Are these official answers can they be used in a game, to settle disputes.
Yes.
-
What can we do if we don’t agree with your rulings? Is there anyway we can contact WOTC and tell them they are wrong?
You can email cust serv and we will pass it along BUT R&D have the final say and usually aren’t swayed (even when we offer donuts).
-
Regarding Moltres: If the opponent does agility does it affect wild fire?
If Rapidash has the Agility attack, yes, the Agility attack from Rapidash would stop the Wildfire from Moltres (it stops ALL effects from attacks).
-
Ok, if I have a ditto in play, and the other person has a Clefairy or Clefable, can we do anything (that does damage)?
It’s a stalemate until someone retreats basically. You could still do the Sing or Minimize attacks though.
-
If one-player defeats the other Pokémon with Ditto, does Ditto immediately turn back into Ditto?
No, Ditto turns into a copy of whichever Pokémon it is opposite. It would turn into a copy of whatever Pokémon the other player moved up. (Unless it is asleep, paralyzed, or confused).
-
Special power, can 3-5 energy cards be attached from your hand when used?
Yes it could (assuming you have them in your hand), and Blastoise isn’t Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
-
When electrode uses buzzap, does he count as 2 energy by itself? Or does electrode count as one and Voltorb count as one? This is because of energy removal…
Electrode counts as 1 energy card that provides 2 energy of the chosen type.
-
Regarding Porygon’s Conversion 1: How long does the effect last? If Porygon gets knocked out…does the effect wear off? If the defending Pokémon retreats…does it wear off? Or both?
Conversion effects are removed (as all effects are) when the “converted” Pokémon goes to a Bench. Even if Porygon is retreated or removed, the defending Pokémon is still affected.
-
My question is also about Porygon’s Conversion attack, if Porygon uses its conversion attack to change the defender’s type to what its strong against what would happen when its attacked by that type? Would they each cancel each other out, would it double damage then take away 30,would it take away 30 then double?
Weakness is calculated first (damage would be doubled), then Resistance is calculated (you would subtract 30 from the damage total).
-
Moves that have a Pokémon’s own name in the attack, like Scyther’s swords dance, does it mean ALL Scyther you have in play at the moment? Or does it only affect the Scyther that used it?
Those particular attacks only affect the Pokémon that used it, Not all Pokémon of the same name, sorry.
-
Scenario: I have a Fully powered Scyther Active…I have one on the bench…during my turn…I swords dance. During my opponents next turn (who has a F. Magmar) he smokescreens… If I retreat my active Scyther, bring up my unpowered one, switch him back for the powered one…do I hit for 60 w/o having to flip. Or does swords dance get cancelled too?
When a Pokémon is benched, ALL effects from attacks are cancelled. In this case the Swords Dance effect is cancelled.
-
According to my earlier question: the wildfire does not directly affect any Pokémon correct? It affects the deck… So things like Agility wouldn’t really make a difference…would they?
Ok, after a consultation, the answer is that the Rapidash Agility attack would still stop it. Pokémon always attack the other active Pokémon, regardless of where the effect ends up.
-
Regarding Mysterious Fossil: During a League session I delayed 7 cards at the start…I had no Basics and a Myst. Fossil. The Gym Leaders told me I had to play the Mys. Fossil as a basic while I argued that it should have been a mulligan. Who was right…and is there any limit to the number of times you can mulligan or draw from an opponent’s mulligan?
You are correct, if you have Myst Fossil (or Clefairy Doll) and ANOTHER basic Pokémon, you can start. They do not count as Basic Pokémon when they are in your hand (they are trainer cards), so if you only had them and no other basic’s, then you would have to Mulligan. As for the Mulligan rule, you keep doing it until each player has a basic Pokémon in his or her starting hand.
-
Say you have a Charizard as your active Pokémon. You put double colorless energy cards on it. If you use Energy Burn does the DCE turn into 2-fire energy?
It turns into a card that gives two-fire energy.
-
Base Set Charizard Pokémon Powers allows you to turn any energy card into fire, so if I attach two double colorless and I use his Fire Spin, which says discard two energy cards. Do I discard both double colorless or only one (it doesn’t say two energy, it says two energy cards)?
Charizard states you have to discard 2 (fire) energy CARDS. So in this case you would have to discard both DCE cards.
-
Regarding Evee’s Tail Wag Attack: Would it affect Scythers Sword Dance? (I would assume not since SD affects Scyther and not Evee).
Tail Wag blocks ALL attacks. Sword’s Dance is an attack. All attacks by Pokémon are “targeting” the defending Pokémon whether they actually affect them or not. Evee’s Tail Wag prevents the defending Pokémon from attacking. However, benching either Pokémon ends this effect.
-
How do Metronome attacks like Meditate, Water Gun, Hydro Pump work? Do you copy the base damage or do the effect too?
Metronome copies the base damage, you would need additional energy on Clefairy/Clefable to do additional damage with those copied attacks.
-
When Mew uses Devolution Beam on one of your opponents Pokémon, do they have to wait a turn before evolving that Pokémon?
Yes, as long as the base Pokémon has been in play one turn your opponent can revolve his Pokémon.
-
Do you have to attack if you have enough energy cards attached to your Pokémon?
No, you always have the choice whether to attack on your turn or not.
-
Are you allowed to have as many DCE as you want in a deck like normal energy or only four like any other card?
Only 4 max, it is NOT a basic energy card (the only type you can have more than 4 of in your deck).
-
Clefairy Doll here . . . Situation: Hitmonchan vs. Mime. Hitmo has 2 plus powers attached. He jabs mime for 20. Is this considered a KO, or do plus powers add 20 to the attack itself (for 40) and so fail due to Mime’s wall?
Trainer card effects are added before Pokémon powers are figured, so the attack would do 40 total, which Mr. Mime’s Power would negate.
-
Does Fearow’s Agility attack block Kangaskahn’s fetch?
Actually it does not, Fearow’s agility says stops damage done to Fearow, and the Fetch just draws a card. This is the new ruling from R&D.
-
Can the switch card be used to retreat a paralyzed, confused, or sleeping Pokémon?
Yes, it can, the Trainer (you) plays NOT the Pokémon, a Trainer Card NOT the Pokémon, so it being Paralyzed, etc. does not stop a Trainer Card’s effects (generally).
-
Can you Raindance onto a Shifted Venamoth?
Yes you could do that.
-
If I use Charizard’s Energy Burn on some Grass energy could I still use Venusaur’s Energy Trans on them, and if Charizard is confused, paralyzed or asleep and he had some energy burned cards on him would they still be burned or would they change back?
Ok, 1st if the energy is changed to Fire energy then Venosaur can no longer Energy Trans them (they are no longer grass). If Charizard is paralyzed, etc. then the energy reverts (it also only changes to fire for that turn only).
-
The potion card says to remove “2 damage counters”, some people play with 10 and 30 point damage counters. SO: Can a regular potion take off two 30point damage counters or just 20 damage total? And can you place energy on a mysterious fossil?
Ok, whenever a card or effect or attack mentions damage counters, it is always assuming a counter to be equal to 10 points of damage.
-
Snorlax’s Pokémon power says that it cant be paralyzed, poisoned, confused, or put to sleep, so why does it say that the power stops working if its paralyzed, confused or put to sleep?
Well, say Muk was in play, all Pokémon Powers stop working. Snorlax gets confused, then Muk leaves play, and his power can’t turn back on until he is no longer confused.
-
What happens if the opponent benches the Pokémon after the fossil Magmar uses smokescreen?
Since that attack references the opponent’s Pokémon, if he benches it, the effect is removed.
-
If you have a defender on a Chansey, and you use double edge, is 20 of the damage to Chansey prevented?
Yes, it would be. Defender will protect your Pokémon from attacks form your opponent AND from your own attacks while it is in play.
-
Can I lay a double colorless energy and another energy down on the same turn?
No, you can only attach 1 energy card per turn.
-
Does Magmar’s smokescreen still works if I switch Pokémon?
Yes, it would. It references the opponent’s active Pokémon. If he benches THAT, the effect ends.
-
If you have used Scythers swords dance and your opponent uses a gust of wind on your next turn you retreat the active Pokémon and put Scyther back out does it do 30 or 60
If you retreat Scyther, of course, Swords Dance is canceled. So if he Gust of Winded, same thing.
-
If one of your Pokémon was poisoned, and a few turns later it is KO’d by the poison, does your opponent take a prize card although the poison KO’d the Pokémon and not your opponents Pokémon? And what if you’re own Pokémon knocks itself out?
Yes, he would still draw a prize card. Whenever a Pokémon in knocked out, the other player gets prize cards even if you knock out your own.
-
If my opponent has an active Ditto and I switch my Pokémon, is ditto my new Pokémon, or Ditto with 50hp?
Ditto always turns into a copy of whatever Pokémon he is facing when he is the active Pokémon (and not paralyzed, confused, or asleep).
-
How long does Porygon’s conversion attack (changing weakness) last?
It lasts until the Pokémon it was used on is benched.
-

If the opponent’s Pokémon is benched, the Conversion effect ends, it doesn’t matter if Porygon is.
-
Would Magmar’s Smokescreen stop Kangaskhan’s Fetch?
Yes, it would since Fetch is an attack.
-

-
If Mr. Mime is played against a Mewtwo with 20 damage on it, and uses Meditate, does it do ten, doubled, plus 20, or 10 plus 20, doubled?
You calculate the base damage first, then double it for weakness, so 60 points damage total.
-
Can you evolve a Pokémon right after Mew devolves it or do you have to wait a turn?"
If you devolve your own, you just did an attack and your turn is over. If you devolved the opponent’s Pokémon, he can evolve it on his turn.
-

-
Can you use energy transfer after Charizard has energy burned a grass energy?
No, since that energy was changed into fire energy (until the end of the turn), Venasaur can’t energy transfers it.
-
Ditto is out against (F) Magmar. Magmar uses smokescreen. Then the trainer with ditto uses gust of wind and puts a different Pokémon out does Ditto still have to flip to attack?
Yes, it does. The Smokescreen attack only references the defending Pokémon (in this case Ditto). Benching Magmar does NOT remove this effect (though benching the Ditto would).
-
I was playing a game at the Pokémon TCG League and the kid used a Ditto. He transformed into my Electabuzz. I eventually did 60 damage to it so the Ditto had 50 damage. I than retreated and sent in a Hitmonlee, shouldn’t it have been KO’d. I though
You’re right it should have, Ditto would have turned into the Hitmonlee (which only has 60 HP), since you had already done 60 to it, and Ditto would have been knocked out.
-
If I have Zubat up and retreat him, can I bring him back as active or do I have to bring up another benched Pokémon?
When you retreat a Pokémon, you are swapping it with another on the bench. So in this case, Zubat goes to the bench, and you bring up a different Pokémon from your bench.
-
Is it legal to have a deck with absolutely no Pokémon so that you mulligan and the opponent will draw cards till he looses?

-
Since Ditto has weakness, can it ever “choose” not to copy the other card?

-
If there is a Clefable and a ditto active, and the Clefable has one energy can he metronome, and do the Ditto’s minimize attack, which is really his own, without having the two energy required?

-
Do you apply weakness or resistance first?
Weakness and then resistance.
-
How much damage would metronome do when the damage of the attack copied is dependent on the amount of energy discarded (ex: Blanes Charizard’s fire breath
Ok. Here we go: the Metronome attack copies the attack and negates the cost (a.k.a. the energy cost of the attack). It also negates any payments to complete the attack like Charazards fire spin where it says you have to discard energy in order to do this attack. However on cards like Blastoise and any other card that has and added attack bonus for extra energy or attached cards you have to follow those rules as normal. Example if Clafable copied Hydro pump he would do 40 points of damage unless he had extra water energy on him, the same holds true for discarding for extra effects.
-
When using metronome who’s weakness and resistance is applied, Clefairy or the color of the copied attack?
Clefairy.
-
What exactly is the difference between “metronome” and Ditto’s “transform”?

-
Ok, if I was using Articuno and I did blizzard and flipped tails and it killed one of my benched (my opponent got his/her last prize), but at the same time I killed there last … what would happen?

-
Can a Ditto against a Venusaur use Energy Trans on any type of energy?

-
If you where Smokescreen-ed by a Fossil Magmar and retreated, would you still have to flip to attack?

-
Would you be so kind to explain to use what exactly Ditto copies with his Pokémon Power, Transform?
It just copies whatever is written on the opponent’s Active Pokémon card.
-
The trainer card “Energy Search” says nothing about showing the card to your opponent once you have found it in your deck. Shouldn’t you have to show it as part of “good-gamesmanship?”
The other player must be able to see what energy card you pull out of your deck. This is done to verify that they in fact pulled an energy card. If the card just said to pull out any card, then they would NOT have to show it.
-
I played against trainers who “hid” attached energy cards on benched Pokémon under the Pokémon card. Is this legal? (I don’t think it is). How you advise the player it’s not okay since the issue is not directly addressed in the rule? Thank you.
That is not legal. Any card that is in play must be visible. This is a standard card game rule and is done so you can make sure each other is playing correctly.
-
Hello, We get the hardest rules questions in our league; this is some Debatable question. I want to verify that Magmar’s Smokescreen wears off when the defending Pokémon (the one who got smoked) retreats and When Scyther does Sword Dance and gets gusted out and can’t do its 60 anymore next turn. Just want to verify it. Thanks.
You are correct. Whenever an effect of an attack references a particular Pokémon and it is benched, that effects ends. So even Scyther’s Sword Dance effect ends.

-
What is the penalty for drawing 2 cards instead of 1 at the beginning of your turn? Is it disqualification?
Hmmm, I’d recommend a charley horse. Seriously though, it would depend on whether it was a sanctioned tournament or not and whether it was intentional. You would probably get a warning the first time it happened. It would depend on the level of the tournament?
-
I know this one’s a bit odd, but how do you score damage if Porygon’s Conversion1 attack changes an opponent’s weakness to the same color as its resistance? Do you double first and then apply resistance or do you apply resistance 1st and then double?
Your first choice is correct, do weakness first, then resistance.
-
Is there a difference between “trading” your cards Such As Energy Retrieval and “discarding” your cards such as an Item Finder? Say that I only have one energy in my discard pile, and I use Energy Retrieval using Energy to trade, You only are able to retrieve the energy in your discard pile, not the card you traded. Right? Cause it would make sense about “trading”
Yes, that’s right.

Yup.
-
If Ditto copies a Venusaur and ditto has 4-fire energy on it can it use energy Trans and make the fire energy into plant energy because it’s copying a grass Pokémon?

No, Metronome says you do not have to anything else that is required in order to use the attack (like discarding).
-
If you metronome Haunter’s “Dream Eater” does the defending Pokémon have to be asleep or not?

