Why has Fossil blown up in price?

I know the likes of Lapras, Dragonite, Gengar have shot up in price but how come the less in demand cards are following suit? due to set completing or…

There’s only so many available for sale. Once the cheapest gets bought out there’s only the next cheapest… then the next cheapest…

There’s no 1 defining factor. People want the cards, some are more popular than the others so they sell for more. Dragonite is just more popular than hitmonlee, Lapras is hard to grade, et.

Very well put and understandable what do you think prices on WOTC items will do in the future?

I’ve just sold a PSA 9 1st Ed Kabutops for 100$. Even though it’s not a big increase it’s almost 50% more than what they were currently going for.

The hobby is maturing, people are realizing that the price for a 10 will just prevent them from ever getting the card, and if you are a collector, not a flipper, you will purchase the next best thing.

9s are gonna keep increase and so will sealed product. The packs are just too cheap right now.

Also, fossil has a lot of Pokemon’s rookie cards. It was the first time they were ever printed.

I needed a scyther to finish my set in psa 9 1st edition. There weren’t any so I ended up buying mine for $100. That’s how it is I guess!

For a long time I’ve been amazed at how inexpensive Jungle and especially Fossil 1st edition were compared to Base.

Base rightfully has the premium, but Jungle and Fossil complete the trilogy finishing off the original Kanto rookie pokemon cards. If people want to collect all the original rookie cards, Jungle and Fossil are just as important.

The answer is steam siege

Here’s an extremely simple way of looking at it. As recently as a few years ago, even after the Pokemon Go boom, you could get 1st edition Jungle and 1st edition Fossil boxes for under $1,000. Now 1st edition Jungle boxes go for $3,500-4,000 and 1st edition Fossil boxes go for $3,000-3,500. So it makes logical sense that the prices of the individual cards have increased as well.

1st edition Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil contain the English rookie cards, and these are the cards that Millennials grew up with. In general, these are the cards that Millennials really remember from their childhood and have the most nostalgic attachment to. So all three sets are extremely popular and will continue to be extremely popular.

But there’s a pretty obvious reason that Jungle and Fossil should not compare to Base Set, aside from the fact that Base Set has the most historic significance. The reason being that 1st edition Jungle and Fossil booster boxes are far more available than 1st edition Base Set booster boxes.

Having said that, the fact that the sets are incredibly hard to grade (especially Jungle) does give some protection to the value of PSA 10s. At their current sales price, the boxes don’t really make financial sense to open, even with some cards in the sets that sell for $1,000+ if graded a 10.

In the same context, what are your thoughts on the growing disparity between PSA 9 & 10s, primarily with respect to WOTC 1st Edition (and even some Unlimited) sets? I’ve got my opinion but you make a good point about these individual cards shooting up suddenly. To me it seems that’s becoming the case with any PSA 10, especially 1st Editions. One day we’ll even see a 1st Edition Muck holo hitting several hundred, haha. Curious to hear what you think since they generally relate.

I’m just getting back into collecting but I’m already thousands in but I was definitely surprised to be able to get a full set of 1st edition jungle and fossil of all the holographic cards for only $400-$450 range. Yes i bought them all in singles but with the sealed boxes being so much I was definitely shocked how cheap they were. Some cards were $5 range with the highest cards only being $50 range and this was for near mint or lightly played condition depending on which card. Base set first editions seem a little out of my price point so I settled for non first edition ones. I want to collect first edition neo sets but even a damaged first edition Shining Charizard is $300 range. If that was light played I’d consider it but that’s still a ton for a damaged card no matter how rare I’m sure damaged means super noticeably messed up.
