What's the deal with XY Base?

Base sets often times happen to be some of the worst performing in the era as well, so just kind of trying to figure out where the $1500 price tag is coming from? Looks the chase card is a Blastoise worth maybe $60 raw?

Obviously an old set but there are a few sets from XY that are not even near $1000 yet.

Recently (last few years I mean) there has been the same understanding/rumour within the sealed investing area of the hobby that base sets are ‘printed less’.

No idea if its true or not of course, but clearly enough people believe it and thats all that really matters

from what I’ve witnessed

sealed booster box prices are associated with their psa10 prices and not the raw card prices.
People price in potential
Blastoise has comps around $2,000
Skarmory has comps around $1,000

and then there is an additional 10 cards worth between $100 and $450 in a psa10
doesnt matter if the actual pull rates are low. Also doesnt matter if the gem rates are low… the market prices in what you COULD pull, and what that pull could be worth

Xy era is hard to grade and xy base wasnt printed as much as later xy sets (break-evolutions in particular) The set is also old af

Meanwhile, Emerging Powers:
Booster box price $2-2.5k
“Chase” cards PSA 10 price: $100

I think box prices of older sets have very little to do with the price of the cards in the set these days, sealed collectors (and investors) don’t care all that much about what’s inside the box

You are young, yet wise beyond your years. That set is a big skibidi pile of utter garbage

emerging powers is more exception than rule
older sets absolutely correlate to hits inside however. thats why base set 1st edition is 250k
if psa10 zard was worth only 10k then that box couldnt sniff anything close to the ask.

black and white era circa 2011 is some of the rarest boxes because this happened to be one of the worst performing times for the entire pokemon tcg. This set in particular wasnt cherished at all so sealed product is sold at a premium for it’s rarity to collectors of sealed with the intent to stay sealed as a part of the TCGs history

rarity is a big part of it. Legendary Collection was generally disregarded by the community as just a reprint. A lot of ppl even thought the cards were fake… But it costs like what, $2k? to open a single pack? and best case scenario is you pull the charizard with less than 1% odds and grade it as a psa9 and then struggle to sell it for 4k minus heavy grading fees and selling costs

but it also happens to be one of the rarest sealed sets in existence so prices will remain wacky. Its speculated there are only a few dozen of these sealed booster boxes left in the world