If I use Clefables metronome copying Lapras’ water gun attack (Lapras having 3 water on him)…how much would the attack do?
The base damage is 10; it would do 10 more for each additional energy on CLEFABLE not on Lapras.
-
How would it go if it Metronomed Sword dance? Would next turn it will deal twice as much according to the Japanese Text? Or would it state in the US Text.
You would have to Metronome the Sword Dance the first turn and the Metronome the Slash the next and it would be doubled for your Clefable.
-
Wouldn’t there have to be extra water energy on Clefable to do extra damage with water gun?
Correct.
-
But on Lapras’ water gun it says does 10 additional damage on LAPRAS…so wouldn’t Metronome do 30 instead of 10?
Nope, read what I first stated, when you Metronome a Pokémon 's attack that references itself (as Lapras’s water gun does, you replace the self-reference with Clefable). So Water Gun will do 10 plus 10 more for each extra water energy on Clefable.
-
If the only card I have in my hand is Prof. Oak can I use it to draw 7 more cards?
Yes, you can discard a hand of zero cards.
-
When you use energy removal on a Pokémon with a DCE and other energy on it do you get to decide which energy card to remove or does your opponent?
The person playing the Energy Removal card gets to choose.
-
Can I use promo Mewtwo’s energy absorption onto a benched Mewtwo?
Nope, you can only use energy absorption on itself, not on other Mewtwo’s.
-
If your using a Geodude and you keep flipping heads beyond the point where your opponents Pokémon is Ko’d do you have to continue until you get tails, or can you just stop?
You could just stop.
-
Are any Pokémon resistant to grass?
We aren’t aware of any.
-
If Ditto copies Scythers swords dance attack, and on my opponents turn, he benches Scyther and brings up his other Scyther, on my turn, would swords dance be active?
Yes, it would still be active, there is no mid point where Ditto would have reverted to himself in this case, he stayed a Scyther and the Swords Dance was referencing himself.
-
Let’s say Clefable Metronomes Scyther’s Sword Dance, then Scyther retreated for a. Machop. Next turn, would Clefable’s Metronoming of a Machop’s Low Kick deal 20 or 40 damage?
No.
-
In your judgement, how many basic Pokémon should be in a deck?
I would say about 16.
-
If someone made up a set of like say 68 new cards and sent them to you (with what all the cards say exactly), would they be considered?
Sorry, we don’t design the Pokémon cards here. You’d have to send them to the makers of the Pokémon card game in Japan.
-
If a Ditto copy Swords Dance which says his SLASH does 60, could it copy Charmeleon’s for 60?
No, the Swords Dance refers to Scyther’ s Slash.
-
Can I evolve Squirtle into Blastoise with Pokebreeder when Aerodactyl is in play?
No, check out Pokémon Breeder. It says you can only use it when you could evolve that Pokémon anyway.
-
Who would win in a fight Ekans or Koffing?
There’s a lot that could change the outcome in that match-up.
-
Would Plus Power be doubled if the defending Pokémon had a weakness? Or added after the attacks damage is doubled?
No, the effects of Plus Power are applied after Weakness ands Resistance.
-
Since I am relatively new to this, what would you consider the most powerful card in the game?
Well, that is really an opinion question, many jump at Charizard but I personally prefer Kanghaskan. Professor Oak is what many of my compadsres are yelling at me to tell you.
-
When Clefable metronomes Moltres’ wildfire, what are the rules? Is it true you can burn the opponent’s whole deck automatically?
No, that’s true. When you Metronome Wildfire, its effect would discard 1 card from the other guys deck for every fire energy you discarded from CLEFABLE in this case.
-
What Basic Pokémon you most often use in your game (the first turn)(your own recommendation)
Past suggest Hitmonchan and Scyther. Any Pokémon that only needs 1energy for an attack could be used on your first turn to attack.
-
Does Persian’s pounce attack’s -10 accumulate such that it can ward off any attacks, even from Charazard?
No, they don’t accumulate.
-
Drowzee’s pound attack requires a colorless energy, even though it’s psychic, if I attach a grass energy, does the resistance to psychic still apply?
Yes, it does.
-
Is there a combination of energy types that you would recommend in a deck?
Well, that’s up to you, the grass/psychic combo is pretty tough though.
-
What’s the ruling of the Dark Pokemon?
What do you mean? You can have alternate named Pokémon in your deck with plain ones, so you could have 4 Weedles and 4 Dark Weedles in the same deck.
-
Why does Rhydon have Weakness to Grass?
Probably for game balance purposes. And the fact that he is afraid of the mighty WEEDLE!
-
Does a Buzzap’d Electrode providing Green Energy count as a Green (not Basic) Energy card since it counts as an Energy Card?
Well technically, it just counts as an energy card that provides (in this case) 2 green energy.
-
Are energy on Ditto counted as whatever type needed for anything, or just for purposes of meeting attack requirements? For example, can any energy on Ditto be used to discard cards with Moltres’ Wildfire, or beef up a Water Gun?
You can treat energy attached to Ditto as any type for whatever reasons as long as Ditto isn’t asleep, confused, or paralyzed.
-
Does a full heal trainer remove all damage also, it is not mentioned on the card? If not, how can the Pokémon have gotten fully healed?
No, it heals effects for attacks like asleep, confusion, paralysis, or poisoned.
-
Say Ditto has had its weakness changed by Porygon. Porygon retreats for another Pokémon, which Ditto now copies. Does Ditto retain the changed weakness as a result of Porygon’s attack, or does it now switch to the new Pokémon being copied?
It would have the weakness of the Pokémon it copied. If it changed back to Ditto (and wasn’t benched or scooped up) then it would have the Poygon changed weakness.
-
Can Clefairy dolls evolve into Clefable?
No they can’t.
-
How many energies do u think should be in a deck?
Depends on the style of your deck. How many energy types you are playing with, trainer cards, etc. Anywhere from 24-34 is a good start (though 30 are a good starting value).
-
So a Buzzap’d Electrode providing Green Energy couldn’t be Energy Trans’d by Venusaur because the card is not explicitly named ``Green Energy’’ even though its considered an Energy Card?
Correct.
-
Do Clefairy dolls and mysterious fossil count when counting bench numbers for Wigglytuffs “do the wave”?
Yes they would, they count as basic Pokémon when in play.
-
Regarding Ditto and Smokescreen: Ditto is smoke screened by Magmar, who then retreats for, say, a Weedle. Would Ditto still have to flip, or does the act of “dittoing” a new Pokémon remove the effect?
Since Ditto is still active (not benched or evolved) the Smokecsreen would still effect him, regardless of him transforming.
-
In start game, I have only 1 basic Pokémon but I don’t like that. Can I mulligan like Magic the Gathering?
Not in the official rules (or in league or tournament play), no. In a friendly game, that would be up to you and your opponent.
-
Is Chansey good? It does 80 HP to itself.
Well that is an opinion question. 120 HP for a basic Pokémon is a lot, and since it is colorless you can use any type of energy to pay for its attacks. It would have to have some sort of drawback or it would be too powerful otherwise.
-
Does plus power trainer add damage to a failed attack when confused?
No, Pluspower reads that if the attack does damage to the DEFENDING Pokémon then pluspower adds 10 to the final amount. A confused attack against itself is not against the defending Pokémon.
-
Okay, so let me get this straight – Magmar’s “effect of an attack” is not cancelled by Ditto assuming a new Identity, but Porygon’s “effect of an attack” Conversion is. Is it because Porygon’s is actually changing an actual element of a card, but Smokescreen is not? (Trying to figure out the difference so I can extrapolate similar situations in the future if need be).
Ok, that’s somewhat true but keep in mind that Ditto’s Transform has it change into a complete copy of the other active Pokémon. In your example, Ditto would have been a copy of Porygon, so it actually wouldn’t have changed Ditto’s weakness anyway, just Ditto as Porygon’s weakness.
-
Porygon use conversion 1 change Pidgey weakness and he retreats or evolves, Pidgey still change or not?
If you mean Pidgey evolves or retreats then the effect is gone. If you mean Porygon retreating, as long as Pidgey was still the active Pokémon, the effect would still be there.
-
Active = Scyther. I also have a Scyther on the bench. Opponent uses Weedle to poison my Scyther. My turn. Can I retreat active Scyther and bring up benched Scyther, then retreat and bring up the original Scyther, thus removing the poison?
Yes you could.
-
If you have a double colorless on a Pokémon, and its retreat cost is 1 energy what would u do?
You would have to discard the double colorless energy if that’s the only energy you had available and you wanted to retreat that Pokémon.
-
Can I remove 2 energy in different Pokémon with super energy removal?
No, both energies must be removed from the same Pokémon.
-
What moves do Arodactel know?
He has the Wing Attack for 30 damage and a new Pokémon Power.
-
How long does Mew’s attack devolution last? I don’t think it would make sense to use it only to have your opponent turn around and evolve it again.
That’s what it is.
-
When I use a computer search do I have to show the card a searched for to my opponent?
No.
-
If someone puts ditto out at the beginning of a game and starts second, will Ditto use transform on its opponent’s turn?
Yes.
-
Does Venomoth’s shift power affect its weakness/resistance?
It stays the same, course if you changed him to Fire and he was confused and hit himself, Then no it doesn’t
-
Hi, I have a question, If I have a fossil Hunter in my bench and its attack there, does the transparency work in the bench too?
Sure it would.
-
If Ditto is poisoned and his opponent evolves, does Ditto get to remove the poison just as if it had evolved itself?
Nope.
-
If the player and/or opponent’s active Pokémon is asleep confused, or paralyzed does SWITCH and/or GUST of WIND still work?
Yes it does, playing Trainer cards is what the trainer is doing, NOT the Pokémon (though it effects the Pokémon).
-
Does Ditto lose effects if I switch a Pokémon(ex. poison)
If you aren’t switching Ditto, then no.
-
I heard that in order for Chansy or Clefairy to Metronome Moltres’s Wildfire you need to discard the energy off of Clefairy/fable still, even through Metronome says not to discard energy. Why?
Ahhh, metronome says you do not have to discard energy that is REQUIRED to do in attack, the EFFECT of the Wildfire requires you to discard energy, not the attack.
-
Does Chansey take poison damage if scrunch works?
Yes, Scrunch says it only prevents damage, all other effects of attacks still happen.
-
Can I start a game using a Clefairy Doll or a mysterious fossil as my basic Pokémon?
Yes but only if you have another basic Pokémon (not one of them in your starting hand). They count as trainer cards in your hand and you must have 1 basic in your hand to start.
-
If I have two Dodrio on my bench, does that mean I can use it’s Pokemon power and deduct the retreat cost by two instead of one?
Yes, you could.
-
If an Areodactyl is in play, can another one be “evolved” from a mysterious fossil?
No, as long as that first Aerodactyl isn’t paralyzed, asleep, or confused, then no Pokémon can evolve.
-
What would be a good deck building idea with water cards?
Hmm, there are many variants on the Rain Dance deck, check out the Pojo or Pokegym for good fan deck ideas.
-
Do you know a good type of Pokémon to correspond with water in a deck?
Hmm, Blastoise, Lapras, Articuno, some others like Seel/Dewgong or Magickarp/Gyrados.
-
When your opponent has Moltres and you use metronome for wildfire how would you go about that
Well, you only need to pay 1 colorless to Metronome the Wildfire but it won’t do anything unless you pay the normal EFFEECT cost of discarding an energy card for each card you want the opponent to discard.
-
If I have a fossil Haunter on the bench and a Magnaton uses self-destruct and I flip a head dose that make the self-destruct fail
No, it would just prevent any damage from happening to Haunter.
-
If I have 2 in play Fossil Haunters (one active and one benched) and my opponent uses a Magneton’s self Destruct would I flip twice for Transparency (once for my active haunter and another for my benched)?
Yes you could flip for each one to see if damage to that particular Haunter is prevented.
-
If my opponent had 3 cards left in his deck and I used wildfire to discard the three cards and on his/her next turn do I win.
Yup, you would, if someone cannot draw a card at the start of their turn like they are supposed to, they lose.
-
Does poison work like this Smog (heads)-20 damage, End of your turn-10 poison damage, End of opponents turn-10 poison damage and so on.
Correct.
-
Charizard has 2 dice on it. I do fire spin. I discard both DCE right?
Fire Spin requires that 2 Energy “cards” be discarded as a cost. One Double Colorless Energy card only counts as 1 card toward this cost (another Energy “card”).
-
I have a Lickitung out and my opponent a Ditto…ditto has 6 damage on it…I do confuse ray successfully. Will Ditto go back to Ditto?
Yes it would and then it would be knocked out (ditto has 50 hp).
-
If I’m playing against someone and they do other things before drawing their card and remember to do it after they give an energy or attack, are they still aloud to draw a card or are they not aloud?
Technically drawing a card is the first thing you do, period. They broke the rules and “could” be warned if in a tournament.
-
Moltres’ Wildfire says you MAY discard, as opposed to all other similar Fire attacks, which REQUIRE you to discard. In other words, it sounds like discarding with Wildfire is not a REQUIREMENT to use the attack, but an effect OF the attack. If that is so, could you do the Wildfire attack without discarding any cards (which, understandably, would have no effect)?
Yes you could.
-
Is MP Mewtwo the same as B Mewtwo or can u have 4 of both in your deck?
They are the same in that they have the same name, only 4 Mewtwo’s max in a deck.
-
When using super potion, is it correct that I must remove the energy card from the same Pokémon that I am removing damage counters?
Yes, that is correct
-
When using Lapras’ water gun, what is the most damage I can do? The card says I can add 20 damage, which means (adding 20 to 10) I can do 30 damage. Is this correct?
Correct. 30 max for Lapras’s Watergun.
-
If Moltres is Confused, do you discard any cards for Wildfire’s effect BEFORE the coin flip to attack under Confusion (in the ‘satisfy any requirements in order to use this attack’ step) or AFTER the coin flip (in the ‘do any additional effects of the attack’ step)?
You must discard the energy when you do the attack BEFORE you flip for confusion.
-
If Ditto is copying Arcanine, and wishes to do the Flamethrower attack, can Ditto discard ANY color energy to satisfy the ‘discard one Fire Energy’ requirement of the attack, or must he discard only ACTUAL Fire energy attached to him?
You could discard any energy in this case (Ditto’s transform power allows energy attached to Ditto to be any type).
-
Similarly, if Ditto is copying Moltres, and wishes to do the Wildfire attack, can Ditto discard any number of ANY color energy to create the deck-depletion effect, or must he discard only ACTUAL Fire energy attached to him? Or does he need to discard any on him at all?
He needs to discard energy for the effect of the attack BUT it can be energy of any type.
-
Since Ditto allows Energy attached to Ditto to be of any type, can you use Venusaur’s Energy Trans power to Trans a Buzzap’d Electrode attached to Ditto so that it is now attached to another Pokémon by treating it as Green Energy?
Yes you could.
-
When Ditto goes from copying a particular Pokémon to copying another (when the Defending Pokémon retreats, for example) do either status effects (such as poison or sleep) or attack-based effects (such as Magmar’s Smokescreen or Porygon’s Conversion) disappear as a result?
No they don’t.
-
In Clefairy’s Metronome is used on Molter’s wildfire does he have to discard.
Yes you do if you want the attack to have any effect. Metronome says to ignore effects or discards that are needed IN ORDER TO DO THE ATTACK, such as discarding 2 fire energy to use Charizard’s Fire Spin, Moltres’s Wildfire says you MAY discard any number of fire energy for increasing the effect of the attack, NOT to do it.
-
Ditto says “you may treat any Energy attached to Ditto as Energy of any type.” Does that mean that if Ditto is copying Venusaur, he could Energy Trans, say, a DCE from himself to a Grass Pokémon? Or does it mean the Energy can be treated as needed ONLY for the purposes of satisfying requirements to use an attack? Ditto says “you may treat any Energy attached to Ditto as Energy of any type.” Does that mean that if Ditto is copying Venusaur, he could Energy Trans, say, a DCE from himself to a Grass Pokémon? Or does it mean the Energy can be treated ONLY for the purposes of satisfying attack REQUIREMENTS?
It doesn’t state that the energy can only be treated for purposes of satisfying attack requirements so don’t assume that.
-
Since you can only attach one basic energy card per turn, can you attach (1 of your 4) double white energy too because it’s not a basic energy card?
The Rules State you can attach one energy card per turn, it does NOT state basic energy, so the DCE would count as your one energy card per turn, yes.
-
The WB Movie Promo Mewtwo has Energy Absorption as one of its attacks do you have to attach the 2 Energy cards to the active Mewtwo or can it be a Mewtwo on your bench?
For Energy Absorption, the 2 energy cards can only be attached to THIS Mewtwo, not to another one.
-
Does poison still affect a Pokémon if it is asleep?
Yes it does.
-
If a Pokémon is confused, once u discard the energies to heal it, but fail, are the energies still discarded?
Do you mean removing the energy to use a super potion? If so, confusion does NOT effect this.
-
If Charizard Firespins a Grass Energy Card attached to him so that it is now a Grass Energy Card providing Fire Energy, can Venusaur’s Energy Trans Power still move it to another Pokémon, since it still is technically a “Grass Energy Card”?
Charizard using Energy Burn turns attached energy into FIRE energy until the end of the turn. Grass energy effected by this would NOT count as grass energy until after the turn, and it turns back.
-
If you use energy on your turn does that mean when it comes time to attack you can not buzzap Electrode due to the one energy rule?
No that is not true, Buzzaping electrode changes electrode into an energy card, this does NOT count as attaching (taking an energy card from your hand) an energy to a Pokémon.
-
Regarding the Charizard fire spin question - so, since Pokémon powers are always affective, the grass energy on Charizard will always be fire energy, therefore not allowing Venasaur to energy trans it, right?
Correct, if you used Charizard’s Energy Burn and turned grass energy into fire energy (until the end of the turn) it could NOT be Energy Transferred since it is no longer grass energy.
-
So, since you can Energy Trans energy off of Ditto if he wants to use it as Grass Energy, could you theoretically Energy Trans a Fire Energy Card from a Ditto using it as Grass Energy onto an Arcanine, at which point it now reverts to it’s original Fire Energy?
Yes you could (geez you are making me think a lot today!).
-
Can Defender prevent the 20 damage during your turn (like failed attack when confused) and also prevent 20 damage during opponent’s attack, for a total of 40 damage prevented?
Yes it could.
-
Would Defender prevent damage caused by Machamp’s Strike Back Pokémon Power? If it doesn’t, is it because that damage is a secondary effect, and not the direct result of an Attack?
It would not. Defender protects against damage done by attacks not by Pokémon Powers like Machamp’s Strike Back.
-
If I recall correctly (?), neither Clefairy Doll nor Devolution Spray made it into Base Set 2. If so, can you tell me why these cards have been taken out of print?
Because we wanted more Pokémon made into Base Set 2, some trainer cards didn’t make it. Those two were not as popular so they didn’t make the cut.
-
Can you Metronome an attack that does not do any damage (such as Kangaskhan’s Fetch attack)?
You could Metronome any attack, regardless of whether it does damage or not.
-
If Clefable can use Metronome, does it have to discard while it metronomes attacks that need to discard, such as Charizard’s Fire Spin?
If the discarding is required like for Fire Spin you do NOT, if it is optional like Moltres’s Wildfire, then you DO.
-
If your opponent uses Kangaskhan’s Fetch attack, would you be able to use Pidgeotto’s Mirror Move to mimic it on your next turn? I imagine you would not be able to since the attack doesn’t really ``effect’’ Pidgeotto, though I could be wrong.
Nothing happened to Pidgeotto so nothing would happen if Pidgeotto tried to use Mirror Move.
-
If Clefable Metronomes Charizard’s Fire Spin, but Clefable has only one energy attached, Clefable can’t use that attack, right?
Wrong, Clefable can use Metronome.
-
If an active Pokémon had a retreat cost of 1 energy, and u used Dodrio’s Pokémon power: retreat aid, would that mean it retreats for free?
Yes it would. Having multiple Dodrios is cumulative.
-
Then in the same understanding as Dodrio, would powers that do a similar effect be cumulative?
Dodrio’s is the only one that comes to mind right now that works this way, do you have another example?
-
If Scyther does Swords Dance, and on the next turn goes briefly to the bench (to end poison) and becomes active the same turn, can Scyther Slash for 60, or does benching end the Swords Dance effect.
Yeah, that’s a slight bummer, but you can’t have everything.
-
Can I place Mysterious Fossil on my bench? Can I attach defender on it?
Yes.
-
If Syther uses swords dance then I use gust of wind?
If Scyther hits the bench (if you gusted it) then it loses the Swords Dance effect.
-
Is ditto’s Pokémon power always in effect?
Yes, when he is an active Pokémon and not confused, paralyzed, or asleep.
-
Can you use Alakazams Pokémon power more than once during 1 turn? If so, wouldn’t it be easy to win?
Yes you could and no not really. Since you move the damage to other Pokémon you control, eventually all of your Pokémon will be full of damage.
-
What happens if a Ditto goes against an M fossil, can the Ditto be thrown away do you get a prize if you kill it
A Ditto that Transforms into a Fossil or a Clefairy Doll retains the text, so no prize will be given when it’s knocked out.
-
What Pokémon’s Pokémon power must be announced to be used?
Many of them, read each power, they are all different.
-
If fossil Zapdos has 70 damage and he uses his attack against a full bench, flips a coin and its tails, is he immediately knocked out or can he still finish his attack?
Damage isn’t given to Pokémon until the attack is finished being calculated (in this case, coins being flipped).
-
Can Alakazam’s power work on itself?
Yes it could.
-
So Zapdos can finish his attack and can receive more damage than necessary?
Yes, you calculate out the damage an attack does and then check effects like Trainer cards, weakness, and resistance BEFORE you actually apply the damage.
-
A mysterious fossil and a Clefairy doll don’t count as basic Pokémon in my opening hand unless I have another basic Pokémon right
Correct, they are Trainer cards when in your hand.
-
Is there a great way to stop from decking yourself if you are just about to run out of cards?
Well, if you had Lass and other trainer cards in your hand that would get a few more cards into your deck but.
-
When I use Energy Removal, do I get to choose which?
Yes you do.
-
How does Charizard’s Pokémon power work?
Energy Burn As often as you like during your turn (before your attack), you may turn all Energy attached to Charizard into Energy for the rest of the turn. This power can’t be used if Charizard is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed.
-
If I have super potion and no energy attached to a Pokémon can I use it?
No you couldn’t.
-
How does devolution beam WORK?(MEW)
You pick a Pokémon (yours or your opponent’s) and return the highest stage of evolution that was out on that Pokémon back to the owner’s hand. This would remove poison, paralysis, asleep, confusion, or any effects of attacks (like smokescreen) from that Pokémon. Damage would stay, of course.
-
Do you think that using Haunter (fossil) to repeatedly put your opponent to sleep so you can build your bench is being cheesy?
Hey, if it works for you then use it. Your opponent should have some switch cards in his deck to combat that sort of thing.
-
FOR Electrode’s attack - chain lightning, DOES ALL COLORLESS TYPE POKÉMON COUNT AS THE SAME TYPE?
They are all colorless BUT chain lightning does NOT have its secondary effect if the defending Pokémon is colorless.
-
Why do u like rain dance? It only works on water types. So why?
A deck made up of only water energy and water Pokémon with Blastoises can get Pokémon like Blastoise, Lapras, and Articuno full of water energy fast (through it Professor Oak, Item Search, etc). This makes for a VERY fast deck.
-
I asked the question about the Pokémon Powers. Do you mean that even though that it is “always on” I have to announce it? And If I don’t announce it, does the power not work, or what?
No, read each power, if always on, you don’t have to announce it. If it says you MAY use it, then you must announce it.
-
FOR Kangaskhan’s Comet Punch, IF I FILP FOUR TAILS, DOES THAT MEAN THE ATTACK DOES NOTHING?
Correct.
-
I like Ditto is he/she a good Pokémon to use?
Sure though he can be a bit complicated to play.
-
Can I try and retreat after failed attempts because of confusion…as long as I pay the retreat cost?
Nope, as stated in the rulebooks, if you fail retreating (due to confusion) you cannot try and retreat that Pokémon again that turn.
-
Buzzap reads: “…choose a type of Energy. Electrode is now an Energy card…that provides 2 Energy of that type.” However, if you have chosen Grass, you still can’t Energy Trans Electrode. Ditto reads: “…you may treat any Energy attached to Ditto as Energy of any type.” As it says Energy, and not Energy cards, I would think that Ditto changes the type of Energy an Energy card provides. However, you can Energy Trans an Electrode that’s on Ditto by treating it as Grass Energy. If the type of Energy provided by an Energy card doesn’t determine its type, how is this possible? Does Ditto change the Energy type of the card as well as the type of Energy provided, or does changing the Energy provided change the Energy card type, or what? Or is Electrode just an aberration that basically counts as a Colorless type Energy card providing 2 Colored Energy because the text can be taken to mean that Electrode is explicitly “typing” itself to have no Energy type (as a card)?
Ok, long question and we needed to check on it. Yes, you could NOT energy trans a buzzaped electrode even if grass was selected because it is NOT a grass energy card, but an energy card that provides 2 (in this case grass) energy. Ditto says you may treat any Energy attached to Ditto as Energy of any type, so if this buzzaped Electrode was on Ditto, then you COULD change it to Grass Energy for that turn (that provides 2 grass energy) and then you COULD energy trans it…
-
Does Magmar’s smokescreen stops anything from fetch to energy absorption to firespin?
Yes it does.
-
Can I remove any energy card with energy removal…like Buzzaped electrode?
Yes you could. Double Colorless energy (and a Buzzaped Electrode) are Energy cards and therefore may be discarded with Energy Removal.
-
Does agility stop fetch, stretch kick, and wildfire?
No, the Agility only stops effects of attacks DONE to Rapidash.
-
On the trainer computer search, do you have to show the card you choose from your deck?
No you don’t, since it only mentions getting a card. If it stated a specific type (like trainer or Pokémon) then you would have to show it to verify the correct choice.
-
If I attach a defender to Arcanine and do takedown…would it reduce the damage down to 10?
Yes, Arcanine would only do 10 to itself from the Takedown attack in this case.
-
When out of basics, do you get to draw a card for your turn?
Not sure what you mean. You always draw a card at the start of your turn, if you are out of cards and can’t do this draw, you lose.
-
If I attach a defender to Electabuzz and do thunder punch, flipping tails…I take 10 damage…and my opponent does 20 damage next turn, would the damage be reduced any?
Why would you take 10 damage? Thunder punch does 10 damage to your opponent. If his attack to you did 20, Defender would reduce it to zero.
-
Can I use Energy Retrieval or Attacks (like Energy Absorption) to retrieve my Buzzapped Electrode (the card never says when it stops being an energy card)?
No you couldn’t. When a card hits the discard pile it always reverts to its basic form (like a Mysterious Fossil would be a Trainer Card, not a basic Pokémon).
-
What is the official ruling for smokescreen attack I need to know because I judge tourneys and don’t know what to call?
If the opponent tries to do ANY attack next turn (whether it does damage to Magmar or it’s something like Fetch: Draw a Card), they must flip a coin. If it comes up tails, that attack does. If that player benches or evolves the Pokémon affected by the Smokescreen though, the effect ends (since it is referencing the Defending Pokémon).
-
If my Chansey uses Double-Edge on a Haunter and flips heads for Transparency would I do 80 damage to my Chansey and none to him?
Yes, a successful use of Transparency only prevents the effects of attacks on to Haunter, not to the attacking Pokémon itself.
-
If Spearow is on the bench and takes 30 damage from promo Mewtwo’s Telekinesis attack, and then you make Spearow active, can you do Mirror Move for 30? Or does Mirror Move only apply to damage taken while active?
Mirror Move would only apply to damage taken while Spearow was active.
