What's your opinion on the Shiny lottery promos from HGSS?

Known in English as the shiny legendaries from Call of Legends (SL1-SL11), this mini-set had a different distribution method in Japan. By buying LEGEND series booster packs, you could enter a lottery to win those cards (1000 copies for Lugia, Ho-Oh, Entei, Suicune and Raikou each, 5000 copies for each other card). Going by today’s standards, these are seriously low print runs. Combined with the fact that they are shiny and not really modern, shouldn’t they be worth much more than they are right now? I recently bought the Deoxys PSA 10 for 220€ and missed out on Dialga and Palkia being sold for nearly the same price, and it feels like that price doesn’t reflect the attributes these cards have going for them.
What do you think? Are these cards undervalued/overlooked or maybe overshadowed by Gold Stars and Shinings, or are they exactly where they should be?

Im with you that they are a bit overlooked by other cards, but the fact that they dont have unique art (call of legends had the same arts). If you compare them to other lottery promos, the gen 1 and 2 starters, they dont have the starter tax. But the reprints of these cards in english and japanese were non holo so they were still a bit unique. These cards also dont have that going for them since the english reprint had the cards as holos.

So yes, they are a bit overshadowed by other cards, but not too much.

@thymeee, yeah, their English reprints make them not as unique, I was just wondering where other people see this cards (now, and maybe in 5 years)

Its always hard to tell with matters such as this, so i cant really speak on pricepoint or undervalued/overvalued. I think for sure they are rare, but they do have the english side of things in terms of print which usually turns off some to having the desire to go after them. I for one love the cards because there isnt that holo border to them, making the art pop a bit more imo and with the added rarity it gives a great chase for a gen 2 collector like myself, but im merely one little piece of a much larger market lol.

Regardless, these are some of my most favored and cherished collection items

I’ve wanted this set ever since I was a kid. I remember the day I heard about the release & wanting to enter the lottery, but of course I couldn’t because I don’t live in Japan. I really want to get them but could never get around to it due to much more important collection goals & not being able to find them at a price I’m comfortable paying.

Personally I think these cards are pretty cool but they’re really niche & not many people are interested in them. I can see them being worth a little more in 5 years but not by a massive amount compared to where other cards will be. 8 years ago I wanted to get a 5k set for $250 ungraded, I thought it would be an amazing investment with only 5k copies of each card. I didn’t & they’re still worth around to same amount ungraded today.

@lolzicost, it’s crazy to me how an old-school shiny set with a limited print run is only niche, but the prices seem to indicate it.

Speaking personally, when I was buying the set a few years back, I would always look at the JP prices and just laugh “why would I ever buy those for that price!” That was from my, at the time, lower knowledge standpoint. I don’t remember what their prices were exactly, but they were more than the 10$ I was spending on the English versions.

I feel that the lack of exposure to their distribution method, possibly the lack of foil (good or bad, I like more foil for example), and the fact of a much easier to obtain English print run all factor a little.

Lastly is also that the cards have only recently starting growing into their popularity, we have yet to see how far they’ll go in English, let alone the specialty Japanese. For years I was wondering why no one was snapping these up. That being said, even with the knowledge I have now, I still have zero interest in the JP versions. I appreciate them And respect what they are, but it’s nothing I need to own. Hope this one ignorant fellows viewpoint was helpful haha👍

If I want to see these cards, I just open my Call of Legends binder to the back. The only people that collect these are collecting them for the “trophy” status, and not for the art.

eh, id slightly argue against this to a mild extent just because the aesthetics of the cards also play a huge role for me. The call of legends ones i truly didnt like the borders on and i felt it made it look out of place, where these i feel just let the art shine more as opposed to the COL ones. Purely subjective take here, but that had a large chunk of reasoning to why i wanted them too in addition to rarity aspects.

Again though, thats purely my own take and speculation and theres no doubt in my mind that others would easily be after the trophy aspect you mention as opposed to anything else. A lot of the LP promos are of this fashion too and I have a lot of them being they stand out to me more as i mentioned .

That’s fair, I didn’t know the borders were different until you pointed it out. I guess it just depends on the collector then

I really like them. They seem rare and they have beautiful art. I definitely want your deoxys haha. Rayquaza is another beautiful one.
