There is a ton of volatility and uncertainty with public sales for high-end cards right now. Just on the Charizard, if you look at the last sold through public channels in the 12 months, they have been as low as $163K and as high as $212K (which is a huge range).
Given how significant the $ amounts are for these cards now, a lot of people don’t want to list something and then have it sell for much lower than they were expecting. Unless you really need liquidity which can certainly happen too.
For that reason, it makes a lot of sense for some people to try and negotiate a private deal to have more certainty of sale price. Of course you also save fees as wade pointed out!