-
Can Item Finder be used to find itself? (With MP Mewtwo as active, play Item Finder to discard 2 energy, then get the Item Finder back?)
Nope, the order for training cards is, pay the cost, do the effect, THEN discard that Trainer Card.
-
On previous rulings: This one may have been cleared up in a Chat for which I don’t have a transcript. But it was said that when Charizard Energy Burns, says, all the Grass Energy attached to him into Fire Energy, that if he were to then become Confused, etc., then the Energy would revert back to Grass. How does that make sense when all the Power does is change Energy from its original type to Fire, and makes no reference to this being a “maintained” power (in fact, it clearly states the effect remains on the Energy “until end of turn”). Whether or not the Power is functioning doesn’t seem like it would have any bearing on previous uses of said Power (any more than evolving Grimer into Fossil Muk will retroactively remove the damage done by Machamp Strikes Back last turn).
Umm, who said the energy would revert? If it were already changed, it would stay that way until the end of the turn. BTW, isn’t Pokémon supposed to be a fun and simple game? (Getting ready to duck flames).
-
How many water energies can you put down in one turn using “rain dance”?
As many as you have in your hand (then play your Professor Oak and get more and do it again!).
-
On previous rulings: It was said that if Moltres is Confused, you must discard any Fire Energy attached to Moltres you wish to use to activate Wildfire before you flip for Confusion during your attack. However, this discarding of Fire Energy isn’t a requirement for you to use the attack (step c in attack precedence), only an optional step for it to actually do anything. It also isn’t an effect (step d). So how come it doesn’t count as “do whatever the attack says” (step f), which comes after Confusion (step e). Is this because it (the Energy discard) counts as a “choice” (step b), even though it doesn’t specifically say “choose”? Usage of the word “may” seems to imply making a choice, and as such may be the cause for confusion over this Confusing question.
There is no TIMING in Pokémon. You are trying WAY too hard to make a simple game had. The attack states, You may discard any number of Energy cards attached to Moltres, when you use this attack. You use the attack (i.e. perform it) BEFORE confusion is rolled for. As simple as that.
-
If a Ditto copied a sleeping Muk, Ditto would copy Toxic Gas, then disable it’s own power, becoming Ditto, then Muk, then Ditto, then Muk. What would eventually happen?
I quote from the Fossil FAQ: Q: What happens if Ditto copies a Confused Muk (so that when Ditto copies Muk’s Pokémon Power: Toxic Gas, it turns off its own Pokémon Power: Whoops! The end result is that Ditto is Ditto.
-
If a Haunter’s Transparency blocked a Chansey’s double-edge, would Chansey still deal itself 80?
Yes, the effects of Transparency only prevents effects of an attack done to Haunter (Fossil)
-
Although it may seem pointless, can you play Bill with no cards in your deck, or Professor Oak? Could you play Computer Search with no cards in your deck? Can you use Super Energy Removal and choose to discard 0 energies of your opponent’s?
Yes, it seems pointless, but you can.
-
If my opponent switches Pokémon is smokescreen still in effect?
Did you do the Smokescreen to your opponent? Then no, the Smokescreen effect will end.
-
If you us promo Pikachu’s Recharge and have no lightning energy in your deck, do you just not do anything, or show your opponent your cards in your deck and do anything? Would you be allowed to look through your deck but not attach a lightning energy?
You would just look though you deck and not attach a lightning energy. If you use the attack and you have a lightning energy, you have to attach it to Pikachu.
-
If a Ditto was copying a Charmander, and Ditto used ember, the energy it must discard must be a FIRE ENERGY CARD, correct?
Remember you may treat any energy attached to Ditto as energy of any type when Ditto’s Transform Power is in effect.
-
Say I attach a defender to Electabuzz, I use thunderpunch and I take 10 damage because of tails…and defender stops that. Then my opponent deals 20 damage to me…would defender block any of the damage my opponent did?
To your Pokémon you mean? The Defender will reduce damage done by attacks to that Pokémon by 20. Since these are separate attacks, 20 would reduce both.
-
On question #97: Sorry, Pat, I wanted to make Mike get this one, but. Mike said there’s no “timing” in Pokémon, yet in Rulebook V.3 it specifically states in what order you do your attack. If the discard for Moltres’ Wildfire isn’t considered a choice (step b), then it would seem to fall under step f (do whatever the attack says), which is after the Confusion flip (step e). So, is discard part of step b? Any help? Please?
OK, hold off on the coffee man…just kidding’. You’re reading steps where there are none. You either attack with you’re confused Moltres or you do not. Any choices that must be made for the attack (like discarding energy cards for Wildfire) must be made when you choose to attack. Does that help you out?
-
If Venomoth used Shift, would the type it changed to be removed if it retreated? What if a Devolution Spray was played on it?
Retreating would not remove the effects of Shift, though a Devolution Spray would because Venomoth is no longer Venomoth.
-
Some players hide their energy directly beneath their Pokémon, so you can’t see what energy they have. Is this legal?
Nope, all cards in play need to be visible.
-
If you have a Pokémon with 10 HP left that is poisoned, and your opponent have no cards in your deck with one prize left, then you end your turn, is it Sudden Death or do you lose? (You have a Pokémon on your bench.) Why?
At the end of the turn your Pokémon takes the 10 points damage from Poison. It’s knocked out; he takes his last prize and wins.
-
In your opponent has no basic Pokémon, do you have to put your active and benched Pokémon down before drawing your card? Can you bench more Pokémon and/or change your active after you draw your extra cards? Also, since you can draw UP to 2 extra cards, do you have to decide how many you draw, then draw, or can you draw one, then decide whether or not you want to draw your 2nd?
You can draw your two cards before you place your Pokémon. You do have to announce in advance how many you will draw BEFORE you draw them.
-
When a Ditto use’s A Farfetch’d’s Leek Slap, can it be used again with Ditto, or no? (I guess no.)
It could not, Ditto is an exact copy of Farfetch’d and has his same limitations as well. Now, if you benched Ditto and then brought him back up then you could use it again as he is in effect, a new Farfetch’d.
-
Can you retrieve the basic energy card you discarded to play energy retrieval with energy retrieval? (My guess. yes)
No you can’t. Its says to TRADE 1 card from your hand for up to 2 basic energy from your discard pile. That means you exchange the one card from your hand for those cards from your pile.
-
I play a fossil against a ditto with damage do I get a prize?
Sure, Ditto would turn into the Fossil and then get knocked out.
-
If a Clefairy Metronome’s a Scyther’s Sword Dance, and next turn uses Slash, will it do 30 or 60? What if Scyther retreated and came back out after you Swords Danced? What if, on your turn, you retreated Clefable, and brought it back out?
On your first question, yes it would do 60. On your second question, if Clefable is benched it would lose the Swords Dance effect.
-
What would be the best Pokémon to put in lightning deck?
One of our guys says the base set Electabuzz, best basic electric Pokémon.
-
I had a question about Clefairy/fable’s metronome attack. If you copied Sword Dance one round and then Slash the next is it 30 or 60 damage?
-
-
If ditto is poisoned and my opponent evolves…will ditto no longer be poisoned since he “evolved”?
He would still be poisoned. Ditto did not evolve; he transforms into a copy of the evolved Pokémon.
-
About question number 133 though, about Ditto being able to discard any energy when copying Charmander’s ember. Ditto copies energy, not energy cards. Charmander’s Ember attacks clearly says “Discard one Fire Energy Card attached to Charmander in order to use this attack.” Ditto cannot use Rain Dance when copying Blastoise unless what it attaches is a WATER ENERGY CARD. So could we review the question?
Energy Requirements include discarding, so any color energy may be used for discards. Also, Blastoise’s Rain Dance is referring to cards in your hand, so of COURSE Ditto’s energy change ability does not work with that.
-
What is the best combo in your opinion? In TCG that is.
Alakazam and Slowbro, or Blastoise and water energy, Weedle and anything, of course.
-
If you have 1 card in your hand and it is a computer search can you use it?
No you can’t.
-
Can you use Pokémon trader if you have no Pokémon in your hand?
No, it says to TRADE, meaning you must have another card (you should know that Ash).
-
Can you use Maintenance if it is the only card in your hand?
Nope.
-
If Clefariy/Fable’s Metronome is used to copy Porygon’s conversion 2 and changes its own resistance… Does this effect still apply when benched and/or de-evolved?
Nope.
-
Does Venomoth’s Shift last until you start your next turn, or until you change it?
Until you change it (or it is benched or devolved).
-
Can I use energy retrieval if it is the only card in my hand?
Nope.
-
Can I use Super Energy Removal if none of my Pokémon have energy cards attached to them?
Nope.
-
Where can you take the water energy cards from for Blastoise’s rain dance?
From your hand.
-
How do you use Poliwhirl’s doubleslap?
You flip 2 coins, for each heads that comes up, the attack does 30 damage, so no heads = no damage, 1 heads = 30 damage, 2 heads = 60 damage.
-
HERE. This one CAN happen, your opponent’s Pokémon is asleep and poisoned, your Pokémon is poisoned. You end your turn. After you end your turn, what happens first, then second, then last?
They are simultaneous effects.
-
Master, you said I couldn’t retrieve the same energy I discarded to play Energy Retrieval with it, because it says TRADE. Now with Pokémon Trader, couldn’t you just take your Pokémon that you were going to put in? I read somewhere else you COULD retrieve the discarded energy. And are you sure Ditto VS Charmander, Ditto wouldn’t have to discard a fire energy when using Ember, since it says Energy CARD, not energy?
Nope. Trading means swapping a card from your hand for the card the Trainer card is asking you for. You are getting confused with Item Finder where you CAN bring back a card discarded for the cost of a Trainer.
-
My opponent has a Chancey and successfully used Scrunch. Can I use 2 Gust of Winds and send Chancey backs and do damage?
Yes you could.
-
So everyone’s asking about the ditto/fossil thing, if ditto changes into a myst. Fossil and gets KO’d do you get a prize? (Because it is now fossil.)
As far as we know (and we will check with R&D later) he is a copy and would count BUT we will verify this one for you. Check back next week.
-
I still don’t understand why DITTO can discard any energy with Charmander’s Ember attack. Can you explain the differences between this and Energy Trans and Rain Dance?
What don’t you understand? Ditto can count energy on it as any type (i.e. Fire energy can count as Grass Energy) and be Energy Trans’ed. Rain Dance says take WATER energy from your HAND, Ditto has no effect on your hand!
-
If Seadra used agility and flipped heads on the coin flip, could Fearow use agility the next turn?
Yes he could though the 20 damage would be prevented.
-
Does Venomoth’s weakness stay Fire even when he uses shift?
Yes it does.
-
Earlier you said if a Venomoth is benched the type it Shifted to stay, now you say it disappears! What happens to Venomoth’s Shifted type when it is benched?
I made a mistake with the Fetched reference, my apologies. If it is devolved it would lose it but not if it is benched.
-
So you said the effects from conversion 2 DO NOT remain on a Porygon or a Ditto or a Metronomed Clefairy/fable when benched, even though it doesn’t say anywhere on Proygon’s card the effects go away when benched.
The rule is ALL attack’s effects are ended if a Pokémon is benched or evolved/devolved.
-
Can a Pokémon with the water gun attack chose to do less damage (Bastoise do 40 with 5 energy’s on him/her)?
Nope, though for the life of me, why would you want to?
-
IF ATTACK MR MIME 30 OR MORE DAMAGE DOSE IT DO 0 OR 20 DAMAGE?
If an attack for 30 or more hits Mr. Mime, it does zero.
-
If a Pokémon is put to sleep, then, during the owners turn he flips the coin and it wakes up, can it attack?
He doesn’t flip during his turn, he flips after a turn ends, so he could flip after the other player’s turn ends and then if he wakes up, he could attack normally, yes.
-
Can you stop your own Aerodactyls Poké Power to evolve your own Pokés?
No, it’s always on. Unless Aero is paralyzed, confused, or asleep.
-
When playing an Arcanine with Defender attached. It will reduce Takedown to only 10 damage. Will it also reduce your opponent’s next attack by 20 also?
Yup.
-
Again referring to the “Step In” power of Dragonite. If I want to retreat a Pokémon with a high-energy retreat cost (*** or ****) - I’ll use Dragonite to “Step In” and then retreat Dragonite for only one *. I feel this was valid, but my opponent didn’t?
That is a valid move.
-
Referring to Pidgeot and the Hurricane Attack. My opponent used a Pokémon Breeder to evolve a basic Pokémon direct to the 2nd stage evolution (leaving the Breeder card between the two on his bench). Later, he moved the 2nd stage evolved Pokémon to act?
Sorry but the full question didn’t come through BUT you do NOT leave the Breeder on the bench, it goes to the discard pile.
-
If Clefairy or Clefable copies Moltres’ Wildfare, does she still have to discard fire cards to use it?
Yup! The discarding is NOT a cost of the attack but affects the result of the attack.
-
On Magmar’s smokescreen if my opponent switches Pokémon would smokescreen be gone?
Yes it would (since it is referring to that particular defending Pokémon).
-
So you do get a prize for knocking out a ditto with a fossil?
Yes you do.
-
Is a Pokémon benched if I pay the retreat cost…slide it down to my bench…and slide up the same Pokémon, would that rid it of poison?
You can’t do that. Retreating means you SWAP the active Pokémon with a Benched one.
-
Can you use energy removal on Electrodes buzzap?
Yes you could.
-
My ditto has 6 damage counters on it and my opponent has an Electabuzz I just knocked out, since he has no active after I knocked out Electabuzz and he has like Likitung on his bench in-between would Ditto be KO’d?
There is no in-between step gang. When Lickitung moves up Ditto copies it.
-
If I use 4 different types of Mewtwo’s in a deck can I use more than 4?
Nope, you can only have 4 max copies of a same named car, regardless of what version it is.
-
Why did WotC give Mew Devolution beam if the other trainer can just re-evolve next turn?
You could use it on one of your own Pokémon in order to use earlier evolution abilities if you needed them.
-
If I have 2 Dodrios on my bench and have an active Electabuzz, can I retreat him for free?
SURE!
-
How long does poisoning last?
Until the Pokémon is benched, evolved, or knocked out.
-
Why are there no Pokémon that are resistant to fire, water, or grass damage?
Cuz fire hurts, water makes you all squinchy, and grass tickles your nose.
-
If an attack says something like 20 damage, and flip a coin. If heads this attack does an additional 20 damage. Is that extra 20 damage added to the base damage or is it added after applying weakness and resistance?
It’s added to the base damage BEFORE Weakness or Resistance is figured.
-
If I KO my opponents last Pokémon but they still have Clefairy Dolls or Mysterious Fossil on the bench, do I automatically win or do I have to KO them first?
You win if you take you or last Prize Card, otherwise the game continues.
-
If I use Porygon to change an opponent’s weakness to the same thing as its resistance, which do I count first when attacking?
You calculate Weakness first.
-
Can you use 4 Vileplume and 4 of the “dark” team rocket Vileplume in the same deck?
Yup.
-
If Ditto copies a 100HP Pokémon, gets 50HP Damage, the opponent then retreats the 100HP monster and replaces it with a 30HP Pokémon. Does Ditto die when the 30HP Pokémon goes active?
Yup.
-
If you have 4 Charizards and 4 evil Charizards could you play all of them?
Sure.
-
Since Double Colorless energy doesn’t count as a basic energy, you can only use 4 of them in a deck, right?
Correct.
-
Will there be a Pokémon tour this summer, similar to last years or this year’s current Pokémon Stadium 2000?
Yup, watch for details on the web site.
-
If Mr. Mime is confused and try’s to attack it fails dose Mr. Mime kill it self?
Yes it would.
-
In regards to ditto, if I have a Venusaur in play, I can energy trans a “grass” energy off of it onto another Pokémon right? But afterwards I can’t move it if it’s not grass energy?
Right!
-
When Mew uses it’s Devolution Beam attack on an opponent’s Pokémon, when can that Pokémon re-evlove?
On that player’s next turn.
-
In Regards to Ditto, If ditto does sword dance, then Scyther retreated. Then it gets gusted in; does it slash for 60?
No, since Ditto would have changed into whatever Scyther had swapped with. When it turned back into Scyther, it is a NEW copy and loses the old attack effects.
-
My brother says only 1 Aerodactyl could be in play at a time…couldn’t as many as 8 (4 on each side) be in play with a Muk somewhere?
Sure.
-
Alot of people tell me that when they use Buzzap on Electrode, I don’t get a prize. DO I get a prize or not?
You don’t get to take a prize when your opponent uses the ‘Buzzap’ power of Electrode. You do draw a prize if your opponent uses the Buzzap power of Electrode.
-
Can you change a double colorless energy card to any type you wish For example change it to two fire energies.
No, double colorless provides just what it says: two colorless energy.
-
How does Blastoise’s Pokémon Power work? Is it just one extra water energy per turn to one Pokémon, or as many water energies from your hand as you want on one Pokémon per turn? Or is it something else all together?
As many water energy as you want from your hand per turn.
-
In regards to the Buzzap, it says to “KO Electrode…” on the text. It states in the rulebook that if a Pokémon is KO, they get a prize. And since the Electrode’s power is to knock it out. They should get a prize. Am I right?
Yes.
-
Can you change double colorless to any type of energy card?
Only double colorless.
-
Since Double Colorless Energy is not counted as a basic energy card . . . can you put down more than one double colorless as well as one energy card per turn?
No, it will count as your energy placement for that turn.
-
If I have a Ditto with a dce on it and I also have a Venusaur can I energy trans the dce?
Yes. Because of Ditto’s power, the DCE can be any type of energy. So you can Energy Trans it.
-
In regards to an earlier question. Why wouldn’t Aerodactyl’s Pokémon power stop other Fossils from evolving into Aerodactyls?
I don’t know where you got that idea. Aerodactyl would stop other M.Fossils from evolving into Aerodactyls.
-
How does the convention 1 of Porygon work? Does retreating take away the affect?
Yes it does. Or evolving the affected Pokémon also removes the conversion effect.
-
What are foil mew’s attacks?
The same as the non-foil Mew.
-
If you use Smokescreen then retreat the Pokémon that is Smoke screened or if Magmar Retreats is it still in effect?
Smokescreen references the defending Pokémon, so if you bench that Pokémon the effect ends. If you bench Magmar then Smokescreen is in effect.
-
Does Defender prevent damage done by a failed attack due to Confusion?
Yes, but it’s important to note that your wording is slightly incorrect. If an attack fails due to the effects of Confusion than that Pokémon attacks itself with that attack.
-
If your using a Pokémon that has a resistance to the opponent’s Pokémon would you flip 4 coins to see if you do damage?
No you wouldn’t
-
Clefairy vs. Blastoise. Clefairy metronomes Blastoise what determines the amount of damage? The amount of water on Blastoise or Clefairy? Or neither?
The amount of extra water energy on Clefairy.
-
If it’s a Hitmonchan with 2 PP’s on it does Invisible Power absorb it? Or does it KO Mr. Mime?
Invisible Wall will absorb it because you calculate the effects of trainer cards before applying Pokémon Powers from the defending Pokémon.
-
If you flip HEADS for a agility attack may your opponent use a attack like Hitmonlee’s Stretch Kick or Kangakhan’s Fetch that turn?
If you’re talking about Rapidash, Agility will prevent any attacks or effects of attacks DONE to Rapidash. So effects to other Pokémon will still happen.
-
Well, here’s another one. When playing, my opponent placed DCE and then Grass Energy on Scyther for one turn, then attacked with Slash. When I called him on it, he stated that DCE wasn’t a basic energy and could play 2 like that. Which of us is right?
You are right, the DCE counts as your energy placement for that turn.
-
Can you put 4 fossil Dragonites and 4 movie promos in your deck?
You can only have 4 of any particular named card. Since both cards have the name Dragonite, then no, you can’t have 4 of each.
-
If Kadabra is confused will a failed attack do 20 or 40 damage to him because of weakness?
A failed attack in this case will do 40 to Kadabra.
-
Do I have to flip 4 coins to do damage to Mr. Mime?
No, unless you’re using a Pokémon that you need to flip 4 coins for.
-
How would the damage on Clefairy count towards hydro pump if it doesn’t read the attack’s costs?
You would have to count the extra energy on Clefairy above the necessary cost to use Metronome, in order to calculate the final damage done by copying Hydro Pump.
-
If Ditto is copying a Pokémon whose attacks are dependent on the number of Fire (or Psychic, or Grass, etc.) Energy Cards attached, and Ditto’s attached energies are considered to be all basic energies at once (per last week’s chat), can one choose to limit how many of the energies are considered of a particular type, so as to get a limited effect, or it is treated that all are of that energy type for purposes of that attack? As an example, Ditto’ing Water Gun attacks and other similar effects. I realize this question is a little obtuse, but only because I can’t ask about Ditto’ing TR Zapdos yet, which this question was actually in reference to?
No, you can’t limit the amount that you choose to use as a specific type. All energy on Ditto counts as all types, all the time.
-
I’d like to clear this up, if Ditto uses Sword’s Dance, but Scyther retreats next turn, is SD still there? I don’t see why not because effects should only go away when you retreat a Pokémon and you are not retreating Ditto.
Yes, the effect is still there, but unless the new Pokémon that Ditto copies has a Slash attack, then Ditto will not be able to take advantage of the SD effect.
-
The TR Dark Charmeleon included in the latest issue of TopDeck has an attack – Fireball – which requires at least one energy card attached to be a Fire Energy Card in order to use it. In last week’s chat, you gave us some of the rulings from R&D on energy, specifically “If a card gives off energy of any type then that card COUNTS as an energy card of that type.” and used the example that a grass-buzzap’d Electrode counts as such and could be moved by Energy Trans. Does this mean then that an appropriate Rainbow Energy or Buzzap’d Electrode is sufficient for powering Dark Charmelon’s attack? And if not, why?
Uh-huh. Aren’t you glad you typed all that?
-
2 weeks ago I had Ditto questions, about Ditto using Charmander’s ember. What was the final ruling on whether or not Ditto has to use FIRE ENERGY CARDS for Charmander’s Ember or Moltres’ Wildfire?
Any energy on Ditto counts as any energy type, so you could use any energy card attached to Ditto as Fire energy cards.
-
How does the ruling saying that ditto’s energy can be moved around, say a fire energy, with Venusaur? Especially since Ditto’s power doesn’t change energy types, just how it applies damage.
Energy on Ditto counts as all energy types.
-
How many times do you flip to see if a Pokémon wakes up?
Once at the end of each player’s turn until the Pokémon wakes up.
-
When Team Rocket comes out, will you be able to use 4 dark Charizards and 4 normal Charizards in your deck?
Yes, because they have different names.
-
MT< Guest14 here seems to think that a DCE is a Trainer card that acts as an energy, as opposed to an energy card in it’s own right. Could you clarify that it is not a Trainer Card for him/her? Sure, the Double Colorless Energy (DCE from now on) counts as an energy card just not a ‘basic’ energy card.
-
Can you have 4 dark Muk and 4 Fossil Muk in a deck?
Yes, and before everyone asks if this is true for their favorite Pokémon and it’s “Dark” equivalent, let me say that this is true for any Pokémon with different names.
-
So to Clarify, Clefable with any 3 energy could do the “extra” damage in a hydro pump? They would not have to be water energy?
Nope! You could use any kind of energy to pay for the metronome attack, THEN energy PAST that would have to be water energy to do the extra Water Pump damage.
-
After Scyther uses swords dance and is sent back to the bench by GOW etc. If I send him back out will the swords affect still be on?
Nope, the Swords Dance effect is ended when Scyther is benched.
-
Can you have 4 Regular Pokémon Like Blastoise and 4 Dark Pokémon like Dark Blastoise in the Same Deck?
Yes you can since they have different names.
-
What is Fire type Pokémon 's best type to be with in a deck?
That would depend on what the player’s in your area are using.
-
Do you think, after tonight, there should be a rulebook made on Ditto and his attacks? Or is he a simple Pokémon whose attacks are easy to figure out?
Nope, to be honest Metronome and Ditto cause us confusion as well. We do our best to try and explain them though.
-
How does using a Clefable/Clefairy’s Metronome on Moltres’ Wildfire work? Because Clefable says to ignore card discarding.
NO. Metronome says to ignore COSTS required to do the attack. The discarding is an effect that affects the amount of cards discarded (not the same thing). Basically Metronome ignores anything that says " IN ORDER TO". This would not affect the discarding.
-
If Pidgeotto or Spearow gets attacked by a Self destructing Magnemite and survives could it use it to the next PKMN?
Sure.
-
Some players freely examine their own discard pile (or their opponent’s) whenever they want. Is this allowed? Or can a discard pile only be examined when you have official business there (like after playing Item Finder).
Discard piles are open knowledge (either player could look through them).
-
So, could I have a Misty’s Psyduck, Sabrina’s Psyduck, and a plain Psyduck in the same deck because they are named differently?
Yes, that would be a DUCKY deck!
-
And on the heels of that, what about a Slash attacks with a base damage of something other than 30 (Sandslash, for example)?
NOPE! Swords Dance says During your next turn, Scyther’s Slash attack’s base damage is 60 instead of 30, SO the Slash attack done after the Swords Dance MUST have a base damage of 30.
-
If you play Pokémon Flute and bring a Pokémon back to your opponent’s bench, can he evolve it on his next turn? Or does he have to wait until a full turn has passed?
Yes he could.
-
About Ditto doing Sword Dance, Would the 60 damage be only done on Scyther’s Slash than the other slashes i.e. Parasect. Cause it says “Scyther’s Slash does 60 instead of 30” so it only works on the slash on Scyther. Not “A Slash attack does 60 instead of 30”.
Could be done on ANY slashes as long as they do 30-damage base. So if Parasect or Charmeleon were switched up AFTER the Ditto as Scyther did Swords Dance, then on the next turn you COULD use their Slash for 60.
-
Is there a text errata on Ditto’s power? If so what?
Nope, it’s all on the cards. If it’s hard to understand or confusing we can help you but there is no errata for Pokémon cards.
-
When you use Pokémon trader, do you have to trade a basic for a basic, stage 1 for stage 1etc… or can you trade any Pokémon for any stage?
You can trade for any stage.
-
Can you use more than one plus power or defender on the same Pokémon on the same turn?
Yes you can.
-
Can you use a switch when you are paralyzed?
Yes, your Pokémon is paralyzed. A switch card is played by the trainer.
-
You can’t put down a Myst. Fossil and or a Clefairy Doll as a starting Pokémon, right? 2) I don’t know why you’d want to, but you can’t search for a mysterious fossil or Clefairy doll with Pokémon trader, right?
You COULD put them down as your starting Pokémon as LONG as you have one other basic in your starting hand. And you are correct you can’t use Trader to pull one of them, as they are trainers when they are not in play.
-
Defender protects against the Pokémon hitting itself right? (Ex. Arcanine Take down with Defender on him will only do 10 to Arcanine right?)
Correct.
-
Dark Charmeleon’s Fireball attack states “Use this attack only if there are any fire Energy cards attached to Dark Charmeleon”, does this mean that Clefable cannot Metronome a Fireball attack unless fire energy is attached to Clefable?
You know, we are going to have to ask R & D on that one.
-
If Vaporeon is hit with Mew’s devolution beam, and reverts to Eevee, can I then evolve Eevee into Flareon or Jolteon when I get the chance, or am can that Eevee only evolve into Vaporeon again?
When it is your turn you could choose to have him evolve however you want (within the evolution rules of course).
-
If Clefable uses its metronome attack on Chansey and uses double edge, does Clefable take the 80 damage?
Yes (why do you keep asking this same question? I’ve deleted it 6 times already?).
-
How long does the confusion effect last?
Until that Pokémon is benched, evolved, removed from play, or the Full Heal trainer card is played on it.
-
If you use electrodes (base) buzzap for energy does the opponent draw a card?
Yes they do, it states for Buzzap KNOCK OUT electrode.

