I feel like this set has a few things going for it that might make it worth investing in despite print creep. I spent about 200.00 or so collecting shiny pokemon and a few hyper rares so far.
Iconic cards and popular pokemon (shiny pokemon, test tube mewtwo, mew/mewtwo/raichu/rayquaza etc…)
Horrible centering (9s outnumber 10s in pop report in most cases)
Crimson Invasion released only 1 month after shining legends may have drawn people away from cracking product?
EDIT: I know none of this is new information and I’ve seen these specific points discussed on the forum already in different threads, but I’m starting to think this set could be a good investment and I figured this forum would be a good place to reach out and hear why I’m wrong.
It will have long term value (the 10s and some of the 9s), but it is just are what ROI it will have long term. I would buy one or two tens and hold them long term (5-10 years) for an optimal ROI.
This will led to less packs being cracked and thus a lower amount of the cards. They will not be the next gold star cards, but will probably sell for $300 in PSA 10 (for Ray and Mew and maybe in Genesect) in 3-5 years.
Sealed product could pay off but will take a few years.
Much better set than generations imo and the etb’s for generations are going for $70-80 now.
Main issue is the higher print run now compared to early generations product
This set is a good to collect for the nostalgia, but it won’t be necessary a good investment. While the prices may rise in the future, I would never consider it as a form of investment because:
In the past, most people treated pokemon as a card game and less about collecting. Most cards are beat up and destroyed. Nowadays, cards are mainly purchased for collecting purposes, meaning people take extra care for these cards. This means that the cards will not be as valuable due to a significantly higher demand, along with superior print quality.
Overprinting is a big problem, and much bigger problem than before.
Lack of a 1st edition print run makes it much easier to get a completed identical set that you finished now vs. 1 year later. It did not matter as much in the past due to limited print runs, but with giant boxed sets and lots of boxes coming with Shining Legends, this will make it easier to complete the full set compared to before.
That is true actually, and it’s not brought up enough. This played a role on the comic book collapse in the 90s. Everyone saw how valuable older comics were becoming and started buying/protecting comics. The comic market boomed with investors. Eventually the market self regulated as supply was much greater than demand. There weren’t enough collectors buying these mint 80s/90s comics and the market completely collapsed. Comic sales plummeted as people stopped investing. I’m pretty sure Marvel went bankrupt. To this day you can pick up 80s/90s comics pretty cheap.
The only reason those old comics were valuable is because nobody expected them to be worth anything in mint condition and thus neglected them. Any new pokemon set will have to overcome the fact that everyone knows to protect/preserve their cards, but the centering of the cards coming from shining legends is pretty poor which might help PSA 10s keep value.
