I played monopoly with my brother and his nephew last night and I had a blast. This kid would go into auctions and would get so excited that he’d bid well over $100 the actual value of properties and even let some go for less then $100 of the actual value if the character didn’t look cool enough (we were playing dbz monopoly). It was really fun just watching him getting really excited and then slowly realizing he was the only one without a monopoly. I did some good deals with him to help him stay in the game and it didn’t help. Even tried getting him a monopoly but he could never land on the only vacant property left in the game. Unfortunatley as expected he lost his will to continue on in the game and eventually bankrupted. I ended up falling a few turns after but that’s the beauty of monopoly.
I have great memories of playing Scrabble with my grandmother and aunts at my grandparents’ cottage before they sold it… Something about going away from civilization in the peaceful outdoors with no wifi makes me smile
My Family, Aunt, Uncle, and 2 Cousins used to rent a cottage for a week or two on Cape Cod every Summer. My Cousins, Sister, and I would either play Monopoly or Risk EVERY NIGHT during those vacations - it was an absolute blast just being able to hang-out and spend quality time with everyone!
The first thought that came to mind was of playing Monopoly while on vacation visiting relatives. My grandmother had a Monopoly board that was from the late 1930’s that I still have
Edit: Oh, and Chinese checkers! Can’t forget that one.
No games or matches that come to mind in particular, but me and my family play games (mostly card games, but board games as well) almost every time we go on vacation. Also, at my first job there was someone who collected board games, and once a quarter there was a board game evening where all employees who wanted could play some board games with each other (everyone could bring their own board games, and usually halve of them were from this collector, ). It was a lot of fun actually, and I’ve played loads of board games I had never heard of prior with my colleagues.
As a kid I loved many board games. I think “The Star of Africa” was my favorite and I played it a lot with my family. The name is my free translation of it, idk if it only exists in Finland. (The star is actually a diamond so idk why it was named a star). Here is a photo of it:
Basically it’s a map of Africa and you move on the board my rolling a dice. You move forward as many steps as the dice shows, but you can choose your own path. The goal is to find “The Star of Africa” which is a clear diamond, by turning around those blue circles you see over the red circles. It costs money to turn around one ($100) or in case if you don’t have money, you can try to turn it by rolling the dice and getting a 4, 5 or 6. Also, if you want to use the ocean path, it costs money. “Flying” also costs money (those red lines you see on the map are flight paths). Btw, the circle placements are all real places in Africa, which is nice.
You start with $300 and you can gain more money by finding gems from those same blue circles. Different colored gems are worth different amount. Some circles can be empty, so they give nothing. Some circles might have a pirate in them and if you turn around one, you will lose all your money and it slows down your game so next time you basically have to roll the dice to check a circle.
If a player finds The Star of Africa, they don’t win straight away. They must go back to one of the starting cities on the top of the map. And there is a twist - you can also find a horseshoe from a circle. Finding a horseshoe after a player has found The Star of Africa gives you the ability to compete with them. If a player who doesn’t have the Star of Africa has found a horseshoe, they can also try to get to one of the starting cities and win the game that way.
We had to create some pirates from spare empty circles that come with the game as my sister did bite some of the pirates when she got angry getting them lol (because they were easy to identify with bite marks so nobody would ever turn them around).
I used to play a lot of Monopoly with my childhood best friend too but she did always cheat and stole money from the bank. I always wondered why she always had money to buy the most expensive properties. I remember one time when she was visiting us and took the game with her so we could play. We had a pause as it was dinner time for me and my sister and we left her alone in our room. For some reason my sister went back to the room to pick up something and she saw her taking money from the bank lol! After that she took the game and went home and didn’t really want to play with us anymore
I remember three of us ages ago were going to play Risk 2210 AD and sent an invite to a friend by SMS. “Do you want to play Risk 2210?” and of course everyone’s a smartass so the answer was “why so late?”
I’ve played tons of board games over the years so that being the first thing that popped into my head is strange…
Not technically a board game (I don’t think), but I used to play Guess Who alot with my grandmother when I was younger, and I would just make up total nonsense, flat out lie about the characters or talk about completely fictitious characteristics such as their opinions and life stories rather than their appearance etc for my own amusement, most of the time she was fully aware of this but we always had a great laugh nevertheless.
When I started dating my now fiance when I was 15 or so I went over for her family game night. It was tradition they would play clue and the same person would win 90% of the time. Well I came in and won the first 2 games and they decided that was enough and I think the tradition died there!
In high school the last month of the year we had this thing called May term. We would sign up for completely different classes ranging from board games, college credit classes, or volunteerism fixing stuff up around the community. One class I took was called vocabulary challenge… It was scrabble but just a fancy name. The teacher of the class ragged on about how good she was and I ended the year with the single highest word score, and the highest total game score. She was not happy I beat her at her favorite game she taught 1 month out of the year every year.
Also many memories of winning/losing against my siblings in monopoly but I don’t talk about my losses
Very fond memories of playing 5 hour sessions of Risk with my cousins; super fun teaming up with allies then swiftly turning on them when they are weak Though we all delt with a lot of saltiness afterwards!
