Hi so im thinking to start collecting base booster packs mainly 1st ed base. I dont have alot of expreience with sealed product but I feel 1st ed base booster packs especially in psa 10 will be next to really fly up in price but thats just my predition. Id anyone can give me an insight to the sealed product market and its future id find it a great help.
Pretty much the hardest and most expensive thing to get in the hobby.
You may wana try a different set to start off with, instead of going straight in at the deep end.
Best of luck though bud!
Graded packs are pretty niche and loose 1st ed base packs are subject to tampering. Sealed product is always the way to go, especially WOTC, but base set 1st ed sealed product is difficult to obtain confidently IMO.
Any other investment is only going to be predictable by people with several years of intimate engagement with collecting, collectors, and multiple hobby markets. If you do not intend to commit to gaining this knowledge, WOTC sealed product is not only the best investment but the only investment you could reasonably make.
I agree with @joetehman 's thoughts, PSA 10 grade on booster pack doesn’t really mean anything when buyer base has remained low all the time, can’t see them becoming “hot” thing basically ever.
You’ll do much better in long run by picking loose booster packs, blisters etc. if you can find any for good price.
Especially when the quality control with how the slab the packs is just horrid. When they can figure out how to make a proper case and have them look presentable, it will be a whole new ball game in my opinion.
I personally don’t mind the look, but I do understand how taking a flawless pack and bending back both ends of the foil can really turn a lot of collectors/buyers off to it. I have seen too many 9/10s that look horrible from bad folding or placement in the case vs 8’s that look better because of how well it was slabed. Either way I do agree they need update the slabs and just have the packs placed in flat (like how it should of been from the get go). if they do make that change I think you might see more hit the market and a few more on the fence buyers/collectors spend the premium to own a psa 9 or 10 of certain rarer wotc packs/arts.
The PSA cases are designed for Sport packs, specifically Wax packs, as that is majority of their business. As much as I would like a specific holder for Pokemon packs, it doesn’t make any sense for a company to ignore 90% of their business to accommodate maybe 2% of their business.
Has WOTC sealed product been a good investment? Absolutely.
Will it continue to be? It depends on what you have to pay for the product today. If you have to way overpay just to get one it’ll just take a while to break even, value wise. If you can get something at market then you should be safe and could turn a profit.
Curious - i’ve seen smpratte’s Instagram and know he has 1st Ed Base Set Booster Box(es)…do many of the tenured forum members here have one as well? It’s something completely out of reach for me given my life goal’s outside this hobby, but curious to know how many of those booster boxes are actually floating around still within this community, at least.
@skiwi I personally would like a better case for Pokemon Packs. I don’t want to be buzzkillington, but it makes no sense for a business when not only 90% of their volume is sport packs, but the low-average price per sports pack is probably higher than the highest priced Pokemon Pack. I am just being realistic, as PSA or any third party company is a business, and have to prioritize what keeps the lights on. I would love to see a new case, but don’t think it is realistic.
@jayce87 A few members have boxes. If the PSA 10 1st Ed charizard is out of reach, the boxes would in that echelon. They are non-existent at this point.
@jayce87 like Scott said, not only are they close to being non-existing but here in the forum we have had members tricked into buying counterfeit boxes. So unless the seller is mega reputable be very very careful. Do a quick search here in the forum so you can see some of the pics of these boxes.
