What's up with Gold Stars?

Have heard a lot of talk on the forum from @garyis2000 and others about how gold stars are not a good investment. I might have missed it, but what is the reasoning behind this? I mean obviously the EX Unseen Forces stars are not good cause of the massive stash of them, but what about any others?

Supposed hoards of them somewhere or something. It’s never very clear information.

They are still decent cards, but the warning by Gary was made back when there was a massive gold star bubble.

The main concern that Gary was trying to express was to not invest a ton in something that can very quickly become saturated. When there was still a bubble, people were treating Gold Stars as if they were printed in the hundreds-low thousands. People were spending serious cash on cards that had many more copies than anticipated.

Now that gold stars have supernovaed (yeah I know it’s not a proper word), they are a reasonable item to buy or sell in the right quantity. Unless one of the apparent hoards somehow enters the market, more specifically enters via a re-seller (not a businessman), they will probably be consistently priced.

I can definitely understand that. I was just worried that there was going to be some implosion in the gold star market and they’ll all be worth $20 in a year. But even since I’ve been collecting, I’ve seen a jump in gold star prices. Just last year I purchased Kyogre and Alakazam stars for about $35 each (both graded PSA 9). Now they go for $50+.

I think main point was, don’t throw all your eggs in one basket. Gold stars are not immune to price fluctuation. I think the bubble was caused, in part, by an unusual amount of crazed inexperienced collectors. I think a lot of people were trying to be the first to complete a PSA 10 set. It’s safe to say you can blame that spike on people who didn’t really know what they are doing. I don’t think they will be that high again in a very long time if ever.

Well said.

I’ve spent lots of time and money during past years to build up my japanese gold star collection. Even though I don’t agree with all things Gary has said part of me still respects his opinions about possible hoards existing. So I simply switched my collection goals to other stuff ( for now ).

Luckily not all cards are affected by this, just because the cards are actually rare production number wise or extremely hard to grade.

Yes, As usual, Scott nailed it.
Collecting should be fun and NOT too expensive. Often times though the wise guys manipulate their hobbies which costs collectors more than it should.
Some Gold Star examples have surfaced and hurt some people quite a bit.
When I heard about these hoards I closed out all my gold stars to ebay sellers. And this was before any surfaced.
1st Editions, errors, and limited trophy prize cards are pretty safe as far as Fun and Investment are concerned.
