc.
There is two things I need to ask. Sorry for asking so many questions it’s just I don’t want to buy the wrong things. I can’t find anyone who sells them as booster boxes. And the sets I have been looking at are the ex red leaf. Which is expensive I know, but I want a couple of sets that is worth collecting and interesting at the same time not to complete a set though or maybe even collecting after a while. Which I said wrong so I am sorry for wasting your time.
I just bought 8 of the 3 pack phantom forces blister packs for £90 and 2 of the 3 pack primal clash for £20. But I do like the older sets which I have got ages ago the two gold stars mewtwo and pickachu. So Yh idk what to buy after this gets delivered.