I would like to ask a theoretical question, please. Last week it was ruled that Energy attached to Ditto simply counts as all Basic Energy types. Does this mean that if the Pokémon Ditto is copying has an attack that, say, does 10 damage to itself for each Lightning Energy attached to it when you use it, and Ditto uses that attack, that it would take 10 damage for each Energy card attached to it, since it all counts as all types, even though it says you "may treat Energy.” implying you have a choice?
Correct. You would take the extra damage. R&D has said that you do NOT have a choice as to what the energy counts as, it counts as all basic types.
-
Can the switch card be used to retreat a paralyzed, confused, or sleeping Pokémon?
Yes, you can use a switch card to retreat a confused or asleep or paralyzed Pokémon.
-
Does Magmar’s smokescreen affect when the Defending Pokémon evolves?
Since Magmar’s Smoke screen attack references the Defending Pokémon, by it evolving, it removes that effect.
-
Would I get a prize if I knocked out a doll/fossil?
No, you wouldn’t.
-
What is your suggestion of a good deck (# of basic, stage 1, stage 2, trainer, and energy.)?
Hmmm, the making of your deck is a stage in the development of any maturing Pokémon trainer. For me to influence it would be shameless. ‘Sides, it’s more fun for you to learn it with your friends! BUT, I would look at some of the pre-con decks for basic ratio ideas.
-
Let’s say player one has one prize left and has a Rapidash as active. Player two has a Ditto with 50 damage on it. Ditto KO’s Rapidash but player one has no other Pokémon. Does Ditto turn back into Ditto and get KO’ed or does player two win?
Well it depends on how many prize cards Player two has left. If he or she only has 1 then they would win when they knocked out the Rapidash. If not, then it depends on whether Player one has any more Pokémon on its bench. Need more info for this question.
-
Player two has 3 prizes left and player one has no more Pokémon on his/her bench P1’s Rapidash gets KO’d and P2’s Ditto has 50 damage on it. Who wins?
Player two wins since Player One has his last Pokémon knocked out and doesn’t have anyone on the bench to move up.
-
In your opinion what is the best type of deck to use against a Haymaker?
Any deck that can win? A fast Raindance deck is hard to beat could also try the Psychic Barrier deck too.
-
If a fossil Magmar uses smokescreen against a Charizard does Charizard discard energy before or after flipping a coin?
Before, you still attempt the attack; the Smokescreen might just stop it from having any effect.
-
Also regarding Dark Charmeleon’s Fireball attack: If Dark Charmeleon is confused, is the coin flip to see if the Confused Attack is successful done before or after the coin flip to see if the Fire Energy Card is discarded? I would assume before, since it isn’t a “requirement” per se to potentially discard the Energy until after the attack is already underway.
Correct, you would do its flip AFTER checking the Confusion flip since it is NOT a Requirement of activating the attack.
-
A week or three ago you gave us the ruling that “Energy attached to Ditto counts as all basic energy types at once.” If your Active Ditto is Ditto’ing a Pokémon with a dual-energy attack (say, an attack that requires 1 water and 1 psychic to power), would 1 Energy Card attached to him be sufficient to use that, since that one card would be providing both water and psychic energy simultaneously? I am assuming not, and guessing that situation would be handled much as the “Rainbow Energy” text is handled.
Correct again, just like Rainbow energy. Energy attached to Ditto COUNTS as all basic types but only PROVIDES the normal amount of energy. So a basic energy card would provide 1 energy, a DCE would provide 2; a buzzaped Electrode would also provide 2.
-
At my league we are divided on the question of weather or not plus power would work with Hitmonlee’s stretch kick?
Yes it would.
-
Does benching ALWAYS ‘reset’ the Pokémon completely? For instance, if I use Scyther’s swords dance one turn, and then he gets benched and comes back out next turn, how much damage will Slash do? 30 or 60?
It would do 30; Benching always reset attack effects.
-
If Ditto was facing a Scyther and had Sword danced, and is now facing a Parasect on the VERY next turn does the swords dance still applied to the slash attack?
Yes it does. Good question.
-
With Dodrio retreat costs can be reduced to 0 right?
Correct.
-
Does Aerodactyl’s Pokémon power cancel out a Pokémon breeder?
Correct, you cannot evolve anything (even with a breeder) while Aerodactyl’s Pokémon power is active.
-
Would the same apply to regular Charizard? Would you only discard after flipping to see if the confusion works or not?
No, since it states IN ORDER TO on the discard for Charizard. You must attempt the attack BEFORE you flip for Confusion and so must pay its activation costs.
-
If I do Scyther’s Sword Dance and my Opponent gusts of wind out another Pokémon during their turn, then I make Scyther active again; will his slash do 60?
Nope, benching you Pokémon ended the Swords Dance effect…
-
Mr. Mime PP Invisible Wall whenever an attack does 30 or more damage to Mr. Mime, prevents that damage. I had a kid at the league last week tell me that WOTC told him it is 40 and not 30. I said I go by what is on the card. So, until WOTC makes new?
Sorry but he’s wrong. It’s still 30.
-
MT on Q62 you said PlusPower would work with Stretch Kick, but the text says if the “Defending Pokémon” takes damage. Stretch Kick hits the Bench. I think you should rethink that answer.
You are correct! Plus Power DOES state If this Pokémon’s attack does damage to the Defending Pokémon then add 10 so it would NOT help the Stretch Kick.
-
With Venusaurs energy trans how many energy can you transfer in one turn?
You are only limited by how much energy you have out (grass energy or energy that counts as grass energy). You must use this Power (as often as you’d like) BEFORE your attack.
-
Can you play multiple energies if some of them are DCE’s? Example 2 DCE’s and 1 basic.
You can only play 1 energy per turn (unless you use a trainer card or Pokémon Power or attack to change this rule).
-
If an opponent was just de-evolved by Mew can they play the card back down on their very next turn? The online rulebook states that “you cannot evolve a Pokémon that you just played or evolved on that turn”.
He can evolve it again. You devolved it on YOUR turn, not his.
-
If my active Pokémon is the victim of Victreebel’s Acid attack, may I still use a switch trainer card to switch my active for a benched Pokémon?
Yes you could. Playing a Trainer card is what the trainer does, Retreating is what the Pokémon does and is affected by the Acid attack.
-
Is it possible to use swords dance twice and do even more than 60 damage?
Nope.
-
Does swords dance add 30 or double the damage?
It specifically states that during your next turn, Scyther’s Slash attack’s base damage is 60 instead of 30.
-
If ditto has 40 damage on him, and I use Electabuzz’s thundershock and paralyze him, would ditto be knocked out?
Yes it would (it would revert to Ditto which only has 50 hp) and would be knocked out.
-
Exeeggutor “big explosion”, will you flip two coins or one coin if there is a double colorless energy?
It counts the energy, not the energy cards. That means a DC attached to Exeggutor nets you two flips, not one, for Big Eggsplosion.
-
On Mew’s attack it says, “Just as if it had evolved”, since it de-evolved then it shouldn’t be able to evolve?
Nope, you are using the attack against the other player on YOUR Turn. The statement of “just as if it had evolved” has to do with ending attack effects. The other player CAN evolve that Pokémon on their turn.
-
Because in the rules it says you can only play 1 basic energy and DCE’s don’t count as basic energies so could you not use more then one?
Actually the rulebook states “take an energy card from your hand and attach it to a Pokémon in play”. It doesn’t say BASIC only.
-
If I had a Blastoise on my bench, and rain danced onto my Ditto (imitating a Staryu) and then made all the water energy grass energy, could I energy trans it to a waiting Pokémon, resulting in you realizing this scenario is insane?
Yes you could do that. Who would have Blastoise, Venusar and Ditto in the same deck? And why would the other player EVER let you get them all out?
-
If you have Kangaskhan out and have 2 double colorless energies attached to him, and Poliwarath does his whirlpool, how do you discard one energy from Kangaskhan?
Take a double colorless energy off and discard it.
-
Suppose you have an attack for 30 which is done to a defending Pokémon which is resistant (-30). If you have a Plus Power attached, does your attack do 0 or 10 damage?
Read Plus Power carefully, it says: If this Pokémon damages the defending Pokémon AFTER applying weakness and resistance then Plus Power adds 10 to that damage. So in this case Plus Power wouldn’t do anything.
-
Can you play a double colorless and a basic energy in one tern?
No, you only get to place one energy per turn.
-
Can you have more then 4-rainbow energies since it changes into a basic energy?
No, since it’s not a basic energy you can only use 4 in a deck.
-
Can you use 4 regular Porygon and 4 Cool Porygon in the same deck?
Yes, that’d be…kewl.
-
With energy recover can you bring two rainbow energies back to your hand or only basic energy?
They’re not basic energy, so that would be tough to pull off.
-
I have a confused Scyther, I am trying to do slash, and I flip a coin and get heads. Is Scyther still Confused?
Yes, confusion lasts until he is benched, evolved, or a trainer card removes the effect.
-
Can Ditto use his Pokémon power while its the other players turn?
In what way? If he switches or retreats his Pokémon, then Ditto will automatically transform into it (if he is active and not asleep, confuse, or paralyzed).
-
If I try to retreat my Scyther while he is Confused and I am not successful and I use a full heal, can I retreat again?
Nope. You can only attempt to retreat once if it is paralyzed. If it fails, that Pokémon cannot attempt to retreat again that turn, whether it is still confused or not.
-
Does Ditto automatically transform when the other player changes his or her Pokémon?
Yup (again as long as his power still functions).
-
Does Ditto have to transform when the other player changes Pokémon?
Yup.
-
Is there any purpose for the extra line of 10 10 point spots, (100 points) at the bottom of the badge book pages?
No, just for a chance for you to show you can earn even more.
-
Can Meowth’s cat punch be used on a benched Pokémon if it would knock it out?
Yup.
-
How does Clefable or Ditto copy any attack that requires you to discard a specific energy?
Each Pokémon handles this differently, if you have specific questions about each, check out the chat logs from the last few weeks. We’ve really worked over this subject.
-
If Scyther does sword dance, but is put to sleep the next turn, will it still do 60 damage if I wake it up?
Right before your turn or right after?
-
What’s your opinion on people using all the same deck hey makers rain dance, etc?
At this point, there’s been so few tough to beat combos that it doesn’t really surprise me. I think Team Rocket will throw some new deck types into the mix.
-
After you do sword dance and are put to sleep, will sword dances effect still be their?
Check out the wording on Scyther. Swords Dance stays in effect for Scyther’s NEXT turn. If he’s asleep during his next turn, then he’ll miss his chance to double the base damage of his Slash attack.
-
If your Scyther did swords dance one turn then the opponent used gust of wind and put him on the bench would the Scyther the next turn still do 60 damage if you get it as your active Pokémon?
No, he’d lose the bonus if he’s benched. D’oh!
-
Are you able to use Devolution Spray on a Pokémon, then evolve onto that Pokémon? I say no, they say Yes, What’s the verdict! (Example: I Use Devolution spray on my Kakana back into a Weedle, Am I able to evolve that weedle back into Kakuna (with the necessary cards) in the same turn?)
Yes you can. Devolving a Pokémon does not count as evolving a Pokémon.
-
On Devolution Spray, it says all status effects are removed, “just as if you had evolved it”. I assume this also mean that attack effects (Smokescreen, Agility) are also removed?
Correct!
-
Also, regarding Devolution Spray: can you re-evolve a Pokémon on the same turn you de-evolved them with Devolution Spray? As an example, de-evolving Charmeleon to Charmander, then immediately evolving him back up to another Charmeleon or Dark Charmelon?
Yes you can.
-
If you CAN immediately use Devolution Spray (if the answer to my last question was you can’t, just ignore this question), does that interrupt the normal flow of evolution? For example, on your turn can you evolve up from X to Y, use Y’s Pokémon Power?
Sure, you can do any of these things on your turn before the attack (make sure you follow the particular Pokémon power’s specifics though).
-
I play a Squirtle. opp. plays a mew. I play a breeder and a Blastoise. opp used devolution beam. What happens to my breeder card?
The Breeder is a trainer card. After you play it, you discard it. It doesn’t sit on the Pokémon.
-
You recently ruled that if Confused, the coin flip to see if the Confused Moltres can attack successfully would come before discarding the Energy Cards as an effect of the Wildfire attack. Am I correct in assuming the same sequence would be involved?
Umm, what is the rest of the question?
-
If your undamaged Ditto is facing a Mysterious Fossil, and the opponent is stalling, the only way you can break the deadlock (assuming you have no Switch or Scoop Up) is by discarding Ditto, and that will award the opponent a free prize?
You could discard the Ditto BUT discarding is NOT the same as knocking out, no prize given.
-
You recently ruled that if Confused, the coin flip to see if the Confused Moltres can attack successfully would come before discarding the Energy Cards as an effect of the Wildfire attack. Am I correct in assuming the same sequence would be involved for a Smokescreened Moltres, and other similar effects that might be on him?
Correct! Kori, you do make us think here.
-
Suppose I use Venomoth’s shift to shift into some color other than green (let’s say Blue), and it gets confused, does it go back to being green or stays blue?
It stays as the last changed type but you can’t use it again while it is confused.
-
What exactly does the Porygon Card do in the Game? It doesn’t have any attacks.
You can use it in combination with other Pokémon.
-
Hmm. Regards to the Devolution spray question. I tried it out in my TCG GB and it doesn’t work. I’m not saying that Devolution spray counts as the Pokémon being evolved. But rules states that a Pokémon has to be in play for at least a full turn in order to be evolved. And since De-evolving it is turned into a different Pokémon name. That Pokémon needs to wait a turn to evolve it since it’s not the same Pokémon before you used the Trainer Card. I hope everyone would agree on this but Am I r
There intent is clear, even though that Pokémon has a new name (an earlier evolution) it is still the SAME Pokémon. So, you CAN evolve a Pokémon that you just devolved.
-
In the Dark Charmeleon (in English) card, Fireball says “Only use this card if there are R energy cards attached to it” Isn’t that a bit redundant?
Ok, that card did come out in Top Deck so I can talk about it. That wording is there to specifically interfere with someone Metronoming it. This defeats the Metronomes ignore attack requirements. If you Metronomed this attack, you would STILL have to have Fire energy on the Clefable/Clefairy in order to use that attack.
-
Does Ditto copy Pokémon Powers that reference “when this card is knocked out” or not?
Sure it does.
-
Fair enough on the Ditto Dark Gyarados Question. How about this the: when Ditto is knocked out and is returned to the Discard pile, does he revert to boring old Ditto when he hits it, or does he hit it as Ditto-as-whatever-card-he-was-copying? If I am wording that comprehensively.
He hits it as Ditto.
-
If I have a Ditto-Blastoise, can I rain dance grass energy on to Ditto? A Lapras? This is assuming Transform is in effect, of course.
Nope, RainDance says specifically only water energy from your hand. Ditto’s energy effect is only on energy attached to Ditto.
-
Say I use Venomoth’s shift to change its type to psychic. Can I change it back to grass if the only other types of Pokémon are psychic and electric?
You can use Venomoth’s Power once per turn before you attack (as long as it isn’t Paralyzed, Asleep, or Confused).
-
What’s the point of Devolution?
Devolving a Pokémon in play will remove any effects that the Pokémon is suffering from, like Poison.
-
Will Aerodactyl receive any confusion damage?
Yes, if he’s confused and fails an attack. Of course Aerodactyl is resistant to fighting, so the damage will be prevented.
-
Can you play Devolution Spray on a basic Pokémon? The reason I ask this be because it says “Choose a Pokémon in play and a stage of evolution.” Then it says to discard all cards of that stage or higher attached to that Pokémon. So if I had a Basic Pokémon down I could choose Stage 1 and the basic doesn’t have any attached to it so I wouldn’t have to discard any right? Same for Stage 1 I could choose stage 2.
For Devolution spray you can’t choose a stage in play.
-
Does Mew’s Devolution beam bales you to choose any Pokémon?
Any evolved Pokémon in play.
-
Can I retreat more than one time per term? For example, can I retreat Spearow and put in out again?
I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t.
-
Situation: My Jigglypuff does lullaby and the opponent flips at the beginning of his turn…fails… flips at the end and is successful…my turn now, right? It’s my turn to attack, right?
That’s right. Sing another Lullaby.
-
Need to make sure, does Ditto UTALIZE and USE Pokémon Powers that say, “when this card is knocked out” so that you would do the effects of the Power or not?
You mean like Machamp’s Strikes Back? Then yes. (I reserve the right to be overruled by R&D)
-
How long does Porygons attacks last?
Just while the converted Pokémon is the Active Pokémon. Remember that anything other than damage that was the result of a Pokémon attack goes away if the affected Pokémon goes to the bench.
-
Since Pokémon, need to wait until the end of their turn, in order to evolve, You can’t be able to use Devolution spray and evolve that Pokémon on the same turn since when you de-evolve it, it becomes a new Pokémon and it needs to wait until the end of your turn in order to evolve.
Where did you get that Pokémon can’t evolve until the end of their turn? That’s not true.
-
When Ditto uses Double Colorless energy against Moltres and uses wildfire each DCE discards one card, correct?
I would say yes, but I’ll double check on this one for next week.
-
Can mysterious fossil be a basic for any Stage 1?
No, only the Stage 1’s that evolve from Mysterious Fossil
-
For Mew’s Psywave, or Mewtwo’s Psychic, does a DCE count as 1 energy card, or 2?
Only one energy CARD, but two energy.
-
Also, If a Clefable metronomes a Mewtwo, will Barrier work?
Yes
-
If a Clefable metronomes Arcanine’s Takedown, Does Clefable do 30 damage to itself?
Yup!
-
If Raticate has a PlusPower on it, Does Duper Fang do half of the Defending Pokémon’s HP plus 10?
Well, SUPER Fang would, yes.
-
If I evolve a Pokémon this term does it take away the effect of Rhyhorn’s Leer?
Yup.
-
If you attach a Defender to Chansey, and then Alakazam Damage Swaps 20 damage to it, does it do no damage?
Damage Swap moves COUNTERS; it does not count as causing Damage.
-
If I agility, and flip heads, can Moltres use wildfire?
Yes he can, that doesn’t affect Rapidash.
-
If Ditto Transforms to a Lapras, then by some twist of fate gets 70 damage on it, then KO’s Lapras, and the only Pokémon on his bench is a Blastoise, does Ditto stay alive, or does it go to the discard pile?
He would still be fine; he would transform into Blastoise, which has 100 HP.
-
Let’s say I use Porygon’s convention 2 attack to change its resistance to fighting. And when my opponent attack with a fighting Pokémon, do I apply the resistance first or the weakness first?
Weakness is always applied first.
-
If Ditto KOs the Active, There is no active, so it is now a Ditto, right?
No, it would then Transform into whatever the other player’s next active Pokémon is. If he doesn’t have one (any on the bench) the game is over and you win.
-
Could Blastoise Raindance Rainbow Energy onto a Venusaur or Charizard?
Rainbow Energy is from Rocket, so no rulings yet gang.
-
So I put down a Mysterious Fossil and I am not allowed to evolve it until my next turn, correct?
Correct.
-
I have a question. Let’s say a Charmander is battling a Bulbasaur. If Charmander uses scratch does that do 20 damage? Or is it 10 damage since the energy needed is colorless?
It does 20. It’s the type of Pokémon that affects Weakness and Resistance, NOT the type of energy that the attack uses.
-
If your active Pokémon is asleep, do you have to flip at the end of each turn, or can you stay asleep if you wish?
You have to flip.
-
If you don’t want to attack, can you choose not to?
Yes, you don’t have to attack.
-
Does Venomoth’s power work even though that specific type you want to change into isn’t in play?
Nope. Has to be a type that is in play.
-
This is in regard to my earlier question. If I use Venomoth’s “Shift” to change it to psychic, can I change it back to grass (on my next turn) if the only other types of Pokémon are psychic and electric?
No you can’t. Since there are no other grass Pokémon, you couldn’t choose that type.
-
On the dark Charmeleon pre-release, isn’t the line about the Fire Energy really another requirement? I mean if you don’t have any Fire energy you can’t attack. Sounds like a requirement to me!
Nope, it’s not a requirement, it is a condition. Requirements always have “IN ORDER TO” in their text.
-
If Porygon changed Arkanines weakness to fire would it hit it self-30 or 60, gameboy tcg it hits 30 but thats not important.
It would take 60 due to the weakness to fire. The gameboy TCG has some errors in it.
-
Nidokings poison says it does 20 points, is that on each time of poison damage or just the first?
Each time.
-
Can you evolve evil Pokémon from normal ones?
There are no Dark basic Pokémon so they all start there. If you evolve a basic into a Dark Pokémon though, then it is now Dark. You can’t evolve it into a 2nd stage non-dark. Once a Pokémon steps onto the Dark side, forever will it rule it steps? Or, something likes that.
-
It stays dark unless you devolve back to its basic, right?
Correct.
-
If you evolve a basic into a dark then use a devolution spray, are you aloud to evole it into a normal?
Sure.
-
How can you devolve a Pokémon?
Play the Devolution Sprat Trainer card on it. Or use Mew’s Devolution Beam attack.
-
On my Dark Alakazam, it says that it evolves from Dark Kadabra. I wanted to know if Dark Alakazam could evolve from a regular Kadabra.
Nope it cannot. The evolution rule for the Dark Pokémon is as follows: Since there are no Dark Basic Pokémon, you always start with a non-dark basic. Then you can choose to evolve it to a dark or non-Dark stage 1.
Once it chooses to be dark or non-dark, it can only evolve to the stage 2 version of the same type So Dark Kadabra can only evolve into Dark Alakazam.
-
Can movie promo Pikachu use Recharge to get a Rainbow Energy from the deck, or does it have to be a basic Electric Energy card? (If Rainbow Energy is OK, I assume it does not cause damage, since it is not played from the hand?)
That would not work. Rainbow Energy only counts as all-basic energy types WHILE IN PLAY. This is not the case when it is in the deck.
-
TR was Misprint City!! anyway Does Grimer’s Poison Gas actually makes the Pokémon fall asleep, or was it a misprint that it supports to make it poisoned…
Grimer’s Poison Gas should result in poisoning the defending Pokémon, but as you know our TR version was misprinted and so it will only put them to sleep. Play this card as written.
-
Will Aerodactyl (resistance to fighting) do confusion damage to itself?
Nope, it has resistance to fighting.
-
Dark Gloom is on my bench, the defender is Haunter, and I use Gloom’s Pokémon power and flip heads. Must I flip again due to Haunter’s transparency? Or is that unnecessary, since a Pokémon power is not the same as an attack, even if it does damage?
You would NOT have to flip for Transparency. It has you flip for ATTACKS against it, not Pokémon Powers.
-
Suppose Ditto is poisoned, then Snorlax becomes active opposite Ditto. Does Ditto’s poison cease? It says Snorlax cannot BECOME poisoned, but what if Ditto (as Snorlax) is already poisoned?
The poisoning does NOT cease. Snorlax’s Power says it can’t BECOME poisoned but in this case, the Ditto as Snorlax already IS.
-
Dark Primape is confused, tries to attack, and the attack fails. Does it do 50 damage to himself, or 20 damage to himself and 30 damage to the defending Pokémon?
It does 50 to itself (OUCH!).
-
Can TR Charmander’s Pokémon power be used to move a Rainbow Energy to TR Charmander?
Yes you can.
-
If opponent’s Ditto has 40 damage, on my turn if I retreat my active for an Abra with 30HP then immediately retreat the Abra for a Scyther, was Ditto knocked out at the moment it became an Abra?
Yes it was.
-
If MP Mewtwo attacks with Energy Absorption, and one of the cards attached from the discard pile is Rainbow Energy, that energy does not do any damage to Mewtwo (since the card was not played from the hand) but can still be consider psychic energy?
Correct! That would work! Good question.
-
If an opponent already has Nidoking’s Toxic double-poison, then next turn I use a “normal-poison” attack, does the opponent retain Toxic’s double-poison condition (20) or does it now become a single-poison condition (10)?
It would gain a single poison effect (the new effect replaces the old one).
-
If I use a Dark Vileplume with the error, what would it’s weakness be considered?
As is on the card, Fighting.
-
Clarification for Dark Hypno, the damage calculated by its Bench Manipulation attack is applied to the *defending* Pokémon, not to the benched Pokémon, right?
Nope! Wrong! It’s as is, the number of Pokémon on his bench…
Dark Hypno states the Your opponent flips a number of coins equal to the number of benched Pokémon he has in play. For each tails the attack does 20 damage to him.
-
For Dark Charmeleon, would 3 Rainbow Energy and/or 2 “Buzzapped Fire Electrodes” satisfy the requirement of having “any fire Energy cards attached”?
Yes they would (they both count as fire energy cards).
-
If Jungle Primeape is already Confused, then attempts to do Tantrum and succeeds (confusion flipped heads), then the flip called for by the Tantrum attack is heads, is he still confused or not?
He is still confused.
-
On Alakazam’s Pokémon power, can you move as many as you want?
You may move 1 damage counter, but you can use this power as many times as you want before your attack. You can move as many as you want before your attack, but you have to move them one at a time.
-
What does dark Magneton’s magnetic lines attack do if your opponent has no benched Pokémon? Do you discard the energy card?
Nope, you don’t do anything with it.
-
Can you evolve dark Wartortle in dark Blastoise?
Yup.
-
Can Devolution Spray be played on a Basic Pokémon? It says to choose a Pokémon in play and a Stage of Evolution so I could choose a Basic Pokémon and choose Stage 1, then I wouldn’t have to discard any cards off of it and it would be healed of any status effects. Am I correct in assuming this?
Nope, the assumption is that you are picking a stage of evolution that is in play.
-
Am I correct in assuming that Dark Primeape’s Frenzy Pokémon Power (which adds +30 to all attacks when Confused) also applies to damage taken from a failed Confusion flip to attack? In other words, if a Confused Dark Primeape flips tails on an attack attempt, it ends up attacking itself for 20+30=50 damage.
Correct (we are checking R&D on you previous questions Kori).
-
In the game I have a choice of weaknesses with dark Vileplume: With the holo it’s grass; non-holo=fire, correct?
No, the holo has Fire for Weakness, the non-holo has Fighting.
-
Regarding why you do get a prize for KOing Ditto when he is copying a Clefairy Doll, you said “When a Pokémon hits the discard pile it reverts back to its normal type BEFORE you count it as a knocked out Pokémon or not.” So would this mean if Ditto is copying a Dark Gyarados and is KO’d, he would NOT use the copied Final Beam Pokémon Power because he would revert back to Ditto BEFORE being counted as a Knocked Out Pokémon (which is when Final Beam would kick in)?
Okay, got the official answer. Ditto copying Dark Gyarados WOULD still check to see if it gets its final beam off. The official rule is that when a Pokémon gets Knocked out, you check for powers and other effects. Then the Ditto would revert to itself WHEN it hits the discard pile. And a prize card would be given. I know this is somewhat confusing. The ruling though is that when Ditto copies a Clefairy Doll or Mysterious Fossil and is knocked out, the other player still gets a prize card.
-
Also regarding Ditto copying a Dark Gyarados – assuming that the KO’d Ditto CAN use Final Beam (if it can’t, please ignore this question :->), am I correct in assuming that it would do 20 damage for each Energy card of ANY type attached to Ditto, since all Energy Cards attached to Ditto are considered to be all types (including Water) simultaneously?
Correct.
-
Since Rainbow Energy counts as all types simultaneously when attached, am I correct in assuming that Rainbow Energy would also counts as Water towards calculating the damage done by Gyarados’ Final Beam?
Correct.
-
Dark Dragonite’s Pokémon Power does not have the “you cannot use this Power if your bench is already full” text like most other Bench-building powers and attacks do. Does this mean that by using Dark Dragonite you can bypass the normal five-Pokémon limit to your bench?
C’mon. That’s silly. There isn’t room to put the reminder text on every single card. The rule is the bench can only have 5 max (EVER).
-
If I have a Squritle on the bench and I Computer Search and then take a Pokémon Breeder and use a Professor Oak Than use a different Computer Search and take Item Finderand use Item Finder to take a Breeder can I use the breeder?
Yes, trying to make an easy question harder are we? Hmm?

