What's that 1 Pokemon you always wanted to use? (Main Games)

Whether there was always a couple Pokemon that outclassed it, only obtainable late game, or just never got around to picking it up! What’s that one Pokemon you never used on your team(Any game)?

For me:

in Emerald, I always wanted to use Huntail/Gorebyss (just took so long to get, and would always have/want a water type by then.)
in Crystal, I always wanted to use Murkrow, but never thought it was strong enough (+ I always trained a Dragonite anyway)
In Yellow, I always wanted to use Muk cause I like its design… but trying to use a mono-poison type in gen 1 is impossible.

What about you?

Tyranitar in Gen 2. You get access to Larvitar so late in the game and raising it is super tedious. I did end up doing a bunch of Elite Four and Red battles with it eventually though.

I’ve always wanted to use Umbreon (in any game) for obvious reasons, but refrained from doing so for a long time because its very low attack stats make it difficult to use for an in-game run. Eventually I found a moveset that works perfectly, and it’s now a core part of the team

great taste :stuck_out_tongue: . What game are you using it for? And yeah I totally get that. Umbreon is great to use for the Elite Four battles with sand attack, toxic, protect, faint attack (or something like that), but kind of tedious to use during a normal playthrough.

Alakazam & Gengar.
Not always having access to a link cable was the bane of my life.
There should have been another way to evolve them other than teasing.

I’m using it in HGSS. The moveset is:
Umbreon@Macho Brace- Rest- Sleep Talk- Payback- Tail Whip/Screech
Back in Gen 4, Payback was Umbreon’s best way to deal damage. Payback has a base power of 50 but deals 100 damage if the user moves after the opponent. For Umbreon, that’s a STAB 150 attack that only gets resisted by Dark, Steel and Fighting type Pokemon. You will encounter almost no Dark or Steel Type Pokemon during the playthrough and you don’t want to stay in for Fighting types anyway because they hit Umbreon super effectively. Tail Whip (lowers defense by 1 stage) looks like a noob move at first, but it works great here. Even Pokemon who tank Payback relatively well will get problems after one or two Tail Whips. And Umbreon has all the time in the world to slowly wear the opponent down due to its amazing defense stats and Rest. Sleep Talk keeps Umbreon active while it sleeps and either deals damage through payback or weakens the opponent’s defenses with Tail Whip even further. Macho Brace is available early (held by the traded Machop in Goldenrod) and decreases Umbreon’s Init by 50%, ensuring that Payback always deals double damage. Screech is a better Tail Whip, but Umbreon learns it very late in this Gen, so you won’t be using it for a long time. I also considered Curse, Wish and Toxic, but those attacks are only available through breeding or post game, so that wasn’t an option. To sum it up: This Umbreon is a nightmare - for the NPCs.

Feebas/Milotic in Gen III. Like wtf? How do you even find that counterfeit Magikarp looking mf :unamused:

For me it was Scizor during my old playthrough of Ruby. All of my friends had moved away by that time so I couldn’t get anyone to trade Scyther holding Metal Coat for me.

Damn, I really enjoy this concept! Thinking on it, I could name some for various reasons:

  1. Lanturn - Not because its hard to obtain or late game, but because it just never was that great. Its such a cute pokemon, but I just wish it had more going for it. Same for Quagsire. (also note: im not someone who knows stats or anything in depth much, ive always been a casual player)

  2. Anything obtained via an event - as a kid i didnt really get the privileged of getting to go to anything of these sorts, as my parents wanted nothing of me and my interests, so that was a bummer. Even moreso when games aged they had events which could only be done during those times, so lots need to be accessed now via hacks which is also quite disappointing. All and all, It would make my playing of heartgold now so much more enjoyable, but what can ya do lol.

I always wanted to use Pokemon that only evolved via trade, as I imagine many people did.

For those who never got to use event Pokemon, you can actually use them right now without hacks if you’re interested.

I am pretty basic and ever since Blue version, I have always wanted Mewtwo and Dragonite in my party.

Mewtwo has always been the hybrid of Pokemon while packing a jet engine of horsepower and Dragonite was always a tank of a dragon type.

This is definitely my answer, too. Actually, most of the Pokemon I really wanted to use but never really did (or only did once or twice with a lot of effort) occurred in Gen 2. The Gen 2 games had a lot of Pokemon that were a real pain in the ass to get and to use: Tyranitar, Houndoom, Porygon2, Misdreavus, Murkrow, etc.

@boogus

You can definitely use a Poison type in Gen 1 so long as you have a good team around it. I have gotten through with Arbok on my team a couple of times in Red, and Muk is definitely better than Arbok.

Mine was always the trade evolutions because I was an only child and none of my friends were into pokemon. I wanted so badly to play with a high level steelix in pokemon silver because you get an onix early game and I loved the introduction of steel types

Not to mention the fact that the only way to get the Metal Coat before postgame was to use Thief on a wild Magnemite, and even then there was only a minuscule chance that you would actually get the item.

It was the same deal with Scizor.

Gen 2 made it WAY too tedious/difficult to acquire certain Pokemon. As much as I love Gen 2, its team-building options were arguably the worst out of all of the mainline games.

Agreed. Scizor was one if my favorite pokemon as well with the same issue. I love gen 2, it’s always been my favorite, but I felt way more comfortable with my team building in gen 3.

I typically play nuzlockes, so any pokemon with a low encounter rate

Also, pseudo legendaries like tyranitar, salamence, and metagross you cant even get access to until very very late game

Onix for me! He was one of my all time favorite pokemon but kinda sucks. Same goes for Rhydon

I remember raising my Kadabra all the way to level 100 just to find out he wouldn’t evolve through level. I remember thinking at level 99 “oh cool, a Pokemon that evolves at level 100!” nah…

Ampharos, Easy to raise and Thunderpunch is close to one hit KO with almost everyone!
