Which card or cards would you have bought?

Hey guys I’m new here so I wanted to get your thoughts on this. I recently bought a set of 17-102 base set 1st edition. The cards were mostly psa 10’s 9’s and a few 8’s. These are cards I want to cherish for a very long time. I collected as an 11 year old boy and lost all my cards at a flea market in the State of NJ, tragic story. Getting these cards again feels so great. I’m just wondering if you would have spent your available resources on the best PSA Charizard you could get your hands or would have spread over a bunch of cards. I realize this is a preference thing and maybe not such a great question, but anyway. If for some reason you think this was stupid I’d love to hear about it. I bought the cards because I love them and as an investment and I gotta say I really like the cards I got. But, I still have the itch for the king of draconic, bipedals.

Personally, I’m a card-I-really-like (Charizardz) collector rather than a set collector. I’d prefer one PSA 8 1st Ed Charizard to a set of psa 9/10 nonholo 1st editions.

Cool, I really appreciate your input!

Get what you love the most, then fill in later.

Which flea market in NJ!? Englishtown!?

I would buy Venusaur first then Zapdos as these were a couple of my favorite Pokemon growing up. Also, my dog got to my 1st Edition Venusaur and chewed it to shreds :slightly_frowning_face: still wishing I had that card.

If you had bought the Charizard you would be longing for all the other cards that you have right now. That’s just the way the brain works.

You should watch this video that Scott made. He thinks that the first edition base set stuff is one of the best investments you can make!

Personally, I’ve been buying a bunch of different things. Just recently my goal is to complete a binder WOTC set. I think that if you do decide that you want something else there is no harm in selling. Just make sure that you think about it for at least a week, to prevent any impulsive decision making.

Thanks for pointing that video out. You’re probably right about wanting what you don’t have. That’s definitely human nature.

It wasn’t the Englishtown one. I was visiting my cousin in in Wenonah, NJ and the flea market was somewhere around there. Im a fan of Venusaur too. That was a seriously primo snack your dog had that day. =( serious bummer…

As previously mentioned can’t really go wrong with first edition base as a investment so you have made a good purchase either way especially if they are cards you love. Charizard is the most sort after card and most expensive of the set of course and overtime will continue to increase in value so it also depends on if you feel you will be able to afford this card in the future if it’s something you really want for your collection.

I just bought a shadowless 9 charizard, haha. You make a great point. I decided I’m in a place right now in life where it makes sense to get collectibles. The 1st edition was just a bit more than I wanted to spend though. But after looking at the shadowless for awhile I decided I can live without the 1st edition. I feel super happy to have gotten this Charizard and to have gotten the common and uncommon set cards. I’ve really enjoyed just looking at the art. My favorite illustrator is Arita. His art is really engaging, pulls me in.

Oh I also wanted to ask you guys about my base set. My 1st edition base 17-102 set has sequential psa numbers. So as every card number goes up the psa number goes up with it. Do you think this adds any value. In my opinion its pretty cool, especially if you like numbers, but wouldn’t add much if any value.

Traditionally, sequential serial numbers only add value if the grades are all the same.

In my experience, sequential with same grade do more for liquidity than price. I might not get more than market value for a set of cards, but someone looking to buy has one more reason to go for mine.