On Rainbow Energy, it states “Doesn’t count as a basic Energy Card when not in play.” I assume from that statement then that it DOES count as a Basic Energy Card while in play?
Correct.
-
In the rules it states that when a Pokémon evolves it becomes free of Poison, Sleep, Confusion, Paralysis, or anything else that may be the result of an attack. Does this mean that damage is also taken off of it when it evolves?
No.
-
Earlier you had ruled that a Buzzap’d Electrode can only choose to provide the six basic energy forms. With Team Rocket’s addition of Rainbow, Full Heal and Potion Energy, has that list been expanded? And if so, how does Electrode handle abilities of special energy cards?
When you choose a TYPE it can only be of the 6 basic forms (fire, water, etc). You cannot choose the special energies.
-
On the Team Rocket Zubat, under it’s Sneak Attack Pokémon Power; it finishes with "Apply Weakness and Resistance.” but without a space between it and the preceding sentence. Since no other description so far has bothered to remind us to apply those, was this a misprint that was actually supposed to say, “Don’t apply Weakness or Resistance”?
We miss a space and it changes the ruling? Geez you guys are a tough crowd. Nope. Play it as written. And you meant Dark Golbat not Zubat, correct? (Zap!)
-
Does Ditto copy status or attack effects of a Pokémon? For example, if Ditto went up against a Pokémon that had been previously Converted by Porygon, would he copy the original stats or the Converted stats? What about copying a Shifted Venomoth?
Ditto always copies the original. It does not copy any effects on the defending Pokémon (like Poison, or Shift or any of those).
-
How does (TR)Porygon’s Conversion 1 attack? Does the attack last even after Porygon is retreated? If not, then what is the point of the attack?
Yes it does. If the defending Pokémon retreats or evolves it would lose the effect but you can retreat Porygon and bring up a Pokémon that has attacks that are the same as the changed Weakness (that is the point of Porygon).
-
I assume that if Dark Vileplume is active, Mysterious Fossil cannot be played?
Correct.
-
On Snorlax’s Pokémon power? If he can’t be put to sleep and all that stuff, then why does it say the power doesn’t work if he’s ALREADY asleep and stuff?
There are ways to stop a Pokémon power (like Goop Gas attack). If Snorlax is put Asleep or Confused while his power is inactive., it would NOT come back on while that effect was still in place.
-
How many Rainbow Energy cards can you have in your deck and how about the other TR Energy card?
Four of any non-basic energy allowed per deck.
-
If trying to evolve into, for instance, Dark Charizard, would you need to have a Dark Charmeleon out to evolve from?
Yes, exactly.
-
When you use Dark Hypno’s Bench Manipulation attack, the text is unclear as to whether the damage goes onto the benched Pokémon or if the damage goes onto the defending Pokémon. It says “this attack does 20x the # of tails” but to whom?
Just the defending Pokémon, that’s all.
-
If you have a Snorlax as your active Pokémon and use the Pokémon power of Drowzee (Rocket), would Snorlax’s Pokémon power resist Drowzee’s or would he become asleep?
Snoralax’s Thick Skin Pokémon Power would resist it.
-
What would happen if used Porygons conversion 1 attack and change a Pokémon weakness to the same as the Pokémon resistance
You always calculate Weakness before Resistance. So you would double the damage (if it was of the appropriate type) and then subtract 30.
-
If your Pokémon is confused and you failed to retreat it, can you still attack? (If you still have the energy to do it)
Sure.
-
What will the official ruling on Dark Vileplume’s weakness be?
Play Dark Vileplume as it reads.
-
So ‘effected’ Pokémon can retreat to become ‘cured’. And if the Pokémon that affected the Pokémon retreats, there is no curing of effect. For example, I changed Jigglypuff’s weakness to psychic with TR Porygon and I can retreat Porygon with the weak?
It depends on the particular attack and whom it references. For example if it only mentions the defending Pokémon, then benching or evolving that one amends the effect.
-
If it references the active AND the defending Pokémon, then benching or evolving either would end the effect.
It all depends on who is mentioned in the text.
-
If you use fossil Magmar’s smoke screen and your opponent retreats its Pokémon. Is the effect of the attack still on or is it canceled?
It is ended (it is referencing the defending Pokémon).
-
What happens when you Metronome Selfdestruct? Do you take the damage?
Yes, you’ll still take the damage, if that’s what you meant.
-
Regarding Dark Dragonite’s Summon Minions, if your bench is full (or only one slot left) can you keep the two cards in your hand or are you not allowed to use the power at all?
No, you can only take one Pokémon from your deck in that case.
-
I’ve heard Dark Vileplume has a Pokémon Power called Hayfever. What does it do?
When that Pokémon is NOT Confused, Asleep, or Paralyzed and it is in play, NO Trainer cards can be played.
-
Would pokedex, Here comes Team Rocket, and TR Rattata Pokémon power: Trickery be a good combo?
Sure, also try Mankey from Jungle.
-
On the trainer card challenge can you play a mysterious fossil or Clefairy doll?
No you can’t. Those are Trainer Cards while they are still in the deck. You can only pull basic Pokémon from the deck with Challenge.
-
Is it possible to knock out more than one of your opponent’s Pokémon at the same time?
Sure!
-
If you use the trainer, Here Comes Team Rocket, then you use the TR Ratatta’s Pokémon Power, would you switch your prize, then the top card of your deck would be face up or facedown?
Does it matter? Your opponent will know what you’re putting there anyway? For the record though, put the Trainer face down on top of your deck.
-
What if you play A Mulligan Mewtwo deck and all your Pokémon are in your prizes. What will happen?
Well first of all, that is a lousy deck design, take the fun out of the game. You would keep reshuffling, never drawing a basic Pokémon, your opponent would stop taking extra cards, the game would never start, and people would boo you. If it was a tournament, you would get a delay of game penalty.
-
If you Metranome on Moltras how many energy cards can you discard?
As many fire energy cards as you have attached to Clefable/Clefairy.
-
If you have an Alakazam move 30 damage from a Chansey to a Mr. Mime with its Pokémon Power on, does it put the damage on it, does it not take the damage? Or does it still?
Ok, Alakazam can only move 1 damage counter at a time so Mr. Mime’s Power wouldn’t kick in. Secondly you are moving damage counters, NOT attack damage so again no effect.
-
I was wondering what Venusaur you would recommend using in play? The Base set one or the Promo.
That would be up to you, I think the base set Venusaur’s Energy Trans Power is more useful though.
-
If you have a Clefairy Doll or Mysterious Fossil in hand, can you mulligan? Or are you forced to play it because it counts as a basic Pokémon.
You can mulligan because it doesn’t count as a Basic Pokémon when it’s in your hand.
-
If I use Mewtwos absorb and pull a rainbow energy do I damage my self
No you damage Mewtwo.
-
Earlier I asked about the Trainer: Challenge, what I meant was the Trainer CARD Challenge in the TR set.
If you and your opponent both have space left on your benches, then Challenge! loads your benches. If your benches are full, then it’s baically another Bill card. You can’t have too many Bill’s, can you?
-
Can you evolve a “Dark” card from a non-team rocket basic card; also could you evolve a base 1 Charmeleon into a dark Charizard or a Dark Charmeleon into a base 1 Charizard?
All Pokémon start as basic, so you can go from Base 1 Charmander to Dark Charmeleon. You cannot go from Base 1 Charmeleon to Dark Charizard though. Once you start evolving a ‘Dark’ Pokémon you have to keep going that way.
-
About that previous ruling on the Mewtwo mulligan deck… If you’re playing by the rules, wouldn’t you draw your hand and resolve mulligans before you lay your prizes out? and then how could the Mewtwo’s get into the prizes so you don’t draw a basic?
Correct. Some players jump ahead and lay prizes BEFORE the y look at their hands (which as you mentioned is incorrect ) . Sorry gang, had to take a long AD&D call.
-
You play with a raindance deck right? What team rocket cards have u added and why? I’m a fellow raindance player
I play with a Here comes Team Rocket and a TR Rattatta to unlock my prizes. I also play with 2 Nightly Garbage Runs to bring cards back from the discard pile so I can oak again if need be.
-
Is it possible to put 4 kadabras and 4 dark kadabras in the same deck?
Yes it is, they have different names.
-
Why does Nightly Garbage Run say 3 basic Pokémon, evolutions, or basic energy when it should say up to a total of?
You take back 3 cards total, you can choose form basic energy or evolutions, or basic Pokémon.
-
If Rainbow Energy acts as any Basic Energy Card, how many can you put in your deck?
4 it is NOT a basic energy, only counts as one when in play.
-
Can electrode be buzzapped into 2 Rainbow energy or Potion Energy?
Nope, only basic energy.
-
Can you have multiple Dark Muks so you have 2 colorless retreat cost on your opponent per Dark Muk?
Sure! Each one adds 2 colorless to the retreat cost for the defending player.
-
Ditto is active, and the opposing PKMN is Dark Arbok. Ditto has 40 damage on it. Dark Arbok does stare on Ditto. Is Ditto (now with 50 damage) knocked out because it’s PKMN Power stops working, or is it not because it’s still Dittoing Dark Arbok, a
Correct, Ditto would revert to Ditto and 50 damage would knock him out.
-
Dark Gyarados is active, and Dark Arbok is the opposing PKMN. Dark Gyarados has 60 damage and Dark Arbok uses Stare on it. Does Dark Gyarados still do Final Beam?
No it would not; the Stare attack stops the defending Pokémon’s Power from working, so it would stop the Final Beam from working.
-
Can Clefable copy dark Charizards continuous fireball?
Yes. You’ll have to flip coins equal to the number of fire energy cards attached to Clefairy if you copy it though.
-
Will Dark Vileplume still be able to use its weakness to fire?
If you’re playing in a tournament, you’ll use the weakness of the Dark Vileplume that you have in play. Having two weaknesses to choose from when building your deck could be helpful depending on what decks you’re likely to face.
-
On the ruling on Ditto/Myst. Fossil, when Electrode is Buzzap’d it is KO’d. But when Kabuto is KO’d the opponent gets a prize. The basics (Mist. Fossil is a trainer!) Are different, so could you clarify that a little better?
I don’t understand this question. When you buzzap and Electrode the opponent also gets a prize. When Ditto is copying a Mysterious Fossil it reverts to Ditto when it is knocked out and so the opponent gets a prize. It is a Pokémon copying a trainer card that acts like a basic Pokémon. Make sense?
-
I meant when Kabuto is KO’d, your opponent gets a prize, and it’s basic is a Trainer when it hits the discard pile. That shouldn’t count as a KO when a Buzzap’d Electrode counts as a KO. (Continues on next question or later)
Ok, I get what you are saying but don’t try and use logic for this sort of thing. It doesn’t matter if a card actually hits the discard pile or not. Ditto is a Pokémon that is only COPYING a trainer card that acts like a Pokémon. When Ditto is knocked out, IT DOESN’T matter what he was.
-
NO! Dark Muks have to be active! You can’t have multiple at 1 time!
Correct, I made an error.
-
Smokescreen: does it stay in effect even if Magmar is gusted back on the next player’s turn, as long as?
Since Smokescreen references the Defending Pokémon, only benching or evolving that Pokémon will end its effect.
-
Also with TR Magikarp. If I have a Ditto against it, with a Gyarados in my deck, could I use Waterfall Evolution to evolve Ditto into a Gyarados?
We will check on this but Ditto says that it cannot evolve, period. The Magikarp ruling just lets you use that attack to ignore the Aerodactyl Pokémon Power. It still has the effect of evolving.
-
If an Alakazam uses Teleport Blast and goes on the bench, while knocking out the opponents Active Dark Gyarados, do you use Dark Gyarados’ power on Dark Alakazam or your new active Pokémon?
Damage is done BEFORE you switch Dark Alakazam back to the bench. So you would resolve the Knock Out effects BEFORE you Bench the Dark Alakazam.
-
Normally Ditto can’t evolve on his own (for example, he’s copying a Charmander and you wish to play a Charmeleon in your hand onto him). However, TR Magikarp’s Rapid Evolution bypasses the rules of normal Evolution rules (since it isn’t affected by Aerodactyl and can “evolve” Magickarp the same turn it was played). Therefore, could then a Ditto copying TR Magikarp use Rapid Evolution to evolve himself into a Gyarados since Rapid Evolution overrides normal rules for evolution? Similarly, what about Metronoming Rapid Evolution?
Nope. We explained this already (though we will check R&D for you to verify). Rapid Evolution still counts as evolving as in it has the same effects as. Since you are NOT playing a card from your hand this is not the Standard Evolution step so this is why it ignores the Aerodactyl power. It still COUNTS for the purposes of Ditto’s not being able to evolve, period. No matter how the evolution is done, Ditto CANNOT evolve, period.
-
Is Dark Dugtrio’s Pitfall Pokémon Power cumulative in any way? For example, you have 2 Dark Dugtrios in play – does a retreating Defending Pokémon have to flip twice (once per each Dark Dugtrio in play) and suffer 20 damage per tails, or does it flip once and risk 40 damage (20 per Dark Dugtrio)? Or are it just one flip and 20 damage regardless of how many Dark Dugtrios you have in play? And if does involve multiple coin flips, do you stop after the retreating Pokémonfirst takes damage, or continue flipping for each Dark Dugtrio in question?
They are cumulative. You would flip for each Dugtrio’s effect, whether any succeed or not.
-
Can Spearow’s mirror move poison the opponent if (let’s say) the final result of the last attack was 30 damage and poison?
Yup! It would do 30 damage and Poison.
-
Concerning the refusal to issue errata for Pokémon: I would simply like to suggest a few things. 1) Errata would be much easier for players to understand than, say, the various Ditto rulings. Yet they’re already expected to know the latter. 2) The policy against fixing the errors doesn’t seem to make sense in this case since WotC doesn’t own the game, simply translates. The translations should be accurate. 3) Errata only effects DCI sanctioned tournaments when you get right down to it. Fixing the cards won’t hurt casual players. Not fixing them hurts serious tourney going players, however. 4) There’s no way the errata list would ever be more than a page. 5) A lot of us would sure appreciate that erratum.
Ok, first please keep in mind that no matter how much some players may wish otherwise, Pokémon has a core younger audience. You cannot have the same expectations for the sophistication of the average player as you can with Magic or other more mature games. Most younger players play the cards as read. They do not even know what erratum is? We are aware that some of the misprints can be somewhat confusing but it will be even harder with errata for the average player. Nothing is written in stone so things may change as the sophistication changes. BUT, thank you for your comments.
-
Okay, thanks for the ruling on Ditto and Rapid Evolution. However, what about Metronoming the attack? What would happen? Anything?
That won’t work either. Gyarados and Drak Gyarados must be placed on Magickarp only, not a Clefairy/Clefable.
-
Will benching a Pokémon end Agility’s effects?
Only benching the attacking Pokémon since Agility only references it (like Rapidash).
-
If you have two Dodrio’s on your bench, and a Clefable out active, will Clefable retreat for free?
Yes.
-
How much damage would Dark Weezing take if Clefable/Clefairy metronome’s the attack?
20 damage for each Weezing, Koffing, and Dark Weezing in play, as usual.
-
How do you use the Trainer card “Challenge” and the Rainbow Energy Card? I don’t get how to use them.
Ok for Challenge, you ask the other player if he accepts the Challenge or not. If he says no, then you draw 2 cards and it’s done. If he says yes, you both can search through your deck and pull out basic Pokémon and put them on your bench (remember the bench can only have 5 maximum Pokémon on it). For Rainbow Energy, when you attach this energy to a Pokémon (from your hand), that Pokémon takes 10 points of damage. The Rainbow Energy now counts as all basic Energy types at the same time (grass, fire, water, psychic, lightning, and fighting).
-
If you use plus powers on an Electabuzz, will it increase the damage it does to itself?
No, because Plus Power only increases damage done to the defending Pokémon.
-
Here’s a Haunter question. Say Chansey double edges my active Fossil Haunter. I flip heads. Does Chansey still do 80 damage to himself?
Yes it does, Transparency only prevents effects of attacks done to Haunter only.
-
Dark Weezing’s Mass explosion says it does 20 damage x the # of Koffing, Weezing, dark Weezing in play, then each Koffing Weezing and dark Weezing take 20 damage, so wouldn’t that mean Metronoming the attack would do 40 damage to dark Weezing?
If there was only the one Dark Weezing and no other ones or Weezings or Koffings out in play anywhere, then yes, it would do 40 to the other Dark Weezing.
-
Dk Blastoise’s HydroCannon says for extra-energy damage, “You can’t add more than 40 damage in this way”. I presume that means BEFORE applying weakness & resistance, right? If so, when fully pumped with 4W it’ll do a whopping 140 to most fire types.
Correct!
-
Re: “TR Magikarp” earlier: So although Aerodactyl’s PkmnPower says “no more Evolution cards can be played”, what you are telling us is that it really means “they cant be played FROM YOUR HAND” rather than “they cant be played AT ALL”. I dunno.
Correct again! That is the ruling the R&D gave us.
-
I play a 3 dark Blastoise and 1 base set Blastoise in my deck. Is this smart?(keep in mind dark Blastoise can do 70 damage with 4 energy)
If it works for you, then go for it. I play 3 Blastoise and 1 Dark Blastoise so I can use Raindance more often.
-
Well, since it seems to be a bit of a lull, I think I may have missed the answer to this one earlier: If a Dark Arbok uses Stare to KO a Dark Gyarados, does Final Beam kick in, or not (because of Stare’s Power-canceling aspect)? Answer? No it does not, Stare stops Pokémon Powers from working for the next turn. The Final Beam is canceled.
-
Can I have an English dark Blastoise on the side while having a water energy with dark Blastoise written on it in my deck and play it in a tournament?
No, you’ll have to use the Dark Blastoise.
-
Similarly, what happens if a Dark Arbok Stares at a Kabuto? Will Kabuto Armor kick in?
Pokémon powers will be applied before any effects of attacks are applied, so in this case, Kabuto’s Armor will kick in.
-
And, since I’m looking through my folder, thinking about questions to ask, what about staring at a Fossil Haunter? Would Transparency kick in?
I’m going to say yes based on my previous answer. However, I know you’ll all want an official answer so we’ll check on this with R&D.
-
Will you be able to use Blastoise’s Pokémon Power: Rain Dance with Rainbow Energy if you change it to Water Energy?
No, it does NOT count as all basic energy when it is in your hand, only when Rainbow Energy is in play.
-
I play 4 Electabuzz, 3 Scyther, 2 Ditto, and 3 Hitmonchan. is this good?
Sounds pretty good, what’s the trainer mix though. That’s where the real strategy lies.
-
With jungle Scyther, if you do sword dance, then are gusted to the bench by your opponent, then either switch, retreat, or scoop up on your next turn, bringing back up Scyther, does sword dance still work, and do slash 60?
The effect of Swords Dance ends when Scyther is benched.
-
I have a movie Dragonite. Can I use the Pokémon Power with no cards in my deck, draw all the cards I can as the rulebook says (which is none), put a card onto my deck and never run out of cards?
No you can’t use Special Delivery if you have no cards in your deck. Drawing a card assumes that there is a card available in your deck to draw from.
-
Wait a minute, for Final Beam, you said the Star would not be activated. but Kabuto will? How’s that?
Slow down, R&D are checking these answers for us. Since Kabuto’s Armor triggers from combat damage and Final Beam triggers when it is knocked out, they activate at different times. BUT hold onto these questions until we get an official answer.
-
Does Aerodactyl stop Rocket Magikarp from using the attack that makes it evolve itself?
No it does not.
-
If I put 2 double colorless on base set Charizard would I have to discard them? (knowing they don’t count as basic energies)?
Fire Spin requires that 2 Energy “cards” be discarded as a cost. One Double Colorless Energy card only counts as 1 card toward this cost (another Energy “card”).
-
When Smokescreen stops an attack, does it stop all effects of the attack, even those that might be done to the attacking Pokémon?
Yes, it stops all effects.
-
I have 3 Porygons in a deck, including 1 Japanese one. Can I use the deck, using a scanned picture of one of the American ones as a translation (since I have no more actual American Porygons?)
Technically no, you must have a copy of the English card available at all times for viewing (if it’s in your deck it might not be up yet).
-
If I have a Ditto with 3 dc energy attached as active and the defending card is a base 1 Blastoise, can I do Hydro Pump for 60 or do I need water energy?
All energy attached to Ditto can count as whatever basic energy type you want. You can have the 3 DCE counts as 6 water energy and Hydro Pump for 60.
-
While playing Pokémon if your hand goes empty, do you draw 7 more cards or just use the ones you draw every turn?
Just the one you draw every turn.
-
What about cards that do not state when the effect ends? Like Fossil Magmar’s smokescreen? I think for only one turn (the opponents next turn), but some stupid apprentice people say it lasts until Magmar is benched!
The effect says tries to attack during your opponent’s next turn, so it only works on the next turn after you use the attack.
-
How would you go about attacking when the opponent is paralyzed? Asleep?
Do you mean when your Pokémon is Asleep or Paralyzed? Either bench, heal, or evolve your Pokémon so you can attack (or use Scoop Up), or you have to wait until next turn (and hopefully not still be asleep).
-
If Ditto is copying a Pokémon with a PKMN Power, does Ditto copy the power as well as the moves?
Yes.
-
Why do some attacks state “Any other effects that would happen after applying Weakness and Resistance still happen”? What effects happen after applying weakness and resistance?
They mean any other attack effects like Poison or Confusion or effects like Agility or Smokescreen.
-
Could I damage swap a damage counters to a Clefairy doll, since it says, “Clefairy Doll doesn’t count as a knocked out Pokémon”?
Yes, you could. When Clefairy Doll is in play it counts as a basic Pokémon.
-
If a ditto is copying another Pokémon (like Mr. Mime) does Ditto also copy the Pokémon Power (like Invisible Wall?)
That’s right.
-
Does Dark Charizard still have too flip for all of his energies when u do continues fireball? After you already KO’d the defending Pokémon?
Yes, D. Charizard will have to finish flipping coins even after enough damage has been done to the defending Pokémon.
-
Can Venusaur put other energies on fire Pokémon?
Only other grass energy.
-
Why are Mulligan Mewtwo decks horrible?
They are unimaginative and exploit inexperienced players.
-
Shouldn’t Dark Golbat and Dark Gyarados’s Poke Powers read “DO NOT APPLY weakness and resistance?”
I don’t think so. That’s how they translated.
-
If Porygon does conversion 1 on a basic Pokémon then u evolves would conversion 1 still be in affect? And will it still be if u retreat?
No, it won’t be in effect any longer if you evolve that Pokémon.
-
If you had two base set Magmas in a deck and no other fire Pokémon what is the best amount of fire energy to have in the deck?
About 40 % give or take a few depending on the remainder of your deck
-
If your bench is full and you wish to retreat your active Pokémon, can you do so? Is it a switch, or is the fact the bench is full prevent the retreat?
It’s basically a switch, so you can do that.
-
Does the Level 7 Promo Eevee’s Pokémon power, Chain Reaction (as described in the most recent TopDeck), also bypass the “wait one turn” rule of evolution, as Magikarp’s Rapid Evolution does? For example, on my turn, may I play a Lv. 7 Eevee to my bench, then evolve a pre-existing Pokémon, and use said Eevee’s Power to evolve him the same turn he was played?
Hey Kori, you missed the opening announcements. R&D ruled last week that Magickarp does NOT ignore the wait one turn to evolve. They changed the ruling, so Eevee wouldn’t either.
-
Level 7 Promo Eevee’s Pokémon Power, Chain Reaction, states that “This power can only be used when a Pokémon evolves.” Since it doesn’t specify, does this mean you may also use this power during your opponent’s turn, if he or she evolves one of their Pokémon?
Good question, we will check that but my understanding is that it can only be used on your turn. Good catch though. We will verify this answer for you guys and tell you next week,
-
Swords dance: Is it stopped when the opponent?
Umm. When your opponent what? If your Pokémon is benched or Evolved that effect ends.
-
If you use dark Vileplumes petal whirlwind and get 1 heads is Vileplume confused?
No, you have to get 2 heads or more for it to be confused.
-
What is the point of using devolution spray? I mean, its the worst full heal I have ever seen!
Use it to ‘turn off’ restrictive Pokémon powers that YOU want to get around.
-
You could also devolve to a less expensive (energy wise) version of your Pokémon for attacks or retreat costs.
For those x-magic players: It’s like Twiddle and Winter Orb.
-
What is the best way to Ko a Blastoise?
He has a Weakness to lightning so try a lightning Pokémon.
-
The rocket does Poison gas but puts Pokémon to sleep what’s with that?
Already answered this question, Team Rocket did it.
-
If you Scyther do a Sword Dance, and then you are paralyzed or sleeped, do you have to start the sword dance all over again? I think that may have been the question?
If you sleep through the next turn, than yes. If you wake up right away than no.
-
If I have 2 of the same Pokémon in play that have a Pokémon power, can I use that power twice?
Sure, depends on the particular power though.
-
If someone wanted to use the English / Japanese “Exeggutor” card, would it be legal to use, since it is partially in English (if they were using colored deck protectors to hide the backs)?
Yes.
-
If you put someone asleep, do you flip RIGHT after the first turn?
Yes, you would.
-
Hey, here me out, what would you think of a deck with Dodrio, Tauros, and other cards with rage into a damage swap deck, I have tried forever and never could get the right deck I wanted!
Hmmm, I would call it Raindance food.
-
You said in the announcements that if Clefairy/Clefable metronome the Quick Evolution then they can evolve into Gyradose or Dark Gyradose. If you use de-evolution beam on it, would it revert back to Clefairy/Clefable?
Yes.
-
Ditto copies all effects of the defending Pokémon too?
Yes it does.
-
Back to the multiple Pokémon power questions, what powers wouldn’t B useable twice, or more for that matter?
Well it depends on the powers, if you had two Muks, then only one power is necessary.
-
If you use Devolution Spray on a Stage 2 Pokémon do you have the choice to go back to either the Stage 1 or Basic card, assuming you didn’t use a Breeder?
You would.
-
Does Mr. Mime’s invisible wall prevent all damage 30 or more, or does it prevent the 30 or more damage above 20, therefore taking 20 points?
If the attack does 30 or more points, then no damage is done (as long as the power still works).
-
Noticed in past chat transcripts a question that didn’t look like it was answered fully: does a plus power work with Hitmonlee’s stretch kick attack?
It does not, Pluspower only adds to the total if the attack does damage to the DEFENDING Pokémon only.
-
Here’s a Question for pat and all trainers; if you play Dodrios Retreat aid, if the Pokémon has no retreat cost do you get to pick energy from your discard pile?
Nope. Nice try though.
-
Can you use Rattata’s Pokémon power trickery if you have no deck remaining?
No, Ratatta’s Power says: “switch”
-
Can a dark stage 2 Pokémon evolve from a regular stage 1 Pokémon?
No it can’t. You start with a basic (non-dark Pokémon as there are no Dark basic Pokémon). When you evolve to a Stage 1 that is when you choose Dark or Non-Dark. When you evolve to Stage 2 it must follow the stage 1 type. Of course if you use Pokémon Breeder then you skip Stage
-
I have a mono-fire deck with no rares. My problem is that they are all weak to water and I usually lose to good rain dance decks. My question is: How can I beat a Rain-Dance deck, without adding any rares? Please help me, I have a awesome deck it’s record so far is 10-2.
Good question, you could use trainer cards like Gust of Wind and Energy Removal to keep him off balance. Unfortunately the Rain Dance deck is hard to beat without using some rare cards like dark Vileplume (but not impossible).
-
If I had 4 Dodrios out could I retreat anyone for free?
Just about, unless something else is raising the retreat cost.
-
If Aerodactyl is Confused and hurts itself, would it take damage or not?
Nope. Of course if Porygon used Conversion on it.
-
I do not understand the rainbow energy can you explain it?
It counts as all basic Energy types when it is attached to a Pokémon. If you play it from your hand and attach it to a Pokémon, it does 10 damage to the Pokémon you attach it to.
-
Can I evolve a Dratini from the rocket set into a Dragonair from the first set of Pokémon?
Yes.
-
If the defending Pokémon has a status change (like poison) but and attack requires you to flip to see if the same condition is afflicted, do you still have to flip? (Eg - Weedle’s poison sting reads "flip a coin. If heads, the defending Pokémon is no?
Yes, you have to though I can understand why you would consider it redundant.

