Collect-a-con is not my scene in general but I went to KC collect-a-con in 2022 & 2023 and am planning to go again this year for various reasons.
It seems a lot of people online automatically overlook KC as an option. But because I’ve never been to a collect-a-con in any other city I’m not sure why.
Is it because the sales are worse than other cities? Are the people worse? etc
Like I said collect-a-con is not my scene in general but what is it that makes KC worse than any of the cities on the roster?
I’m interested in what replies you get here. I’m to the point in my collecting that small local shows aren’t going to have some of the rare items I’m looking for. Considering going to a Collect-a-Con this year but only New Jersey, KC, Charlotte, and Atlanta would work in my schedule.
LA seems to be the headliner one. Orlando is cheap to fly to. Texas is also an easy place to fly to.
I mean, of the 12 options, MO is probably the most skippable. Most people that aren’t vending are going to 0-3 of these so they will probably be selective
Just commenting because ive never been to any kind of con and we have our hotel booked in KC and getting our passes really soon. Seeing the comments though should we just pick somewhere else for my first time?
I wouldn’t worry from an obscure gossip thread. Pokemon has so much unproductive noise. Just because the LA collectacon has more cattle doesn’t make smaller events bad. I don’t know anyone who didn’t enjoy themselves at kc. Even op said they have fun both times. A lot of people just attend the closest one in their region.
They will all be basically the same event. Just go to the one that’s easiest for you. If anything, less people = less competition for buying things too.
Ok cool. Yeah its gonna be social anxiety overload but ive never been to a card show period and i would love to just look at all the amazing collectibles
Even heard the guy who voices mewtwo is going to be there and i thought it would be cool to see if he would personalize my mewtwo jazwares figure for my son
This is part of the reason I attend. I like buying in person when feasible but card shops/local events just don’t have the things I’m looking for.
Both years I have attended I’ve gone with the intent to purchase a single specific card, in a specific grade by a specific grading company and both times I was successful.
Last year for example I was looking for a PSA 10 Skyridge Alakazam holo (which iirc is a sub 150 pop card) and was able to find it.
With that being said the event itself isn’t an oasis of hyper rare cards. The majority of vendors will have stacks of psa 10 waifus, celebrations charizards etc bc that’s apparently liquid in todays market.
I’ve actually found that the vendors with the rarer items are far less busy whereas the vendors with lower end stuff have a line of people wanting to negotiate a $5 discount on a $30 card wrapped around their booth.
The amount of people is certainly anxiety inducing but prepare yourself for the cosplay odd balls. Last year I was washing my hands in the bathroom. When I looked in the mirror someone exited the stall behind me wearing a prop gas mask, prop bullet proof vest with a prop gun.
Nearly had a heart attack. I have no idea why they let people wearing that stuff come in.
Ah I was assuming folks were skipping it because of some other reason but the logistics aspect certainly makes sense to me.
It’s always a blast and worth it if you close, just like the others. It gets flack for being a “smaller city” but the con there is alive and well. All the poketubers who actually went there before love it. If you dont pay attention to the poketubers making jokes on avoiding it you literally can tell no difference in the experience on the tables experience. If anything you may move through the signature lines a bit faster which is good news for all messing around there.
I’ll be taking my son and brother and we are all first timers! I’m dressing as Bulma from DBZ so say hello if you see me. We are looking forward to just walking the floor looking at other cosplay, getting some autographs, and some cool merch. Wasn’t sure what to expect our first time but we are excited either way!
I just hope that we don’t have to wait on line outside since the heat index is going to be in 90s/100s!
