What's your most disappointing set at release?

This isn´t about the ´objectively´ worst set out there. That set, it seems most people agree on, is either Base Set 2 or Emerging Powers (depending on what bothers you more, lazyness or funless).

As uninspiring as I find Emerging Powers, it is a ´second set´ which is often a bit underwhelming. You have to start simple to have a build up right? Can´t start with a banger (it is still very bad though). As for Base Set 2, I was twelve then and wouldn´t have cared if they released Base Set 3, 4 and 5 within the same year.

For me Darkness Ablaze takes it without much competition. It´s hard to mess up a Charizard set so bad that it isn´t fun anymore, but that´s what happened here. I actually stopped bothering with the TCG for a year, untill Evolving Skies pulled me back in. It´s hard to ignore an Eeveelution/Rayquaza set.

Champions Path. I remember content creators were saying how it was one of the most boring sets to open.

Very true. This set is bad. I guess it could be fun if you pulled one of those two, kind of interesting, Charizards, but trying to do so is a real waste of money.

Champions Path. The product looked amazing with all the different color pin collections and head to head gym collections, it could have been amazing if only the set was good. Then it came out and was a dud of a small set with the only cards that were hyped were shiny charizard v and rainbow charizard vmax, which both felt like reprint throw-ins to try giving it some kind of boost.

I still like the look of the sealed product but the set was such a let down.

Hot take but has to be English 151 for me.

After the delight of the Japanese release the pull rates are so damned awful I stopped opening it after like 20 packs.

hard to pick any one in particular, so i’ll say night wanderer. i feel like it was a great opportunity to do a mythical themed set alongside the new gen 9 mythical. instead it just had super boring SARs of the poison group that looked like they should connect, but don’t

Good for you. Better to keep sealed as the prices are already doubled. But yeah, the fact that there isn´t a boosterbox and the pull-rates aren´t that good is somewhat frustrating.

Black and White.

Back then there was still the faintest, most unrealistic hope that the downwards spiral during Gen 4 was just a blip. Sure, card quality is lost forever but maybe the illustrations, foiling and terrible gimmicks will improve. Early japanese box openings on Youtube looked depressing but maybe english will be totally different, as has been the case before. The new games and new Pokemon are certainly not the problem, I love Gen 5.

Once I opened my first Black and White tins in a London hotel room during release week I knew it was over. And it’s been over ever since. Even Triumphant and Arceus were fairytales compared to Black and White, and I hated both of those sets.

  1. As great of a set as it is, I think it could have been WAY better of a set. I was so disappointed with the big 3 artworks. Venusaur was good, but imo they missed the mark with blastoise and charizard.

Do you mean that you do not enjoy a set after Black & White?

While I do agree that Gen 1 - 3 was on another level, I think Gen 4 and 5 were low points. The art in Gen 6 seemed cleaner, and the en of gen 7 had the Tag Team sets that, in my opinion, are the best since gen 4.

Yes.

I hate Shining Fates too. It´s part of that Sword & Shield era that was just utter garbage.

DP was pretty rough, but stormfront → platinum was decent with the shinies

Shrouded Fable, basically the only thing it gave us was some nice looking promos

Agreed. I actually kind of like the first few sets as well in their basicness. It´s the last 4/5 sets that really hit rock bottom for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I really love 151 (Japanese especially), but the boomer in me wishes they had just done a 1 for 1 card reimagined set. Not complaining though, still love 151 and still open a box just for the hell of it once in a while.

For releases ive been actively a part of, probably Darkness Ablaze. A whole lot of nothing in that set. I remember opening a bunch of packs and pulling garbage which added to the overall distaste for the set. It was also immediately outshined by Champion’s Path and subsequent sets. It is a top 3 trash set from the SWSH era. Champions path may be lacking, but at least it has/had two cool chase cards which, at the time, were very sought after.

Champion’s Sidewalk was such a dud!!! They literally had nothing so they took 1 card from Shining Fates to make it a set!!!