I am trying to make a fighting deck which would be my dream deck and could possible beat psychic, which is its weakness, but I can’t find the proper cards?
Sorry but each energy type has a weakness and fighting has psychic. Good luck.

Hello! I’m a beginner and I like to know how exactly the Sleep & Poison works: Sleep; flip a coin after the owner of the asleep Pokémon turn or after every turn; same for the poison; one damage after the owner turn or after every turn?
After each player’s turn including the one in which a Pokémon was put to Sleep, you flip a coin. If heads, your Pokémon is awake and can act normally. If tails, it is still Asleep and cannot Attack or Retreat.
For Poison, your Pokémon takes 10 damage after each turn (including the turn in which it was Poisoned). This lasts until your Pokémon is knocked out, benched, or evolved.
-
I don’t know if this question has already been asked because I just got here, but anyways, here goes. Say I have a Drowzee (from Team Rocket on my bench) with a Snorlax active. If I use Long-Distance Hypnosis and the flip is tails, will my Snorlax be put to sleep?
Nope, unless Snorlax’s Pokémon power isn’t working for some reason (like Muk is in play), he will not be put to sleep.
-
If an attack knocks out Dark Gyrados, but also Paralyzes Dark Gyrados on a coin flip, does Dark Gyrados’s Final Beam work?
Yes it does as being Knocked out is immediate and attack effects don’t happen until the end of the turn, so Gyarados would be Knocked out BEFORE he was paralyzed.
-
If I used Ditto to copy Grimer and Grimer evolved to Muk will Ditto evolve too, if so if Muk uses toxic gas will my Ditto be useless?
Yes Ditto would transform into Muk but then would revert to Ditto.
-
If you use Gambler with no other cards in your hand, do you have to shuffle your deck?
Yes you would still have to shuffle your deck.
-
If my Pokémon fell asleep and it wakes up next turn will it be able to attack on that turn or the next?
You flip at the end of each player’s turn. If it wakes up after the other players turn, BEFORE yours then it would act normal on your turn.
-
What comes first weakness or resistance when you attack?
You calculate Weakness first, and then Resistance.
-
On Computer Error, can you draw 0 cards? Also, do you declare how many you are drawing, then draw, or can you stop before 5?
Nope you must declare from 1 to 5 cards, and then draw that many.
-
If I use Charizard’s Energy Burn Pokémon Power and turn a water energy into a fire energy, can I use TR Charmander’s power to move that energy onto it?
Sure!
-
If you knock out a Dark Gyarados, with an attack that can paralyze, does Final Beam stop working because Dark Gyarados is paralyzed as he goes to the discard pile?
Nope! I answered this one last week. The damage is calculated first, which immediately knocks out Dark Gyarados. Appropriate Pokémon Powers are done BEFORE attack effects are done.
-
If your Clefairy/Clefable is facing a Dark Charizard, and you Metronome Continuous Fireball, I assume that you would actually have to have Fire Energy attached in order to do a coin flip. Do you need 2 Energy (Dark Charizard requires 2, but Clefable only needs 1 to use Metronome) or can you do the attack with only 1? Do you have to discard the Fire Energy if you get heads and do damage to your opponent?
Correct you would need fire energy for the effect of the attack (like Moltres’s Wyldfire). You could do the attack with just one fire energy though as per Metrome ignoring the Requirements of an attack. And yes, you would still have to discard energy for each heads flipped. This is NOT a requirement but an effect of the attack so Metronome does NOT ignore it.
-
I’m not sure if you can answer this, but if promo Eevee evolves, can you use it’s power to evolve it to a different evolution?
Good questions, I will check R&D to verify but I would imagine that that would not work. Since Eevee would already be another Pokémon (it evolved) and the power states that you attach the pulled evolution card to Eevee that is no longer in play.
-
If you use Gust of Wind Trainer (or Pidgey’s attack) and the opponent has no benched Pokémon, what is the result?
Nothing.
-
When you flip tails with dark Raichu for the first time, do you still do the damage?
Sure!
-
Is it true that you can’t evolve a dark stage 2 from a dark stage one?
That is not true, that is how it works.
-
If you lay a DCE on Charizard, will the DCE turn into 2 fire energies or 1 fire energy?
If you use Energy Burn, it would count as 2 Fire energy.
-
Regarding Dark Wartortle, when a Pokémon like Kangaskahn does 80 damage to Dark Wartortle while it used Reflecting Shell attack, will Dark Wartortle do 80 damage back or only 60 since that is it’s max HP?
It would do 80. It copies the amount of damage done, not damage taken.
-
With Charizard’s attack, it says discard 2 energy CARDS! So if you had 2 double colorless, and you used energy burn, you’d have to discard them both, right (both double colorlessness)?
Key-wreckt.
-
Please make sure everyone here knows that if a Mr. Mime got paralyzed, his power would still be off until his next turn BEGINS, therefor an opponents Pokémon would be able to do 30 more damage.
That is right.
-
Your active is confused, and your opponent attacks with Smokescreen. Then you try to attack. Rulebook says Smokescreen flip is done before Confusion flip. So if Smokescreen flip is tails, is Confusion flip still done?
Yes it is.
-
When you use computer error is your opponent still able to attack?
On his turn, sure.
-
Is it possible to evolve Eevee into Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon in a game?
The same Eevee? I suppose so if you devolve it or scoop it up enough times.
-
With the new Devolution Spray ruling… can I evolve something and then devolve it on the same turn (for what little good that may do)?
Nope, Devolving COUNTS as evolving. You can only evolve a particular Pokémon once per turn. So you CANNOT use Devolution Spray on a Pokémon you evolved this turn.
-
In TR set does a stage 2 Dark Pokémon have to evolve from a dark Pokémon or can I put it on a plain one.
It has top evolve from a Dark Stage 1 Pokémon (unless you use Breeder of course).
-
Is it true that you can’t evolve a Dark stage 2 card from a regular stage 1 card?
Right.
-
Wait a sec – Mr. Mime gets paralyzed, but he’d unparalyze before the attacker could attack a second time – so they couldn’t hit him while the power is off!
Yeah! That’s right! Darn that Mike and his wrong answers! Let’s get him!
-
Wouldn’t it be cheating to include 4 comp? Errors, 4 item finders, 4 comp. Searches, and 4 gamblers in a deck? Because you could deck the other person’s deck by just doing comp. Error for 4 turns, then doing item finders to find those 4 and do it again, and then gamble all the cards back into your deck. Wouldn’t that be cheating?
Nope, not cheating, just another way to try and win.
-
Is it possible to play six types of energy in one deck and win?
Well it is possible but I might have some swamp land in Florida to sell you too.
-
If we have four Mews in a deck can we have four Japanese counterparts like Myuu?
Nope. 4 of the same name only max.
-
Is Dark Dugtrio’s Pokémon Power, Sinkhole, cumulative or not? (I like the idea of having a chance of doing 80 damage when my opponent retreats.)"
They are cumulative.
-
If I use devolution spray do I remove damage?
Nope.
-
We had a discussion recently on “card memory.” Specifically, does Ditto “reset” itself when it retreats to the bench? For example, if he was opposite a Gengar, could Ditto use Curse while Active, retreat to the Bench somehow (thereby “resetting” himself?), then come back up again and Curse once more? I’d say no, but I figured it better to ask just in case.
Well, Ditto turns into a new Gengar in this case. He has no memory of being one before and so you could use the Curse again.
-
With computer Error card does your opponent *have to* draw 5 cards when you play it?
Nope, he chooses how many to draw up to 5 cards.
-
Is there a minimum requirement of how many basic Pokémon must be in your deck? Also, questions about Clefairy doll. What happens if your hand only includes Clefairy Doll (no basic Pokémon)? Do I have the option of playing him face down? Must I play him?
There is no minimum but Clefairy Doll does NOT count as a basic Pokémon in your hand (it is a trainer card). If you don’t have another basic Pokémon then you MUST mulligan.
-
Are you SURE about the “new Gengar” thing? Because if that’s the case, there may very well be some really broken combos out there that could be done with Ditto being able to swap in and out for free (say, with Dodrio on the Bench). Theoretically, that would allow you to use any Opponent’s “once per turn” Power and infinite number of times.
Sure as long as you could continually retreat Ditto. It does seem sort of broken doesn’t it? I will talk with R&D on this one. I guess I would be careful playing Gengar now huh?
-
Question regarding the “devolution” rule. Does this mean also when you are devolved by Mew that you can not re evolve immediately?
Yes. Although that question is kinda moot because if you use Mew’s attack to do that you wouldn’t be able to evolve anyway. And if you devolved your opponent’s Pokémon they could still re-evolve it on their turn.
-
Regarding Confusion & Smokescreen (#57). Smokescreen says “If tails, that attack does nothing.” So why could the Confusion flip be necessary?
Because that attack may result with something that would not be prevented by Smokescreen, like discarding energy cards.
-
Since the mulligan rule says you can draw up to 2 cards on a mulligan, and you can draw 0 cards; can’t you draw 0 cards on Computer Error?
Yea, I suppose. Why?
-
I don’t quite understand it when you said if you were de-evolved by mew you couldn’t evolve straight away. The turn would be over; there is no way you could evolve right away anyway?
Right! That’s what I said. Right that’s what I said in my follow up.
-
What will happen if two person use Ditto as their active Pokémon at the same time?
Not a darned thing.
-
What I know what Blastoise’s power does but I think I am using it incorrectly, how do I use the power correctly?
Raindance allows you to play Water Energy from your hand on any one of your Water Pokémon. One energy at a time, but as many as you want per turn.
-
Can I play an original Stage 2 card on a dark card? (Example: Machamp on Dark Machamp)?
No, only Dark evolutions on Dark cards.
-
Will you please get the rulebook and read what it says about parlays? I remember seeing that it didn’t say after your next turn", but something like “Until the end of your opponents next turn”
We did read it. You are misinterpreting it. I paralyze you Pokémon on MY TURN. On YOUR TURN its paralyzed, and at the end of YOUR turn it is UNPARALYZED. Back on MY TURN, it is NOT PARALYZED, comprendez?
-
If I have 2 Dark Dugtrios in play, if my opponent retreats, does that mean he takes 40 damage?
It means he flips 2 coins, his retreating Pokémon takes 20 damage for each tails he flips.
-
If I have a Ditto active and my opponents Pokémon is either KOed or retreats, does Ditto revert back to itself or does it automatically change to the new Pokémon?
Unless your Ditto is paralyzed, confused, or asleep, it would automatically transform into the new active Pokémon its facing.
-
What did you mean when I asked about what Rain Dance does? I was thinking more like the lines of this… “How many energies can you play on Blastoise a turn?”
You can use the power as often as you want before you attack on your turn. So you could attach as much water energy to water Pokémon as you have in your hand in one turn if you want.
-
If you flip tails on Sinkhole and it does 20 damage to your Pokémon, does your Pokémon still retreat?
Sure.
-
Can I evolve my Kadbra to Dark Kadabra?
Nope.
-
TR Charmander and its Pokémon power. Can I use a benched Pokémon Charmander’s energy to the active Charmander and move another fire energy from a different Pokémon on my bench for the active Pokémon 's power in the same turn?
Nope, TR Charmander’s power can only move 1 fire energy to ITSELF (not to another Charmander).
-
If I have a Chansey with 110 damage on it, then I use a scoop up will it be fully healed?
Chansey would be returned to your hand. When you play him again he’ll have the full 120 HP.
-
I say WOTC should change the rules to how ever many cards in a deck is 60, individual of 4 should stay, but any how can u boost it up to 70 cards? I need to add important cards in my deck and cant take any others out?
Tough, you’ll have to cut some out of your deck.
-
If I can attack (I have an active Pokémon with enough energy card) but I don’t want to attack, can I pass the turn or I must attack?
You can pass if you want.
-
What if I don’t wanna use Aerodactyle’s power huh?
You don’t have a choice, if Aerodactyl is in play and its power is active, it’s active.
-
If your opponents Muk is confused, and your Ditto transforms into a Muk, if it also copies Toxic Gas, does that mean ditto’s transform will be canceled and it will transform back to ditto?
The end result is that Ditto is Ditto, not Muk.
-
Can you use a Pokémon breeder on a basic Pokémon like Charmander to evolve it into dark Charizard?
Sure
-
With Blastoises Rain Dance, are you allowed to attach three or more energies to any Pokémon in the same turn?
Sure, as long as you have that much energy in your hand already.
-
How many cards do I draw without any cards in my hand when I use professor oak?
umm 7
-
Can you attach more than one Plus Power to a Pokémon? 2,3,4?
Well you can have up to 4 in your deck, so if you had all 4 in your hand you could use them all at once yes.
-
Are you allowed to mix up what you pick up with Nightly Garbage Run?
Yes you are.
-
What is the evolve form of gloom not a Vilepleme cause I heard that its in the hundreds
Sorry but it is Vileplume.
-
Does Dark Golbat’s Pokémon Power do 10 damage to a Pokémon if that Pokémon has a Defender on it? Defender stops damage from ATTACKS, but that’s a Pokémon Power?
Yes, because Defender stops damage only from attacks. You’ve got the right idea.
-
If you have out Clefairy and opponent Moltres can you use wildfire and discard their whole deck?
Not unless you can discard enough fire energy from Clefairy. You need to do so, because that ability of Moltres is an option.
-
A couple weeks ago, you said that if Clefairy or Clefable Metronomed Rapid Evolution, that you could evolve Clefairy/Clefable into Gyrados or Dark Gyrados. What if Ditto uses Rapid Evolution? Would Ditto evolve into Gyrados/Dark Gyrados?
No, unfortunately, Ditto actually says on it: Ditto can’t evolve.
-
If you use dark Alakazam’s teleport blast do you have a choice to switch? Remember it says: you MAY switch?
Yes, you do.
-
If I used Swords Dance with Scyther and it got knocked out or benched on my opponents turn, if I have another one will it do 60 damage with slash?
No, Swords Dance is referring to _that_ Scyther; if he retreats or is knocked out, no double Slash attack.
-
Is the MR Yuk deck way too weak to psychic?
I’ll let Galen answer that one. [Galen] Which Mr. Yuk are you speaking of, the one I made, or the one Boss Mike altered? Mr. Yuk is most weak to fire…it would hold it’s own against a psychic I think.
-
Do you have a final ruling on ditto’s “card memory”?
You mean like when Ditto’s copying a Clefairy Doll and gets knocked out? If so, in that situation the player who knocked out the Ditto would _not_ draw a prize card.
-
Energy that have been Burned by Charizard’s Pokémon Power are considered to be Fire Energy until the end of the turn. Once burned, do they still stay that way until the end of the turn if they are removed from Charizard (say, by TR Charmander’s Gather Fire PP)?
Well, I believe that would be possible, but I’ll check on that one.
-
Similarly, with regard to Energy Burn, if you accidentally put Charizard to Sleep (say, as a result of a failed Long Distance Hypnosis coin flip), do the Energy Burned Energies revert to their original types, or do they still remains Fire Energy until the end of the turn?
They would remain Fire Energy until the end of the turn.
-
For clarification from last week: with Computer Error, is it correct that you have to state how many cards you are going to draw before doing so, and also, that you may draw 0 cards if you wish?
I don’t think that’s a rule, but it’s certainly the polite way to play.
-
Or, to make it even clearer for those confused with the entire Devo Beam, Devo Spray, Rapid Evolution, Breeder, etc. Stuff out there: would it be correct to say that, simply, you may change the “evolution level” (Basic, Stage 1, or Stage 2) of any particular Pokémon only ONCE per turn, regardless of the method used?
That sounds reasonable, yes.
-
But on Ditto, it says that it copies ALL text on the opposing card. So wouldn’t Ditto copy the line of text which says that you evolve it into Gyrados/Dark Gyrados?
Ditto will still know it’s own card text though, and that says: Ditto can’t evolve.
-
On Pokémon powers, do you need to say them every turn like an attack, or do you only say them once and they keep working until that Pokémon is unable to use it?
You don’t absolutely need to say them, but it is proper game etiquette I think.
-
Last week a question was asked about Ditto opposite Gengar, with Ditto repeatedly retreating, becoming active, and doing Curse multiple times on the same turn. You guys said you would check and see if that was OK. Is it?
I just checked and they answered in the affirmative for now, but they reserve the right to change that answer later. How’s that for vague? I would go ahead and play it like that for now.
-
Can I have four base set Charmanders and four-team rocket Charmanders in a deck?
No, because they both have the name Charmander. You’re limited to only four of any particular card.
-
If I attach a pluspower to a paralyzed Scyther, then use a switch, then make my Scyther the active again, will the plus power still be there?
My question to you is why don’t you do that before you attach the plus power? Then you won’t have to worry about it?
-
If TR Porygon converts Ditto’s weakness (say, to grass), then retreats and is replaced by a Scyther, is the Ditto still weak to grass?
Yes.
-
Do you HAVE to have a basic Pokémon in your deck?
Yup…otherwise you wouldn’t be able to start the game.
-
Can you just play a card like Haunter, With out playing Gastly>?< because on the basic Haunter it doesn’t say Put Haunter on The Stage 1 Cards?
No, you have to start with Gastly. No you cannot…the rule with that is that you cannot have more than 4 of the same kind of cards (excluding basic energy of course) with the same name, both Charmanders have the same name on the card. Therefore that would be like having 8 which is not allowed. It’s all in the name.
-
Suppose my active Pokémon is asleep. My opponent’s turn ends. I draw a card, then realize that I didn’t flip to see if I wake up. Can I still flip? Or did I forfeit the opportunity to flip because I drew a card first?
Yes, you can still flip.
-
Your opponent Mulligans and you draw 2 more cards, one of which is a basic Pokémon. Can you make that Pokémon your starting active Pokémon, or can you only start with one from the original 7 cards you were dealt?
Since you haven’t laid down the cards yet for play…it is still technically part of your turn…so the answer is yes.
-
Can you evolve a base set Charizard on a Dark Charmelion?
No you can’t…once you go to the dark evolutions, the next forward evolution must be the Dark Charizard.
-
If I were building a deck, could I have 4 Dark _ and four-base/jungle/fossil __? I have been told both yes and no.
Yes you could, my friend.
-
Say Ditto is copying an Abra, and I attach a pluspower to my Abra, then use Psyshock, then it becomes paralyzed, would the Ditto still be alive?
If Ditto’s copying a Base Set Abra, he’ll be knocked out by that attack.
-
If you attached a PlusPower to a Pokémon (for this, Scyther) and then Scoop Upped it (yes, a very dumb person), what would happen to the PlusPower?
It goes to your discard pile.
-
If I use Scyther’s swords dance and on my next turn I get paralyzed asleep or confuse but I full heal, will I be able to use the slash attack for 60?
Yes.
-
If you have 2 Jungle Mankeys in play, can you use their Pokémon Powers (Peek) together, to look at the top 2 cards in your deck, or would they just let you look at the top card twice.
You could only look at the top card twice.
-
Referring to the Ditto on Porygon. If Ditto’s Weakness were changed to Grass, When Scyther gets bringed, Wouldn’t Ditto’s Weakness be changed into Fire?
Nope, Ditto is still the active Pokémon and Conversion won’t end until the converted Pokémon is benched. We’ll double check on this one too, I understand that it’s kind of confusing.
-
Can you have only 1 basic Pokémon in your deck?
You could…but your opponents would have a field day with you unless you got a very lucky draw. Mulligans…bad…for you.
-
Can you retreat with a full bench?
Yes, you’ll just exchange your active with a benched Pokémon.
-
If your Mr.Mime is paralyzed then on your opponent’s turn can he knock it out with 40 damage, Or does it become unparalyzed and the Pokémon Power is back on?
He would get knocked out because his Pokémon power is ineffective when Mr. Mime is paralyzed
-
I’m planning on making a Haymaker Deck, What cards do you recommend I insert into my new deck?
Here’s the basic Pokémon necessary for Haymaker decks: 4 Scythers, 4 Hitmochans. From there, trainers customize according to what other decks are popular in their area. I’ve used Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff before, but now I use Electabuzz and Pincer.
-
Can Rocket Magikarp’s Rapid Evolution be used on the first turn it is put down, by placing 3 energy with Rain Dance?
No, Rapid Evolution still counts as evolving, so you can’t do it the first turn you put down Magikarp.
-
Does Ditto’s HP stay the same or change to the defending Pokémon’s HP, and does resistance and weakness change?
Weakness/resistance changes, so does the HP when Ditto becomes another Pokémon
-
Does Ditto’s attack copy the effects like paralyzing, asleep etc?
If the attack of the Pokémon he’s copying has those effects, so will Ditto.
-
If you use a plus power then Prof. Oak, would the then ready to attack, would the plus Power still be there? Or, would you have to discard it if you attached it to you active, then professor Oaked, then attacked?
If the active Pokémon that you attached Plus Power to is still your active after your Oak, it will still be in effect.
-
If you go first, are you allowed to win the game before your opponent has a chance to have a turn?
Yes I suppose so.
-
In the TR Meowth, its attack says “don’t apply weakness and resistance for this attack”. Why put this text in when Meowth is a colorless Pokémon?
It’s possible that a card that we expect to print in the future may effect the type of a Pokémon in play.
-
Mr. Mime would NOT be knocked Invisible Wall would be back on, since Mime is no longer paralyzed after its players turn!
Yeah. You are right I think I misread the question my apologies.
-
Does my serious Fossil still count as a basic Pokémon when in the discard pile?
No.
-
Can you retreat if your Pokémon is poisoned and asleep?
You can’t retreat, but you can play switch.
-
My opponent plays a Challenge, and I accept. I place a Charmander on my bench. He ends turn. It is now my turn. Can I evolve Charmander into Charmeleon, or do I have to wait until my NEXT turn to evolve?
You can evolve Charmander because he wasn’t played -that- turn.
-
I’m trying to make a Wigglytuff deck and I need to know what Pokémon are good for backup. Can you help me?
Anything, that allows you to get more Pokémon, on your bench.
-
Can you evolve a dark Charmeleon into a Charizard?
Nope.
-
If you use a plus power on an attack that does 0 damage, will it do 10 damage? Like for example, Kangaskhan’s fetch will it do 10 damage with a plus power?
No, Plus Power will only add 10, if damage is done. Fetch doesn’t do damage.
-
Last week it was ruled, that if Ditto is against a Pokémon that has a “once-per-turn” Pokémon Power. Say, Gengar – and Ditto rotates out to the bench and then back up, it can use that “once-per-turn” Pokémon Power a second time during the same turn (or more, if he continues to do so). If you used Gust of Wind to drop the opposing Gengar back to the opponent’s Bench, the then brought him back up again to the Active slot with another GoW, would Ditto now also be able to use that “once-per-turn” again?
R&D has said that benching Ditto in this situation would allow you to use Curse again, so I would imagine that the inverse is true as well. If you send the opponent’s Gengar back to the bench and then move him back up when Ditto’s still active, you could do Curse again.
-
If you have a Promo Eevee in play, and your opponent evolves up into an Aerodactly, how does that resolve? Since you can use Eevee’s Chain Reaction during your opponent’s turn if he evolves, can you use it “before” Aerodactyl’s Power goes into effect, or are you prevented from using Chain Reaction? Or, as I suspect, is it like Rapid Evolution in which Aerodactyl doesn’t enter into the equation since you’re not technically “playing” an evolution card?
You’re not technically ‘playing’ and evolution card with Eevee’s Chain Reaction.
-
Some attack text, such as Harden, Stiffen and Withdrawl, say that they prevent damage done on the opponent’s next turn, but do not reference, where the damage is coming from. Will these prove effective against things such as a failed coin flip from Digger, which does 10 damage to the losing Pokémon?
So it means anything on the next turn of your opponent so yes it would prevent that damage.
-
Last week, you said that Energy Burned Energies remain as such even if Charizard is put to Sleep that same turn (say, as the result of a failed Long Distance Hypnosis coin flip). However, looking back through some previous rulings, you said a month or two ago that if Charizard is paralyzed, etc. then the energies revert to their normal type. Which is correct?
The energies will remain Fire energies until the end of the turn, even if Charizard is put to sleep. Certainly, some of our rulings may change as R&D corrects or reverses older rulings.
-
Scenario: you have an Active Ditto with, say, 2 Fire, 2 Grass and 1 Water energy on him, and he is opposite a Dark Charizard. He could do Continuous Fireball and flip five times, since all energies attached to Ditto count as all types (including Fire). However, for each heads he gets, he has to discard a Fire Energy. So let’s say he gets three heads out of the five flips – does he have to discard the two Fire Energies first, and then one of the others, or can he discard the two Grass and 1 Water instead? Or do you state “which” energy card you are flipping for when you flip, and discard that specific one when and if it’s heads?
Because Ditto’s energies count as any type when they are attached to him…you could choose which energies you discard by the amount of heads you flipped
-
If you attach a plus power to Scyther and then retreat for Hitmonchan and do jab, will Hitmonchan do 30 instead of 20?
Plus Power will stay attached to the Pokémon you put it on. It will not be in effect for the Hitmochan.
-
You mentioned the ruling with Plus Power; would the same apply to other attached cards, such as Defender?
The correct interpretation is that it is attached to the Pokémon you put it on not necessarily attached to the active slot per se. Sorry for the mistake guys I goofed.
-
Can Ditto change to any Mysterious Fossil or Clefairy doll. If so, is the ability copied?
Ditto can copy either of those cards, but since Ditto can’t evolve, you won’t be able to use those cards to their full ability.
-
Say, just a clarification for the record: ALL of Ditto’s abilities related to Transform are functional ONLY when he Active, including the “Rainbow” effect of attached energies, correct?
As far as I know, yes.
-
Concerning Rainbow Energy, the card states that when Rainbow Energy comes into play it deals 10 damage to the Pokémon it’s attached to. Does this 10 damage take place the one time it comes into play, or take place every turn?
No you just take 10 damage when it comes from your hand and you put it on…it does no damage after words
-
Just for clarification - If I use Mew’s De-evolution beam on my turn against my opponents active Pokémon, can he re-evolve it on his turn? I don’t see why he can’t as his turn is a different turn than the turn I did de-evolution beam on.
Yeah totally you could evolve him on your turn.
-
If Dark Charizard is confused and tries to attack with Continuous Fireball, what is the exact procedure (assume the confusion flip is tails)?
Flip a coin to see if the attack is successful due to confusion. If it’s tails, do 20 damage to D.Charizard.
-
Is Digger’s damage considered an “attack”? (If Haunter is damaged by Digger, does Haunter’s Transparency require another flip? Will Defender protect against damage caused by Digger?)
No.
-
Concerning Clefable’s Metronome, can I metronome Dark Charmeleon’s Fireball attack when I have energy other than Fire on Clefable?
No.
-
What is a good number of Gyarados’s to have in a deck?
I would say 2 or 3 personally.
-
Can you put more than 5 Pokémon on your bench by using the Challenge! card since it clearly says you can pick any amount of Pokémon?
No because you only have five spaces on your bench.
-
Concerning Clefable’s Metronome once again this time in relation to Hydro Pump (or similar attacks), since the initial energy is considering to cover the costs for the attack, if I have 2 Water Energies in excess of that first energy, will the Hydro P?
Hydro pump specifies what kind of energy (water) you need to do excess damage so you would have to put extra (water) energy on Clefable in order to do more damage.
-
Does smokescreen carry over if the person retreats or dies on that turn? For example, If fossil Magmar kills Oddish and the opponent brings up Gloom, does the opponents still have to flip?
Smokescreen goes away, when the Pokémon affected retreats or dies or evolves so the upcoming gloom would not have to flip the smokescreen would not be in effect.
-
Do you have to flip for an attack like fetch if the attack doesn’t do any damage?
You mean if Kangaskhan is confused? Yes, you would.
-
When using Raichu’s agility attack it states that if heads Raichu will not receive damage until after the opponents turn. If Raichu is poisoned and then gets heads will he take damage from poison at the end of his turn?
Yes, Agility is referring to effects of attacks on Raichu during your opponent’s next turn.
-
Referring to the question regarding Ditto and “once-per-turn” Powers: if Ditto can use said powers multiple times in the same turn if the opponent is Gusted out and back, is it because Ditto “resets” himself somehow when he Transforms? If so, this seems at odds with status effects, which are not lost when Ditto Transforms into a new Pokémon. Unless I’m just missing something, along the line here.
No, Ditto doesn’t ‘reset’, but if he Transforms from Gengar to Ditto to Gengar, that second Gengar will be considered a ‘fresh’ one as far as the ‘once-per-turn’ use of Curse.
-
If I attach a plus power to Dark Wartortle, and use Mirror shell, and the defending Pokémon does 20 damage to Dark Wartortle, does Mirror Shell do 20 or 30 damage back?
No, the Plus Power will be removed at the end of your turn, so it won’t be in effect for the Mirror Move.
It will do 20.
-
When playing a rainbow Energy on a Pokémon, the 10 damage still occurs even if a Defender is played on that Pokémon, correct?
Defender states that it only defends against damage done by attacks since that is not an attack the damage would be done if the Rainbow was played out of the hand on to the Pokémon in question.
-
When playing a rainbow Energy on a Pokémon, will Mr. Mime’s Invisible Wall prevent that damage or not?
No it would not.
-
If you put defender on a Pokémon that has just been attacked by a Gastly with destiny bond will the defenders have any affect?
The defenders won’t have any effect because Destiny bond has no value to the damage it does it simply knocks out the defending Pokémon.
-
All my Dark Golbats say “Apply”, but it sounds like you have one that says “Don’t apply”. Please confirm for the masses. Thanks.
Both of the ones I could find here say, “Apply weakness and resistance.”
-
If there are 4 Snorlax on a bench, won’t that break the bench?
Probably, but not in the game, for the Bench is just the place where they wait to battle and not actually a real bench you might have a picnic on.
-
Can you play if most of your Pokémon cards use colorless attack if I don’t have any colorless cards?
Well colorless attacks mean that you can use any color of energy to activate that particular attack you don’t just need the double colorless energy to use those attacks.
-
Below dark Raichu’s left foot, there is a ‘blob’ of something - is this a error or damaged card? Or are they all like that?
I don’t know. I’d have to see the card.
-
My brother tried to play a deck with no Pokémon at the super trainer showdown qualifier, but the deck check lady said it was illegal. I see no where in the rules where it says its illegal and a master trainer told me on chat that it was ok too.
If you don’t have any Pokémon in your deck the game will never start. If you want to make a deck like that, you’re welcome to, but, be prepared to get kicked out of a lot of tournaments.
-
Is 0 damage still damage? My friend said that his Hitmonchan with 2 plus powers on it did 20 damage, but I said NO. What’s the ruling?
No, 0 is not damage. Hitmochan with 2 Plus Powers on it and no energy, will do 0 damage.
-
Can you have 3 Lv. 12 Pikachu and 2 Lv. 14 Pikachu in one deck?
Nope, you can only have 4 Pokémon of the same name in your deck it does not matter which set they came from or if they were different promo’s.
-
I think this was asked a couple of weeks ago, but if an attack that knocks out Dark Gyarados also paralyzes him, does he get to use his Final Beam or not?
No, he won’t get to because you’ll have to apply all the effects of the attack on D.Gyrados all at once. Since it will be paralyzed, it won’t be able to do Final Beam.
-
Does the ruling on Plus Powers staying with retreated Pokémon also apply to other attached cards, such as Defender?
As far as we know.
-
In a translation by Scrye, it says that Dark Blastoise does 10 damage for each extra energy and Rocket Diglett’s Dig Under does 20. In the actual American cards, it is the other way around. Was that a mistake, or was Scrye wrong?
Scrye and Inquest often have to submit their translations for the new sets before they see our cards, so it doesn’t surprise me that they may have been wrong or we may have changed the card’s wording.
-
How many energy cards should a good deck have?
Well, its whatever works best for you. I’ve played decks with anywhere from 7 to 35 energy cards. Usually 25-30 is a good place to start though.
-
If Clefaible uses it’s metronome attack against Moltre’s wildfire, would Clefairible be able to force an opponent to deck itself?
Not sure what you mean. If you Metronome Wildfire, you must still discard energy from Clefable in order to pay for the effect of the attack against your opponent.
-
Does Mr. Mime’s Pokémon power work from the bench?
Sure, but only for Mr. Mime of course.
-
Can you retreat if you have a full bench?
Sure, Retreating means you SWAP the active Pokémon for a Pokémon on your bench.
-
If you have a Scyther out as your active Pokémon, and you have a Blastoise on the bench then, you place TR Magikarp on the bench, and retreat Scyther for TR Magikarp and Raindance three water energies on TR Magikarp, can you do rapid evolution, and evolve Magikarp into base Gyrados, that turn since you just played TR Magikarp that turn?
Sorry, since Magickarp’s Raid Evolution counts as evolving, you CANNOT use it the same turn you played the Magickarp.
-
On Kabuto, it’s Pokémon power says: Kabuto Armor: Whenever an attack (even your own) does damage to Kabuto (after applying Weakness and Resistance), that attack only does half the damage to Kabuto (rounded down to the nearest 10). (Any other effects of attacks still happen.) This power stops working while Kabuto is asleep, confused, or paralyzed. My question is, Could you play this power in a damage swap deck? Like for example, could you swap a damage counter to kabuto and use Kabuto’s armor to take the damage counter off you, since damage done to Kabuto is rounded down, which would be 10/2=5 rounded down is zero. Could you do that?
Nope, Swap isn’t an attack. Kabuto’s Armor only helps against attacks.
-
If you use dark Machamp’s fling, do you get a prize?
Nope, nothing was Knocked out.
-
How many double colorless energy cards can you have in a deck?
4 since it is a non-basic energy card.
-
In an earlier chat, it was said that Geodude could stop flipping after it got the required damage to knock out the opposing Pokémon. But would this be the case against Mr. Mime (say if Mr. Mime has 20 damage and Geodude flipped 2 heads, wouldn’t it have to flip again?)
You are supposed to keep flipping until Geodude gets tails, regardless of whether it is enough to Knock out the other Pokémon or not.
-
If you accept a Challenge, can you select zero Pokémon to add to your bench? (Is 0 “any number”?)
Yup, zero (last I checked) is still a number.
-
Back to the old Venusaur/Ditto energy trans question. Since Ditto’s Pokémon power starts with the quote “If Ditto is your active Pokémon.” does that mean that energy attached to Ditto is energy of any type only when Ditto is active? If this is the case, Venusaur could only trans energy from an ACTIVE Ditto and not a benched one, (unless the energy is grass, of course).
Correct, that only works if Ditto is the active Pokémon.
-
Suppose Ditto has only a Double Colorless Energy and is opposite a Dark Charizard. If Ditto does Continuous Fireball, how many flips are made?
One, as you would only have 1 energy CARD (that gave 2 energy) attached to the Ditto.
-
If Clefable has 1 fire energy attached, and is opposite a Dark Charizard, and does Continuous Fireball and flips heads, must the fire energy be discarded?
Yup, it is NOT a requirement to do the attack so it is NOT ignored by Metronome.
-
When Ditto has one double colorless energy can it do an attack that needs 2 fire energy (or any other combination of energy cards)?
Yes it can.
-
If Scyther swords dances, and is benched (e.g. gust), does swords dance stay in effect?
The effect of Swords Dance is cancelled.
-
Does Areodactly Pokémon power mean that I can’t play anymore-evolved Pokémon or I cant evolve Pokémon?
Correct, unless Aerodactyl is paralyzed, asleep, or confused. Also the TR Magickarp Rapid Evolution attack could STILL be used.
-
If a Ditto copies a Dark Charizard and has a DCE and uses Repeating Fireball, and gets a heads, it says to discard Fire energy card, but Ditto doesn’t have any, and what if he gets two heads, how would that work?
First you would only flip 1 once since there is only 1 energy card. You would still have to discard the 1 DCE since it COUNTS as a Fire energy card that gives 2-fire energy (in this case).
-
If it counts as evolving can you still attack rapid evolution?
No, it is an attack itself (Rapid Evolution).
-
Can a Snorlax every be put to sleep, confused, paralyzed or poisoned? If yes, when would that occur? I had someone last week say its power is always on, even before your first turn.
Sure, there are ways to turn off Pokémon powers like while Muk is in play or the Goop Gas trainer card.
-
Can you put 4 Dark Alakazams in a deck and 4 regular Alakazams in a deck since they have different names?
Yes, you can.
-
If a Dark Jolteon lighting flashes and defender retreats do you still flip.
No, the effect of Lighting Flash will end if the defending Pokémon is benched.
-
Say I have 2 Drowzee’s from the Team Rocket set on my bench. Is it possible to use long-distance Hypnosis twice or just once on my turn?
You can use it twice (once for each Drowzee).
-
I found an error that could make Wigglytuff Decks invincible. The challenge card states that “each of you searches your deck for number of basic Pokémon cards and puts them face down onto the bench.” This could allow you to fill it with tons more than 5 benched Pokémon since normally the card beats the rule. It should have said “up to 5 Pokémon (enough to fill the bench of 5) can be placed down” not any. This makes Wigglytuff decks invincible! Another example of card beating rule is when Jigglypuff attacks a Snorlax. Although according to the rules it should be asleep, it is not because the card said so. Give this a lot of thought and tell me if it is legal? Don’t give me a short answer please. Please put some thought into your answer?
Ok, first of all you can only have 5 max Pokémon on your bench, period. That is a rule of the game and unchangeable. Just because it is NOT specifically written on the Challenge card does NOT mean you can break that rule. As for Jigglypuff attacking a Snorlax, as long as Snorlax’s Pokémon power is active; it will NOT put him to sleep. It will not. This is a break from tradition I know, but we think you can handle it.
-
What type of deck is most popular nowadays?
There are quite a few, Raindance, Haymaker, and Stall.
-
Mike, You said that you could not use TR Magikarp’s rapid evolution during the same turn that it is played because it counts as an evolution, but you also said that you CAN use it when an Aerodacytl is in play. If it’s an evolution, how can you use it then?
The Rapid Evolution Attack has you pulling an Evolution card from the deck and playing it. This is NOT the same as PLAYING an Evolution card, so Aerodactyl’s Prehistoric Power does NOT prevent you from being able to use this attack
-
If you have a D Gyarados in your deck, and use Metronome to copy TR Magkarps Rapid Evolution, could you evolve Clefable into Gyarados? The same thing with Ditto. (I’m doing a test on Pokeschool and I want to make sure I have the official answers)
Clefable you could do this with, but Ditto actually has text on it that says he can’t evolve.
-
Venusaur’s energy trans states that you may take ONE energy from ONE of your Pokémon to another as often as you like but not about 4 energies from one Pokémon and bring them all to Venasaur… Can you take more than one energy from ONE Pokémon and bring it all to another?
Yes, but you have to move them one at a time.
-
What are the proper cards to make a perfect rain dance (including rocket)?
There are many different Raindance decks and I don’t think any one deck is perfect. I suggest checking out Poke-websites for ideas.
-
The rulebook I got in my Team Rocket theme deck says (p. 11); “…neither player can evolve a Pokémon on the first turn.” Does that mean that if I go 2nd and start with a lone Squirtle, on my first turn I can evolve him to Wartotle?
No, that means that on either player’s 1st turn, that player may not evolve a Pokémon.
-
About rainbow energy (just a little clarification) it does 10 damage when initially attached, but not when moved around thanks to powers, right?
Correct. It only does the damage when it’s played from your hand.
-
About my Clefable evolving into Gyarados question, are you sure? Cause Metronome says to copy the attack, and Rapid Evolution says to put the card on Magikarp. So, it should be that you can not evolve Clefable into Gyarados?
Actually the rule is when you use Metronome and it copies an attack that self-references the Pokémon (like Magickarp’s Raid Evolution states Magickarp) then you replace te self reference with Clefable/Clefairy (whichever one you are using Metronome from). So, the Rapid Evolution now says Rapid Evolution: Search your deck for an Evolution named Gyarados or Dark Gyarados and put it on Clefable. (This counts as evolving Clefable.) Shuffle your deck afterward.
-
Clefairy Doll and Mysterious Fossil both have 10HP, but on Mysterious it says that if knocked out, discard. On C. Doll when it’s knocked out do I discard?
Knocking out specifically means to discard the card!
-
About the two rare Team Rocket Trainer: Is it forever or until the end of the turn(I believe the cards are “Here Comes Team Rocket” and “Rocket’s Sneak Attack”
Here come Team Rocket lasts for the game, Rocket’s Sneak attack only works the turn you play it.
-
What if there is no benched Pokémon on your opponent’s bench when you use Dark Magneton’s second attack?
It only moves the energy card IF he or she has a benched Pokémon, if they don’t the energy doesn’t move.
-
If you have four Drowzee (Team Rocket) on the bench can you use their Pokémon power “long-distance hypnosis” four times or just once?
4 times (once each).
-
If you use team rocket, flip over your prizes, can you use another one to flip em back over?
Nope.
-
Say if there is an Aerodactyl. If you use Magikarp(Team Rocket) and use rapid evolution could promo Eevee use it’s Pokémon power: chain reaction to evolve or not?
Yes.
-
Do you necessarily have to evolve Dark Alakazam from Dark Kadabra, or can it be evolved from a regular Kadabra?
Stage 2 dark Pokémon can only evolve form stage 1 dark Pokémon.
-
If Venomoth uses Shift, does it’s energy costs change with it’s type?
No it doesn’t.
-
Can I have say 4 Blain’s Arcanine and four regular Arcanine?
In one deck? Sure, they have different names.
-
Is there any other way besides F.Gastly’s “Energy Conversion” to get a DCE straight back into your hand (not into the deck)?
Hmmm, not that I know of. Does anyone else know of a way to do this, gang?
-
When my ditto uses an attack that requires discarding of a fire energy, may I discard an attached grass energy since all energy on ditto counts as any color?
Yes you can.
-
If Dark Wartortle were facing against Mr. Mime would mirror shell affect Mr. Mime when Dark Wartortle is KO?
It would depend on how much damage was done to Dark Wartortle, if it was 30 or more then the Invisible Wall would still prevent it (as long as Mr. Mime’s Pokémon Power still worked).
-
How many Mew’s should I put in my deck?
That my friend, is entirely up to you (4 max of course).
-
Does Defender prevent damage from poison?
Nope, it only reduces damage from Attacks, NOT attack effects like Poison.
-
If Clefairy is against Executor and she uses metronome. Do you go by the energy requirement on Executor? I was told by a friend that because it says ‘without regard to energy requirements’ that you just flipped untill the opponent was dead? That sounds wrong.
Right, your friend is wrong. You replace the word Exeggutor with the Clefairy when you use Metronome on the Big Eggsplosion attack. So you would flip as many coins as you have energy attached to the Clefairy.
-
May I move a double colorless energy attached to a ditto onto my Charmander, using Gather Fire?
Yes you could (since Energy attached to Ditto counts as any basic energy type).
-
If Golduck uses Hyper Beam to KO a Dark Gyarados and the coin flip was head and Gyarados had two energies on it, would the attack to 20 or 40 damage?
It would do 40.
-
Can you have 4 basic Charizard in your deck and 4 team Rocket Charizard?
Nope, they have the same name (Charizard); the set that they are from does not change their name. Now, Dark Charizard is a different name though, so you could have 4 of them and 4 Charizard.
-
To clarify the “all energy on Ditto counts as energy of any color”, this is only the case when Ditto is active and it’s Pokémon power comes into play, correct?
Correct.
-
Would Dk.Wartortle’s MirrorShell stop working if the opponent benches their Pokémon first (same as Smokescreen)?
Good question! It is worded a bit vague isn’t it? My guess is that it would end when the Defending Pokémon is benched but I will check on it.
-
What does Dark Raichu’s attack does?
Surprise Thunder: Flip a coin. If heads, flip another coin. If the second coin is heads, this attack does 20 to each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon. If the second coin flip is tails, this attack does 10 damage to each of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.) DAMAGE 30. It requires 3 lightning energy attached, btw.
-
What is a good ratio for total basic Pokémon to evolved Pokémon in a deck?
Well, we usually recommend 4 basic to 2 Stage 1 to 1 Stage 2 Pokémon normally. Of course, you can vary it.
-
Do you believe they should have a limit of 60 cards in a Pokémon deck? I mean, Magic you can have infinite cards, IT IS UNFAIR!
Why? It’s always been a part of the rules ever since the Pokémon TCG came out 5 years ago.
-
Ok, if I play a Computer Error, and I draw 5 cards, does my opponent HAVE to draw 5 cards too, or can he/she opt to draw a different number?
They can draw UP TO 5 cards so they get to choose the number.
-
A question on the damage caused from Rainbow Energy: If Mewtwo “energy absorbs” and then Venusaur "energy transfers it, do the receiving Pokémon take damage?
Nope, it only does the damage when you play the card from your hand.
-
Is Ancient Mew’s Pokémon Power the one where no evolved Pokémon can hurt it?
That’s going to be for League members to figure out.
-
Might want to check RD on the Golduck ruling. It seems you would carry out the attack and all its effects then knock out the Pokémon.
Ok, according to the order of attack: The last step is if the attack does anything else other than damage do that. Since Dark Gyarados is being Knocked out from the damage (step h) BEFORE the Remove Energy effect goes off the energy card should still be there when Dark Gyarados is Knocked out and his Pokémon Powers resolves.
-
Mew’s Devolution Beam works on the opponents benched Pokémon too, right?
Yea, that’s right.
-
If I evolve a Pokémon that is being effected by Smokescreen, does the effect go away?
Yes.
-
What’s the use of having 4 Charizard and 4 Dark Charizards in a deck when you can only have 4 Charmanders, which means you won’t use all of them? Isn’t it a waste of space?
Yes, it’s probably wasted space. But if your deck is focussed on getting a Charizard into play…maybe you want it that way?
-
When you use smoke screen does it affect all your opponents Pokémon because it says it makes the defending Pokémon flip a coin?
Nope. It just effects the defending Pokémon.
-
So your saying if my Gyarados was knocked out by a fossil Golduck, would it remove an energy card before Dark Gyarados used final beam?
You keep asking guys, we have to check with R&D. My understanding is that it would be knocked out BEFORE the remove energy card effect and so the Dark Gyarados would do 40 instead of 20.
-
Last week I asked about the Clefable Metronoming Rapid Evolution, and you said it could evolve, but Metronome says to copy the attack, and R. Evolution says put Gyarados on Magikarp, are you guys sure about this?
Yup, R&D confirmed it. You would replace the work Magikarp with the word Clefabel (as the ruling for Metronome is, always replace self-referencing with the Clefable/Clefairy). It would work (though only if you had a Gyarados in your deck of course.
-
Suppose I have a TR Rattata on my bench, no cards left in my deck, and one prize left. Can I use TR Rattata’s “Trickery” Pokémon Power to switch that Prize into my deck for the win?
Nope, sorry.
-
Does evolving a Pokémon remove smokescreen effect?
Yes it does.
-
What is the big deal with the order for the attacks, if you just do what the cards say, don’t you get it in the right order?
It can get confusing if there are relevant trainer cards; Pokémon powers and attack effects all being done in one attack. You have to know which ones resolve first.
-
I’m sure you knew this, but you apply all text from an attack before you decide final damage (and K-Oing the Pokémon) So first you would flip to see if an energy is discarded from Gyardos.
WRONG! You apply the damage FIRST and then, if the attack does anything other than damage, then you do that (which would be the Energy Card removal effect for Goldduck). Take a look at the rulebook.
-
Electabuzz does thunder punch with a plusepower and he flipped tails does it do 20 to Electabuzz?
Nope, pluspower only adds to damage done to the defending Pokémon.
-
Does Blastiose’s (Base Set) Hydro pump do 30+ or 40 +?
40+.
-
Do I have to have an actual fire energy card attached to Ditto to do an attack that requires discarding of fire energy? Or would a normal energy or rainbow energy work?
You could use any energy as all attached to Ditto (when he is active) can count as all-basic energy types.
-
Can you use Rocket Garbage run to recover an already discarded garbage run?
Do you mean Nightly Garbage Run? If so, then no, you can only bring back energy or Pokémon NOT Trainer cards.
-
If I have two Rainbow energy attached to a Dark Charizard, and I flip two heads, can I discard the rainbow energy or do I have to have fire energy cards?
You could discard the Rainbow Energy as they do count as all-basic energy types.
-
Is there any way other than F.Gastly’s “Energy Conversion” to put a DCE back into your hand (not into the deck).
Can’t think of any off of the top of my head, Pat?
-
I heard that the defending Pokémon has to be asleep for 2 turns in order to use base haunter’s dream eater… does the TR trainer Sleep! Change this?
The Defending Pokémon just has to be asleep when you try and use the Dream Eater attack. It doesn’t matter how you put it Asleep.
-
Can I use 4 Imposter Professor Oak cards in one turn?
Yes, you could if you had the 4 of them in your hand.
-
Can you Raindance Rainbow Energy?
No. Because it does not count as any type in your hand.
-
If dark Flareon use playing with fire, do I have to discard a fire energy even though I flipped a tail? Does the same rule apply on dark Charmeleon’s fireball attack?
For Dark Flareon you only discard a Fire Energy if you flip Heads. Same for Dark Charmeleon.
-
What are Dark Muks attacks?
Sludge Punch and the Pokémon Power Sticky Goo.
-
If I put defender on my active Pokémon, then I put a rainbow energy on the Pokémon, the defender prevent the damage right?
Nope. Defender only prevents damage from attacks only.
-
If I have a Ditto as my active Pokémon and my opponent retreats his active Pokémon does Ditto change into the new Pokémon?
Yes it does (as long as Ditto is not Asleep, Paralyzed, or confused).
-
Can you ever knock out Mr. Mime on the first hit without him being asleep, confused etc.?
If he does not already have damage on him? Nope.
-
I was just talking about the Mr. Mime thing; I remembered about Nidoking’s toxic whatever… it would do 20, then 20 again for the poisoning, right?
Yup! Very good, that would work.
-
Are the rules difference because of the gym leaders? I ask this question because the gym I play in only allow 1 trainer card per term!
Probably. There shouldn’t be any limits like that that I’ve heard of.
-
Ditto’s active with 20 damage, they put mysterious Ditto’s active with 20 damage, they put mysterious fossil as their Pokémon is Ditto KO?
I’m assuming you mean they retreat and bring up Mysterious Fossil. Ditto transforms into Mysterious Fossil, only has 10 HP but already has 20 damage so it goes to the discard pile. It does NOT count as a Knocked out Pokémon (last ruling by R&D) as it is a copy of Mysterious Fossil, which does not count as a Knocked out Pokémon.
-
What exactly does curse do?
POKÉMON POWER: Curse once during your turn (before your attack), you may move 1 damage counter from 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon to another (even if it would Knock Out the other Pokémon). This power can’t be used if Gengar is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed. It is a Pokémon Power on Gengar.
-
How much damage is done to each Pokémon if Rapidash uses Agility(Heads) followed by opponent Dk. Wartortle’s Mirror Shell followed by Rapidash’s Agility(Tails)? Is it 0, 30, or 60? Take your time and think about this one carefully please. THANKS.
We already have been thinking about this one and you will have to wait until we get an answer from R&D. My guess is that it would be 60 as Agility would NOT prevent Mirror Shell (it doesn’t refer to Rapidash). Then if Rapidash did 30 to Dark Wartortle the Mirror Shell would attack back for 30 (the word ATTACK is in the Mirror Shell description) and since Rapidash is weak to water it would be doubled to 60. However! That is my opinion and we will talk with R&D for the final official ruling.
-
What does the DCI plan to do about the combo of Imposter Oak’s Revenge, Rocket’s Sneak Attack, and Team Rocket’s Trap? Or can’t you discuss that?
No combo is unstoppable. I’m sure you clever Pokémon Masters out there can beat it.
-
If Muk stops a Snorlax’s Pokémon power and poisons it, and Snorlax defeats it with Body Slam, is it still poisoned? (The power stops if confused, paralyzed, or asleep. Not poison.)
Good question!!! Thick Skin states that Snorlax can’t BECOME asleep, confused, paralyzed, or poisoned. In this case he already is poisoned and I don’t think that the reactivation of the Thick Skin will remove the existing Poison.
-
Do you feel Wigglytuff, is too powerful of a Pokémon? With the ability to do 60 damage resistance to Psychic and only two retreat, it can be absolutely devastating?
Personally? Hmmm, he is fairly strong but not unstoppable.
-
Can you evolve a Dark Alakazam from a Kadabra?
Nope.
-
If Alakazam uses Damage Swap on a Pokémon with Defender, is the transferred damage prevented?
Nope, Defender only prevents damage from attacks, not from Pokémon Powers. Besides you do realize that you can’t use Damage Swap on the other player’s Pokémon, right?
-
What’s the difference between Dark Pokémon and regular ones?
Dark Pokémon are the Pokémon that have been raised by Team Rocket. Which means they are sneaky, conniving, and drink milk directly from the carton. They have different powers and attacks and usually have lower hp than the non-dark versions.
-
Can you attach double colorless energy then another energy since it is not a basic energy card?
Nope, you can only attach 1 energy card per turn (whether basic or not).
-
If I have 4 electric energy on an active Zapdos and another Zapdos on the bench with one energy, can I use thunderbolt and discard the energy off the benched Zapdos?
No, it means discard the energy off of the Zapdos that is doing the attack.
-
At recent tournament: Clefable Metronomed Dark Wartortle’s MIRROR SHELL. On opponents next turn, Dark Wartortle evolved into Dark Blastoise, and it was ruled that Clefable’s metronome of MIRROR SHELL would have no effect on players next turn. What are R&D’s current ruling on that?
I will have to check, it is unclear as to whom the attack SPECIFICALLY references. While it does mention the defending Pokémon it is only as a target of a possible future attack not as whom the effect specifically targets.
-
Will a Pokémon that is retreated and activated the turn after Dark Jolteon’s lightening flash still have to suffer the coin flip? I would say yes, and as a precedent: jungle Eevee’s tail wag says “benching either Pokémon cancels the effect” yet Dark J?
The Lightning Flash attacks effect references the Defending Pokémon. If that Pokémon is benched, evolved, or Devolved on the Defending player’s turn, then the effect is ended.
-
Okay, Ditto vs. D. Charizard. Ditto has a DCE and uses repeated fireball. It doesn’t have an Fire energy cards, so can it not use it or something?
Remember when Ditto is the active Pokémon, energy attached to Ditto can count as any basic energy type so he could use it.
-
Okay, Mew vs Venomoth or something, Mew uses Devolution Beam on Venomoth, can he evolve back into Venomoth next turn?
On the next turn? Sure.
-
You said no combo is unstoppable. However, with heads flipped, the IOR-RSA-TRT combo used first-turn leaves the opponent with one card (the draw) in their hand. This doesn’t leave much in the way of countering the combos. Why not just ban IOR?
Pokémon is supposed to be a game for fun, NOT hardcore competition (yeah I know we’ve been over this before). At this time (AND IT COULD CHANGE!) there are no plans on banning any cards. Besides 3 card combos don’t happen that often.
-
Can a rainbow energy be used as colorless, dark, and steal energy?
No, it can only be used as basic energy types.
-
Can you use goop gas attack when Dark Vileplume is in play?
Only if Dark Vileplume’s Pokémon power isn’t active.
-
When you use Pokémon Trader, do you shuffle a Pokémon card into your deck or do you discard one?
You shuffle it back into your deck.
-
Can promo Eevee’s Pokémon Power be used on the same turn that Eevee comes into play?
No, but you would be able to use it on the turn following that. In other words, if your opponent tries to evolve a Pokémon the turn after you brought Eevee into play, you could use Eevee’s power then.
